Sutra in English : sattvapuruShayoH shuddhisaamye kaivalyamiti.55.
Meaning in English : (kaivalyam iti) Absolute independence = salvation is achieved when (shuddhi) the purity (sattva-puruShayoH) of mind and Soul (saamye) becomes equal.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : Salvation is achieved by the purity of both i.e., Sattva = mind and Purusha = Soul, not otherwise. (Rigvedaadibhashyabhuumika - on Emancipation)

Ancient seer Meaning in English : (yadaa) When (buddhi-sattvam) the mind with Illumination Quality, (nirdhuuta-rajas-tamomalam) in which the impurities of Qualities of Activity and Inertia are removed, (puruShasya anyataa-pratiitimaatra-adhikaaram) has the notion of distinctness of Soul only, and (dagdha-klesha-biijam bhavati) all seeds of afflictions have been burnt-up, (tadaa) then the mind (aapannam bhavati) achieves the (suddhi-saaruupyam) state of purity similar to that of (puruShasya iva) Soul only. (tadaa) At that time (upacharita-bhoga-abhaavaH) absence of enjoyment attributable to the Soul is (suddhiH) purity (puruShasya) of the Soul.
(etasyaam avasthaayaam) In this state whether yogi (iishvarasya) has obtained various powers of yoga (vaa) or (aniishvarasya) has not obtained them; and (vivekaja-j~naana-bhaaginaH) he possesses the knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' (vaa) or (itarasya) does not possess the same, he (kaivalyam bhavati) achieves salvation = absolute independence. (hi) Since the yogi, (dagdha-klesha-biijasya) whose seeds of afflictions are burnt-up, (na asti) does not (apekShaa) need (kaachit) any (j~naane) knowledge (punaH) again.
(sattva-suddhi-dvaareNa) By the purity of mind (etat) this (samaadhijam aishvaryam) power born of trance (cha) and (j~naanam) knowledge (upakraantam) has been touched upon. (paramaarthataH) In reality, (tu) however, (adarshanam) Nescience (nivarttate) is removed (j~naanaat) by knowledge. (nivritte) On removal (tasmin) of nescience, (uttare kleshaaH) the other afflictions following the nescience i.e., Egoism, etc. (na santi) do not born = come into existence. (klesha-abhaavaat) In the absence of afflictions (karma-vipaaka-abhaavaH) there is no fruition of actions. (cha) And (etasyaam avasthaayaam) in this state = i.e., in the state where afflictions do not exist, (guNaaH) the Qualities, (charita-adhikaaraaH) which have fulfilled their objects and having nothing to perform, (na upatiShThante) do not present themselves (punaH) again (drishyatvena) as knowable = as means of enjoyment (puruShasya) for the Soul. (tat) That is (kaivalyam) salvation (puruShasya) of the Soul. (tadaa) Then (puruShaH) the Soul (svaruupa-maatra-jyotiH) existing in his own conscious form alone, and (amalaH) pure = is without the impurities of Qualities, so, (bhavati) becomes (kevalii) absolutely free.
Vedic Commentary in English : While advising the state for the achievement of salvation, Seer Patanjali said that when the mind and Soul become equally pure, then the Soul achieves salvation. Salvation cannot be achieved at any stage before this.
What is the purity of mind? While explaining the purity of mind, Seer Vyaasa said that when the mind with the Illumination Quality, in which the impurities of Qualities of Activity and Inertia do not remain, reaches the highest state of Egoistic Cognitive Trance, after achieving various stages of Cognitive Trance, then at this stage the mind is having the distinctive knowledge of Soul and mind, and after this when the afflictions of the mind are burnt-up, then such mind is known as pure. In fact, this purity of mind is its highest purity, but this purity is inferior to the purity of the Soul. In this state the afflictions of the mind are in the burnt-up state, so, the mind exists as pure just like that of the Soul and it has only one function remaining i.e., becoming latent in its material cause = Matter.
What is the purity of the Soul? The Soul is said as pure in his form (Ref Vyaasa commentary on aphorism 1.2 - "chitishaktiH-apariNaamini-apratisa.nkramaa darshitaviShayaa shuddhaa cha anantaa cha"). In such a state what is the meaning of achieving the purity of the Soul? In a state other than that of Ultra-cognitive Trance, i.e., in a state of Cognitive Trance and worldly affairs, the Soul experiences the worldly enjoyments as provided to him by the mind, i.e., he appears in the form of modifications of the mind (Ref - "vritti-saaruupyam itaratra" Yoga 1.4). Experiencing the enjoyments = objects = subjects provided by the mind, i.e., appearing in the form of modifications of the mind is the impurity of the Soul. When the mind becomes pure as above, the enjoyments are not available for the Soul, hence the absence of enjoyments attributable to the Soul is the purity of the Soul.
In this state, when both the mind and Soul become pure as above, whether the yogi had achieved various attainments described in this chapter or not, or possesses the knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' = attained the knowledge of all objects (as explained in aphorism 3.52-54 above) therefrom or not, he will achieve salvation. The reason for this is that yogi does not require any knowledge after burning up the seeds of afflictions. So, whether the yogi has achieved the attainments or not, having complete knowledge of all the products of Matter or not, there is no hindrance in achieving salvation. It has to be kept in mind that discriminative knowledge of Matter and Soul is not prohibited, but the same is required to be obtained; here only the knowledge of products of Matter, without sequence is not expected.
By purity of mind as above i.e., when the mind becomes pure similar to that of the Soul = having achieved the discriminative knowledge of mind and Soul, the yogi automatically receives power born of trance (as explained in aphorism 3.49 above) and knowledge. Seer Vyaasa said that in reality Nescience is removed by knowledge. On removal of Nescience, other afflictions of egoism, etc. which take place on its existence, do not born (Ref - "avidyaa kShetram utreShaam" Yoga 2.4). In this way by the absence of afflictions of Nescience etc., there is no fruition of actions (Ref - "satimuule tadvipaako jaati-aayuH-bhogaaH" yoga 2.13). And in this way, the Qualities which exist in the mind, having fulfilled their object and have nothing to perform i.e., having made available salvation for the Soul, do not provide material enjoyment to the Soul again. In this state, the yogi has only one purpose remaining which is making the mind latent in the Matter.
After this state only, the yogi achieves salvation. In this state, the Soul exists in his own conscious form only, is without the impurities of Qualities, and becomes absolutely free.
