Ancient seer Meaning in English : (manaH hi) Mind is (uparaktam) colored (mantavyena arthena) by the knowable external object. (cha) And (tat) that mind being (svayam) itself (viShayatvaat) an object (abhisambaddham) becomes related (viShayiNaa puruSheNa) with the subjective Soul (aatmiiyayaa vrittyaa) through its modifications. (tat etat) In this way that (chittam) mind (eva) alone (draShTri-drishya-uparaktam) is colored by the knower and knowable i.e., (viShaya-viShayi-nirbhaasam) appears like the Soul and external object, and (chetana-achetana-svaruupaa-pannam) assumes the nature of consciousness i.e., the Soul and unconscious i.e., the respective external object by which it is colored. (api) Although (viShayaatmakam) it is of the very nature of the object, (aviShayaatmakam iva) appears as non-object = not-knowable like the conscious object, and (achetanam) even being an inanimate object (being the product of the Qualities) (chetanam iva) appears as a conscious object. So, (uchyate) it is said that the mind (sphatika-maNi-kalpam) being of the nature of crystal (sarvaartham iti) is termed as Omni-objective.
(tat) Therefore (bhraantaaH) being deceived = misled (anena chitta-saaruupyeNa) by this similarity of mental appearance towards knower and knowable (kechit) some people (aahuH) call (tadeva) this mind (chetanam iti) as a conscious object.
(apare) Others say that (idam sarvam) all these objects are (chitta-maatram eva) but the mind only, and (na asti khalu) there is no existence (ayam) of this (lokaH) objective world (gavaadiH) in the form of a cow, etc. as animate objects (cha) and (ghataadiH) in the form of Jar, etc. as inanimate objects (sakaaraNaH) which are governed by the law of causation, (iti) therefore nothing exists other than mind only. (te) They all are (anu-kampaniiyaaH) to be pitied. (kasmaat) For what reason? (hi) Since (chittam iti) the mind (sarva-ruupaakaara-nirbhaasam) which appears in the form of the Soul, as well as all external objects, (asti) is (bhraanti-biijam) the cause of confusion (teShaam) for them.
The mean for removing this confusion is explained as — (samaadhi- praj~naayaam) in the trance-cognition, (praj~neyaH arthaH) the cognizable object (prati-bimbiibhuutaH) is reflected in the mind, that object (anyaH) is different from the mind (tasya aalambanii-bhuuta-tvaat) since it became the base for the trance in the mind. (chet) If (saH arthaH) that object (chitta-maatram syaat) was the mind alone, then (katham) how (avadhaaryeta) to decide the (praj~naa-ruupam) the nature of the cognition = the mind (praj~naa eva) by the cognition = the mind alone, in the trance. (tasmaat) Therefore (praj~naayaam) in the trance-cognition, (saH) he (yena) who (avadhaaryate) cognizes (prati-bimbiibhuutaH arthaH) the reflected object in the mind (puruShaH iti) is the Soul only.
(evam) In this way, those who (pravibhajyante) distinctly divide, (etat) these (trayam) three objects (grahiitri-grahaNa-graahya-svaruupa-chitta-bhedaat api) i.e., grahiitaa = knower, grahaNa = mind, and graahya = external object which make different modification even (jaatitaH) by nature (te) they are (samyag-darshinaH) the real cognisors. (taiH) By those intellects, cognition (puruShaH) of the Soul (adhigataH iti) is achieved.
Vedic Commentary in English : The conscious Soul, being a knower and even though entirely different from the mind, knows the external objects by getting contact with the mind. In fact, the Soul gets the knowledge of external objects through the mind which is his intimate primary internal mean (=instrument). The Soul does not get directly connected with the sense organs, but when he wants to cognize = knows something, then gets connected with the mind; then the mind gets connected with the senses, and the senses get connected with the external objects to grasp it. In this way, the mind gets connected with the sense organs to cognize the external objects, i.e., the mind gets colored with the external object. This mind in itself is also the subject/object for the Soul, i.e., the Soul is cognisor of his object = mind and its modifications, subjects, or objects. However, the real cognisor is the Soul only, but being in intimate contact with the conscious Soul, the mind assumes the nature of consciousness, cognizes the external object through the sense organs, and external objects are grasped by it, and sense organs become the instruments of such cognition. If this is seen with regard to the Soul and mind, then the Soul is the real cognisor, and the mind being in contact with the external objects, becomes the instrument for such cognition of external objects. In the same way during the Cognitive trance, at the time of cognition of the mind, the mind itself becomes the external object for the Soul. So, we see that the mind gets colored both with the external objects and the Soul. When it gets colored with external objects, then it appears in the form of external objects; and when it gets colored with the conscious Soul, then it appears in the form of the Soul.
See, in the state of Argumentative and Meditative Cognitive Trances, the mind gets colored with the external objects and subtle objects of Matter, and the yogi gets the knowledge of respective gross and subtle objects. In both Cognitive Trances, the form of mind appears like the object by which it gets colored, and this is the state of cognition of an object. And in the Egoism Cognitive Trance, the mind being devoid of all the external objects gets colored with the conscious Soul and appears in the form of the conscious Soul, and by such coloring, the yogi gets the cognition of the Conscious Soul. This state is the cognition of the conscious form of the Soul in the mind. (However, the real cognition of the Soul takes place in the Ultra-cognitive Trance with the contact of the Supreme Lord.)
With regard to the coloring of the mind with the Soul, it should be understood that when the mind becomes pure i.e., not having any impurities of Qualities of Activity and Inertia, only then it can get colored with the conscious Soul and appear in the form of Soul. In this state, the mind becomes devoid of external objects (= all the objects of Matter), achieving the base of the Soul. In fact, the mind being inanimate does not have any type of consciousness. Such a type of ability to cognize the external object by the mind is achieved through its intimate contact with the Soul. So, there are two types of consciousness — (1) the eternal conscious Soul; and (2) the mind assuming the conscious form by intimate contact with the Soul; as a movement in the iron takes place when it comes in contact with the load-stone, in the same way, the mind also appears as conscious in the contact of Soul. For this reason, on account of getting the power of consciousness, the mind is the intimate mean (= instrument) of the Soul.
So, on account of taking the form of knower and knowable by the mind, the misled people consider the mind as a conscious object = experiencer of external objects. And some people say that all objects = knowable objects are of the form of mind only — these so-called external objects do not have any independent existence. Mind alone appears in the form of jar-cloth-cow etc., however, there are no such objects. Seer Vyaasa said that all such people are to be pitied. Since the cause of their confusion is that the mind alone appears in the form of knowable and knower, i.e., Soul and external objects. But this confusion can be removed. See in the trance-cognition, whichever object is cognized in the mind, that cognizable object is different from the mind since it becomes the base for trance in the mind. Now if all the objects are in the form of mind = imagined by the mind, then these cannot become the base for the mind, and then how their form can be cognized? so, the external objects are different from the mind; and who cognizes the external objects which become the base in the mind, is the conscious Soul.
In this way, the mind, which takes all the forms, is the primary internal mean (=instrument) for the Soul. So, the intellectuals who know the external objects, Mind, and Soul as different from one another, they alone are the real cognisors, and they alone are able to cognize the Soul in Trance.
