Component Word : hRRidaye chittasa.mvit.
Sutra in English : hRRidaye chittasa.mvit.34.
Meaning in English : (hridaye) By performing Sanyama in the heart, the yogi (chitta-samvit) gets the knowledge of the mind.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : yadidamasminbrahmapure dahara.m puNDariika.m veshma tatra vij~naana.m tasminsa.myamaachchittasa.mvit.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (daharam) The subtle (veshma) place (yat idam) which is (puNDariikam) of the shape of a lotus, (asmin brahmapure) this Brahmapuri = heart, and (tatra) there is (vij~naanam) the place of mind which is the source of intelligence = systematic knowledge. (sa.nyamaat) By performing Sanyama (tasmin) in the heart, the yogi gets (chitta-samvit) the knowledge of the mind.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism, Seer Patanjali had advised the fruit of performing Sanyama in the heart. By performing Sanyama in the heart, the Yogi gets the knowledge of the mind. Seer Vyaasa had said - "brahmapure daharam puNDariikam veshma tatra viGYaanam" - this statement has similarity to Chhandogya-upaniShada 8.1.1 which is as follows —
atha yad-idam-asmin brahmpure daharam puNDariikam veshama daharo.sminnan-taraakaashaH-tasmin yadantastad-nveShTavyam tadvaava vijiGYaasitavyam-iti.
i.e., below the throat, between the two udders = breast and above the stomach, is the place of heart, and is known as the city of GOD; there is an abode and in that, there is a space in the shape of a lotus flower; and that space is pervaded by the GOD, and GOD is cognized at that place by proper searching (during the trance). There is no other space that is better than this, for the cognizance of GOD. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumika, on worship).
Seer Vyaasa further said that the above-said place is the place of intelligence, and it is meant for the mind which is the source of all types of systematic knowledge. (Ref - chittam viGYaanam (Yajurveda 20.9) - i.e., the mind is the means for proper knowledge and various knowledge (Swami Dayanand Saraswati)). This mind is a part of the subtle body for the Soul, in which the Soul exists. This city of GOD is also the place of the Soul. In this regard, there is a testimony of Vedanta philosophy where Seer Vyaasa said —
itaraparaamarshaatsa iti chet-na-asambhavaat. (Vedanta Philosophy 1.3.18)
There was a query as that why the 'daharam' = subtle place should not be treated as a place of Soul only who is worth knowing. On this Seer Vyaasa said that this meaning will not be proper that the qualities of worship-able etc. do not exist in the Soul, these qualities are possible in GOD only. So, this subtle place is pervaded by GOD and HE alone is knowable there.
So, from the above, it is clear that seers have accepted this place as a place of GOD as well as the Soul also. And in the life-cycle of this world, the Soul is covered by the subtle body. So, the mind, which is the part of the subtle body, also exists in the heart. This meaning had been clarified by Seer Vyaasa by the words 'tatra viGYaanam' = source of knowledge. In this regard, there is a testimony of Vedas as —
hritpratiShTham yadajiram javiShTham tanme manaH shivasa.nkalpamastu. (Yajurveda 34.6)
The mind, which exists in the heart, and is highly moving, motivates various subjects, should be well-doer, and work as per virtue only. (Swami Dayanand Saraswati). The other testimonies in this regard are —
mano hridaye (shritam). (Taitriiya-bhraahmaNa 3.10.8.6)
i.e., the mind exists in the heart.
kasminnu manaH pratiShThitam bhavati-iti hridayam iti. (Shatapatha 14.6.9.25)
i.e., where does the mind exist? It exists in the heart.
Hence yogi get the knowledge of the mind by performing Sanyama in the heart. He knows what is the form of mind?, what are its modifications? what type of potencies are there? etc.
Some of the commentators said that yogi also knows the minds of others such Sanyama. This conception is based on the commentary of Bhoja. But this conception is against the principles. When a yogi performs Sanyama in his heart, he will get the knowledge of his mind, not the mind of others. As we have already explained in aphorism 3.1-3, the external objects cannot form the base of Sanyama for the yogi. Since the hearts of other persons are external objects, a yogi cannot perform Sanyama on those hearts. Further attainment of knowledge of the mind of other persons is already explained in aphorism 3.19, so, this repetition is not desirable. Hence such a conception is against the principles.
Some of the commentators have said that the heart exists in the head, not in the chest. But from the testimony of chhandogya-upaniShada it is very clear that the heart exists in the chest, not in the head. Further Seer Vyaasa had clearly said in aphorism 3.39 - "praaNo mukha-naasikaa-gatiraahridayavrittiH" which means the breath system moves through the mouth and manifests up to the heart. And in practical life breath moves from the mouth/nose towards the chest, not towards the head, so, the heart exists in the chest only.
