Preface to Sutra in English :

Meaning in English :

Sutra in English : viparyayo mithyaaj~naanam atadruupapratiShTham.8.

Meaning in English :

(viparyayaH) Unreal cognition is (mithyaa-GYaanam) false knowledge i.e. (atadruupa-pratiShTham) the knowledge which is not in the own form of object / subject.

Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss :

Second is unreal cognition where false knowledge takes place i.e. not knowing the objects / subjects as it is or having knowledge of other in other.

                                                (Rigvedaadi-bhaashyabhuumikaa - On Worship)

Vyaasa Commentary in English :

sa kasmaanna pramaaNama yataH pramaaNena baadhyate bhuutaarthaviShayatvaat pramaaNasya. tatra pramaaNena baadhanamapramaaNasya dRRiShTam. tadyathaa dvichandradarshana.m sadviShayeNaikachandradarshanena baadhyata iti.

Meaning In English :

(kasmaat) Why is (saH) it (na) not (pramaaNam) knowledge of real? (yataH) Because (baadhyate) it is removed (pramaaNena) by real knowledge of the subject / object, since (pramaaNasya) the real cognition has (bhuutaartha-viShayatvaat) for its object / subject, a thing, as it exists. (tatra) So in that object / subject (baadhanam) the removal of (apramaaNasya) false knowledge is (driShTam) seen (pramaaNena) by the help of true knowledge; (tad-yathaa) for example (dvi-chandra-darshanam) the visual knowledge of two moons is (baadhyate iti) removed by (sad-viShayeNa) the perception of the object as it really exits, i.e. (eka-chandra-darshanena) by viewing the one moon.

(sa iyam) This, the unreal cognition, is (avidyaa) called Nescience, and (pa~ncha-parvaa bhavati) is five-fold. These five-folds are known as (avidyaa-asmitaa-raaga-dveSha-abhiniveshaaH) Nescience, Egoism, Attachment, Aversion and Fear of Death, are (kleshaaH iti) the five afflictions. (ete eva) These five afflictions (sva-sanGYaabhiH) are technically, by its nature, are called as (tamo-moho-mahaamohaH-taamisrondhataamisra iti) darkness, stupefied, extremely stupefied, excessive darkness and blind darkness.

(ete) These afflictions (abhidhaasyante) will be described (chitta-mala-prasa~Ngena) in the context of impurities of the mind.

Vedic Commentary in English :

Seer Patanjali said that the knowledge which is not according the form of the object / subject is false knowledge, is called as unreal cognition = perversion. This type of knowledge is removed by the real cognition of the subject / object. For example on account of some defect in the eyes, if one sees two moons, this false knowledge cease to exist when he actually sees one moon on removal of defect in the eyes. Seer Kanaada had given two reasons for the perversion = nescience —

            indriya-doShaat sa.nskaara-doShaat cha avidyaa. (VaisheShika 9.2.10)

Nescience takes place on account of defects of senses and defects of residual potencies. Defects in sense organs take place on account of physical imbalances, which result in lower or defective grasping power of senses. With the weak sense powers one is not able to grasp the real visible form of the object, and thereby a modification of false, opposite or defective knowledge of the object is manifested in the mind. With the false knowledge and experience the residual potencies of same nature are generated which is termed as afflictive residual potency. This is called defects of residual potencies. These two are the causes of generation of false knowledge.

In case of real cognition the real form of the object is cognized, whereas in case of perversion the knowledge generated is not according to the form of the object. So both the modifications are different on account of cognition.

This unreal cognition = perversion is also called as nescience which is of five types - namely nescience, egoism, attachment, aversion and fear of death. These are called as afflictions and are explained in the second chapter from aphorism 2.5 to 2.9. The other names of these five afflictions are darkness, stupefied, extremely stupefied, excessive darkness and blind darkness, i.e. Nescience is darkness; Egoism is stupefied; Attachment is extremely stupefied; Aversion is excessive darkness and Fear of Death is blind darkness. These five are further classified in 62 categories which are explained in Sankhyakaarika.

Perversion modification, being nescience, is afflictive only. All other modifications also become afflictive when they are affected by Nescience. It is to be understood that nescience is the root cause of all the pains. Seer Gautam clearly declares —

            duHkha-janma-pravritti-doSha-mithyaaGYaanaanaam uttarottraapaaye tadanantra-apaayaat apavargaH. (Nyaaya 1.1.2)

i.e. cause of pain is birth, cause of birth is activity, cause of activity is defects, cause of defects is false knowledge = nescience. With the removal of nescience defects are removed, on removal of defects - activity towards vice and virtue ceases, on cessation of activity life-cycle ends and with the end of life-cycle pain cease to exist for the Soul. This is the state of salvation. So on account of afflictive modification - residual potencies - modifications generated from nescience = unreal cognition, Soul is wandering in the vicious cycle of defects - activity - life - pains since eternity. This is termed as movement of modification - residual potency - modification cycle by seer Vyaasa in aphorism 1.5. In this way the perversion modification, by strengthening the acts and residual potencies and keeping the Soul moving in the life-cycle and making him experience pains, is called affliction only.

However the devotee has to restrain all the modifications for performance of Yoga, but without restraining this unreal cognition one cannot move a step even on the path of Yoga. If a person is involved in and affected by the false knowledge, then not to talk of cognizance of Soul and GOD, he will be effected by the defects in the social life and behaviour and thereby suffering pains. The main fruit of Yoga is salvation which cannot be achieved without obtaining discriminative knowledge of the three eternal objects i.e. Matter, Soul and GOD and cessation of authority of Qualities. So seer Patanjali and seer Vyaasa had stressed for restrain of this perversion modification (= unreal cognition) on various places in this scripture.
