Vedic Commentary in English :

Seer Patanjali had explained the five modifications in the coming aphorisms. Here this is to be understood that all the modifications are classified in five categories i.e. real cognition, unreal cognition, imagination, sleep and memory. All the modifications of mind are covered in these categories. So for the restrain of modifications, their categorisation is to be known.

The other way of classification of modifications is explained in the last aphorism, which is in terms of afflictive and non-afflictive. So either the modification will be afflictive or non-afflictive. Naming of the modifications is done in this aphorism. Afflictive and non-afflictive classification is to understand the causes of bondage and salvation and modification-residual potencies-modification cycle. With the afflictive modification-residual potencies-modification cycle person is involved in the experience of worldly objects and remains bonded in the life-cycle. On the other hand with non-afflictive modification-residual potencies-modification cycle person is able to achieve the discriminative knowledge and thereby oppose the authority and functioning of Qualities of Illumination, Activity and Inertia, and with the restrain of all the modifications Soul gets established in his conscious form and is able to achieve salvation.
