Component Word : sarvaarthataikaagratayoH kShayodayau chittasya samaadhipariNaamaH.
Sutra in English : sarvaarthataikaagratayoH kShayodayau chittasya samaadhipariNaamaH.11.
Meaning in English : (samaadhi-pariNaamaH) The trance modification state (chittasya) of the mind is (kShaya-udayau) the destruction and rise of (sarvaarthataa-ekaagratayoH) all-pointedness and one-pointedness.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : sarvaarthataa chittadharmaH. ekaagrataa.api chittadharmaH. sarvaarthataayaaH kShayastirobhaava ityarthaH. ekaagrataayaa udaya aavirbhaava ityarthaH. tayordharmitvenaanugata.m chittam. tadida.m chittamapaayopajanayoH1 svaatmabhuutayordharmayoranugata.m samaadhiiyate sa chittasya samaadhipariNaamaH.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (sarvaarthataa) All-pointedness = moving to all objects is (chitta-dharmaH) the characteristic of the mind; and (ekaagrataa) one-pointedness = moving to one object (api) is also (chitta-dharmaH) a characteristic of the mind. (kShayaH) Destruction (sarvaarthataayaaH) of all-pointedness (arthaH) means (tirobhaavaH iti) its disappearance. (udayaH) Rise (ekaagrataayaa) of one-pointedness (arthaH) means (aavirbhaavaH iti) its appearance. (chittam) Mind (anugatam) follows (tayoH) both these states (dharmitvena) as an independent object. (tat idam chittam) This mind then (anugatam) following (apaayo-apajanayoH) both these characteristics of the destruction of all-pointedness and the manifestation of one-pointedness (svaatmabhuutayoH dharmayoH) along with the characteristics of its nature (samaadhiiyate) inclines towards contemplation. (saH) This is (samaadhi-pariNaamaH) the trance modification (chittasya) of the mind.
Vedic Commentary in English : To have an undisturbed calm state of mind, the yogi has to practice for restrained modification state of mind. Restrained modification state of mind is the last state and after that no other modification takes place. But in order to achieve this state of mind, the yogi has to start from the trance modification state of mind.
Trance is a universal characteristic of mind, i.e., it can take place in all the planes of mind = i.e., in wandering, stupefied, occasionally steady, one-pointed, and restrained states of mind (Ref - "sa cha saarvabhaumaH-chittasya dharmaH" (Vyaasa commentary on 1.1)). What is the trance modification of the mind? In this regard, Seer Patanjali said that the cessation of all-pointedness and the manifestation of one-pointedness is the trance modification of the mind.
The mind is of three-fold Qualities. Nature of mind is also changeable, just like the Qualities; so, it is able to move toward various objects = subjects and grasp them, and in this way, it keeps on grasping various objects one after another. This is an all-pointedness characteristic of the mind. There is one other characteristic of the mind — one-pointedness, in which it does not move towards various objects, but moves toward the same object again and again. In this way, by moving toward the same object = subject, one-pointedness is manifested in the mind and it is known as a one-pointed modification of the mind. When the devotee over-powers the all-pointedness characteristic of the mind and manifests the one-pointedness characteristic, then he achieves the trance modification of the mind.
It is to be understood here that trance modification of mind is possible in all the planes of mind; but all such trance modifications do not fall in the category of Yoga (Trance modification of all planes is explained in our gloss to aphorism 1.1, please refer there only). Trance modifications, in the one-pointed and restrained states of mind, fall under the category of Yoga. So, when there is a dominance of Quality of Energy = Activity (wandering state) in the mind, or dominance of Quality of Inertia (stupefied state), or existence of Quality of Energy along with the Quality of Illumination causing the distraction in the mind (distracted = occasionally steady state), then in such planes of mind, even there is the destruction of all-pointedness, the devotee is not able to enter in the empire of Yoga. When in the mind, which is dominated by Quality of Illumination (one-pointed state), all-pointedness is disappeared and one-pointedness is manifested, then the devotee enters the endless regime of Yoga, and trance modification of this state of mind is desired for the devotee.
Suppression modification is related to the potencies, where Yogi over-powers the worldly potencies and creates the suppression potencies; on the other hand, all-pointedness and one-pointedness are related to the modifications of the mind. Here the yogi restrain the modification of Qualities of Inertia and Quality of Energy = Activity and mixed-up of two, or modifications of a distracted state of mind i.e., the mind controlled by the Quality of Illumination along with the Quality of Energy; and destroy the modifications of all-pointedness towards the various objects, of the mind which is dominated by Quality of Illumination and manifest the modification related to one object, and with the result is able to create the trance modification of the mind.
