Ancient seer Meaning in English : (tulyayoH desha-lakShaNa-saaruupye) When the position and secondary qualities of two objects are the same, (jaatibhedaH) the genus (hetuH) causes (anyataayaa) distinction between the two, as (iyam) "this is (gauH) cow", and (iyam) "this is (vadavaa iti) mare". (tulya-desha-jaatiiyatve) When the position and genus are the same, (lakShaNam) the secondary quality (anyatvakaram) is the cause of distinction between the two, as (kaalaakShii gauH) "cow with the black eyes" and (svastimatii gauH iti) "cow with the sign of svasti". (dvayoH aamalakayoH) Between the two emblic fruits (jaati-lakShaNa-saaruupyaat) in which the genus and secondary qualities are the same, (desha-bhedaH) difference of position is (anyatvakaraH) cause of distinction between the two, as (idam) this is (puurvam) anterior and (idam) this is (uttaram iti) posterior.
(yadaa) When, (tu) however, (puurvam aamalakam) anterior emblic fruit (upaavartyate) placed at the position of (uttaradeshe) the posterior one, (anyavya-grasya j~naatuH) at a time when the knower was involved in another object = subject, (tadaa) then (tulya-deshatve) the position of both the emblic fruits becoming same, the knower (pravibhaaga-anupapattiH) will not be able to make a distinction that (etat puurvam) this emblic fruit was originally placed anterior and (etat uttaram iti) this emblic fruit was posterior. (cha) And, on the other hand, (tattva-j~naanena) the knowledge of the truth (bhavitavyam) should be (asandigdhena iti) without doubts. (ataH) Therefore (idam uktam) it has been said that (tataH prati-pattiH) this type of knowledge is achieved (vivekaja-j~naanaat iti) by knowledge 'born-of-discrimination'.
(katham) How is the knowledge 'born of discrimination' the cause of distinction? (puurva-aamalaka-saha-kShaNaH deshaH) The space correlated to the moments of time of the anterior emblic fruit (bhinnaH) is different (uttara-aamalaka-saha-kShaNaH deshaat) from the space correlated to the moments of time for the posterior emblic fruit; (cha) and (te aamalake) both emblic fruits are (svadesha-kShaNa-anubhava-bhinne) separate on account of the experience of moments of time-correlated to their distinct position in the space. (anyadesha-kShaNa-anubhavaH tu) The experience of moments of ‘time-correlated’ to other space is (hetuH) cause (anyatve) of distinction (tayoH iti) between the two.
(etena driShTaantena) By this example, in the case of (paramaaNoH) atoms (tulya-jaati-lakShaNa-deshasya) which have a community of genus, secondary quality, and position in space, the same is to be understood. (puurva-paramaaNu-desha-saha-kShaNa-saakShaat-karaNaat) By direct cognition of moments correlated to position in space of anterior atom, and for (uttarasya paramaaNoH) the atom of posterior position in space, (tad-desha-anupapattau) that position of an anterior atom is not available, so, (tad-desha-anubhavaH) the experience of moments correlated to the position in space (uttarasya) of posterior atom (bhinnaH) is different. (iishvarasya yoginaH) The yogi with knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' (bhavati) knows (anyatva-pratyayaH) the distinction (tayoH) between the two atoms (saha-kShaNa-bhedaat iti) on account of the difference of moments correlated to their position in space.
(apare tu varNayanti) The other intellects, however, say that (ye antyaaH visheShaaH) it is last specific peculiarities in the object like an atom, etc. (te) that (kurvanti) causes (anyataa-pratyayam iti) notion of distinction. (tatra api) Even there also (desha-lakShaNa-bhedaH) the difference of position, secondary qualities (cha) and (muurti-vyavadhi-jaati-bhedaH) difference of form, intervening space and genus are (hetuH) causes (anyatve) of distinction. On the other hand (kShaNa-bhedaH tu) subtlest difference of moments, however, (yogi-buddhi-gamya eva iti) is cognized by the mind of Yogi only. (ataH) Therefore, (vaarShagaNyaH) Saint VaarShaganya (uktam) had said that (muurti-vyavadhi-jaati-bheda-abhaavaat) On account of absence of difference of form, intervening space and genus (na asti) there is no (muula-prithaktvam iti) separation in root cause (= nature) of this world.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the last aphorism, Sanyama over a moment and its succession were advised for knowledge 'born-of-discrimination'. The specific property of this knowledge is explained in this aphorism. Seer Patanjali said that the two similar objects are distinguished by the knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' where the distinction is not possible on account of the genus, characteristics, and position-in-space. Objects are normally distinguished on account of their genus, characteristics, and position-in-space. This is to be understood as follows —
1. Genus:- Genus is one of the prime means to distinguish two objects. When two objects with the same characteristics are present in one place, then their genus is the means for distinction. If two white animals are standing in one place, then their genus makes the difference; i.e., "This is a cow" or "This is a mare". This distinction is made on the basis of the genus of two animals.
2. Characteristic:- If the genus and place of two objects are the same then the distinction between the two is done on account of their characteristics. If two cows are standing in one place, then their distinction is done on account of their characteristics, i.e., "cow with the black eyes" or "cow with the sign of svasti".
3. Space:- If two objects of the same genus and the same characteristics are placed in one place, then the distinction between the two is made on account of their position in space. For example, if two emblic fruits of the same size are placed at a particular place, then the distinction between the two is done with regard to their position i.e., "this emblic fruit is anterior" and "this emblic fruit is posterior".
In the above examples distinction between genus and characteristics is clear, but space distinction does not make any difference for genus and characteristics of the objects. It means that if the anterior emblic fruit is placed at the position of the posterior emblic fruit or both are put together, then one cannot make any difference between the two i.e., which was in the anterior position and which was in the posterior position?
But Seer Vyaasa said that knowledge of truth is without any doubt. So, the distinction between the two is made by knowledge 'born-of-discrimination'. This distinction is known by the cognizance of the moment and its succession. For the emblic fruit which existed in an anterior position, the space correlated to the moments of time of that emblic fruit was different from the space correlated to the moments of time of posterior emblic fruit; and both the emblic fruits are different on account of the experience of moments of time-correlated to their respective space. It means that the first emblic fruit which existed at a space correlated to the moments of time, and the second emblic fruit did not exist at that space correlated with the same moments of time, but existed at some other place. So, both emblic fruits have a relation of different places correlated with moments of time. This different experience of places, correlated with moments, becomes the cause of distinction between the two emblic fruits.
In this way, distinction on account of the moment and its succession is possible, by the power of cognizance, to the yogi. By the same example, Seer Vyaasa said that the distinction of subtle atoms, which have the same genus, characteristics, and space, can be done by the yogi with knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' i.e., by cognizance of the moment and its succession related to the respective atoms.
For the distinction between two objects, the difference on account of genus and characteristics exists in the form of the object only, on the other hand, the difference of space does not exist in their form, but is related to the space where the objects exist. Seer Vyaasa had prescribed a procedure for space difference, and on the basis of which — the “Relativity Theory of Time and Space” had been established by modern scientists. In fact, every object is related to time and space at every moment. Time and Space are said as eternal objects in the various scriptures. So, the objects always remain connected with the eternal omnipresent space and time.
By the power of Sanyama over the moment and its succession, the yogi knows that the particular object was related to which place at the particular time; and this is called knowledge 'born-of-discrimination'. Seer Patanjali had declared this knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' as "sarvthaaviShayam" i.e., has all conditions for its sphere of operation on which Seer Vyaasa wrote - "Has every condition for its sphere of operation means that yogi knows all the past and futuristic states and conditions of all the objects in sequence and all respects". So, the yogi is capable of distinguishing the object by cognizing the space-related = correlated with the moments, by performing Sanyama over the moment and its succession.
As per some intellectuals, the last specific properties in the object cause the distinction of atoms. But in this conception also the difference of position, secondary qualities, form, intervening space, and genus is accepted as a cause of distinction; and this conception is accepted by the common man. On the other hand, the subtlest cause of distinction, which is the distinction of moments, is known only and only by the mind of the yogi. So, the yogi, with the knowledge 'born-of-discrimination', is not only able to know the distinction between gross objects, but also the subtlest atoms, since the distinction of atoms of Matter cannot be distinguished on the basis of their genus, secondary quality, and space.
Comment in English : The proofs of eternity of time and space can be summarised as below :-
1. Seer Gautama had declared time and space as eternal in aphorism 4.1.28 of Nyaaya Philosophy;
2. While replying to a question in chapter 12 of Light of Truth, Swami Dayanand said - "the space, time, souls and atom cannot become new or old, since these are eternal and non-destroyable as a cause";
3. On account of counting of time for creation and holocaust in the scriptures, time is proved as eternal. In the same way in hymn 31.4 of Yajurveda it said that whole universe exists in one part of GOD, and not available in other three parts, space is proved as eternal;
4. Seer Kanaada had accepted time and space as eternal. For eternity of space, refer aphorism 2.1.27-29; and for time, refer aphorism 2.2.6-9 of VaisheShika Philisophy.)

Relativity Theory of Time and Space
हिंदी में टिप्पणी : — (अ) न्याय ४.१.२८ की व्याख्या में महर्षि वात्स्यायन ने काल और आकाश को नित्य कहा है;
— (आ) महर्षि दयानन्द सत्यार्थ प्रकाश के १२ वें समुल्लास में जैनियों का खण्डन करते हुए कहते हैं — “क्योंकि आकाश काल जीव और परमाणु, ये नए वा पुराने कभी नहीं हो सकते। क्योंकि ये अनादि और कारण रूप से अविनाशी हैं”;
— (इ) शास्त्रों में सृष्टि काल और प्रलय काल की गणना उपलब्ध होने से, काल की नित्यता प्रमाणित होती है। इसी प्रकार यजु॰ ३१.४ में ब्रह्माण्ड के, परमात्मा के एक देश में ही प्रतिपादन होने से और शेष देश में न होने से देश की नित्यता प्रमाणित होती है;
