Ancient Seer Commentary in English : kuupaadadha urasi kuurmaakaaraa naaDii, tasyaa.m kRRitasa.myamaH sthirapada.m labhate, yathaa sarpo godhaa veti.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (adhaH) Below (kuupaat) is the pit of the throat, (urasi) in the chest, (kuurmaa-kaaraa naaDii) is a nerve in the shape of a tortoise. (krita-sa.nyamaH) By performing Sanyama (tasyaam) over that nerve, the yogi (labhate) gets (sthirapadam) firmness of position of his body (yathaa) as (sarpaH godhaa vaa iti) that of snake and alligator.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism attainment of performing Sanyama over the tortoise, a nerve is explained. Below the pit of the throat, in the chest, there is a nerve in the shape of a tortoise, and the same is known as a tortoise nerve. When the devotee performs Sanyama over this nerve, he gets steadiness which is physical as well as mental. Sanyama being the mental process, the steadiness of the mind is achieved in a natural way, but Seer Vyaasa said that the devotee gets the physical steadiness, by giving two examples of snake and alligator.
The firmness of the snake is seen when he enters the hole (= snake hole), at the time it is not possible to pull him out by pulling its tail. In the same alligator is used at the time of war to climb on the walls of fort etc. A rope is fixed at the feet of the alligator and is thrown on the hope edge of the wall, and soldiers climb on that wall with the help of the rope. Both these are symbols of physical steadiness. So, the devotee gets physical steadiness along with mental steadiness by performing Sanyama over the tortoise nerve.
