Sutra in English : duHkhadaurmanasyaa~Ngamejayatvashvaasaprashvaasaa vikShepasahabhuvaH.31.

Meaning in English :

(duHkha-daurmanasya-a~Ngame-jayatva-shvaasa-prashvaasaa) Pain, despondency, shakiness, inspiration = in-breathing and expiration = out-breathing are (vikShep-sahabhuvaH) the companions of distractions.

Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss :

Now the result of these distractions are (dukha .....) receipt of pain, despondency = mischievousness of mind, shivering of body elements, speedy movement of in-breathing and out-breathing are the types of afflictions of which results in distraction of mind. These afflictions results in the state of distracted mind and not in the peace and calm state of mind. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - On Worship)

Vyaasa Commentary in English :

Meaning In English :

(duHkham) Pain is either from (aadhyaatmikam) one's own mistakes and from the body, (aadhibhoutikam) caused by the other living beings, (cha) or (aadhi-daivikam) caused by the physical forces = powers of the Matter. (tad duHkham) The pain is that (abhihataaH) affected by (yena) which (praaNinaH) living beings (prayatante) try to (tad-upaghaataaya) destroy that.

(daurmanasyam) Despondency is (kShobhaH) that disturbance of (chetasaH) the mind, (ichchhaavighaataat) which is consequent upon the non-fulfilment of its desire.

(tad a~Ngamejayatvam) The shakiness is that (yat) which (ejayati kampayati a~Ngaani) makes the organs of body to shiver = shake.

(sa shvaasah) Inspiration is that (praaNaH) action of life force (yat) in which (aachaamati) in-breathing the (baahyam vaayum) external air is done.

(sa prashvaasaH) Expiration is that (yat) in which (niH-saarayati) out-breathing the (kauShThyam vaayum) air in the stomach is done.

(ete) These are the (vikShepa-sahabhuvaH) companions of distractions, as (ete) all these (bhavanti) happens in (vikShipta-chittasya) person whose mind is distracted, and (ete) these (na bhavanti) do not happen in person whose (samaahita-chittasya) mind is entranced.

Vedic Commentary in English :

The devotee = person grasped from obstacles of Yoga i.e. disease etc., also receive pain, despondency, shakiness, inspiration and expiration which are companions of distractions, as a result of obstacles. A person with the distracted mind experience these companions; one with the entranced = restrained mind do not experience these companions, since the obstacles of Yoga had ceased to exist. For this reason these five are called companions of distractions which manifest as a result of distractions. These five are —

1.         Pain - Pain is the experience for which one adopt the means to destroy it. This pain is threefold — 1. from one's own mistakes and from the body, 2. caused by other living beings, and 3. caused from physical forces = powers of Matter. This is to be understood as — "caused from own mistakes and body is in the form of disease etc. in body and afflictions, attachment, aversions, illusion, stupid-ness in mind; caused by the other living beings is in the form of pain from enemy, animals like lion, snake etc; and caused from physical forces like on account of heavy rains, extreme cold, extreme heat etc. and on account of distraction of mind and organs." (Light of Truth - Chapter 1). These three types of pain appear in the mind and body, till the obstacles exist.

2.         Despondency - When the devotee, leaving GOD who is the source of all pleasures, believes pleasure-ness in the Matter and its products, desire to acquire these physical objects; and on non-accomplishment of such desire, there is feeling of non-satisfaction, restlessness, pain, sombre-ness in the mind of the devotee. This disturbance of mind is known as despondency. The devotee grasped by despondency, on account of non-fulfilment of his desires, becomes disinclined towards practice of Yoga. This distraction is mainly on account of nescience.

3.         Shakiness - Shivering in the organs of body, not having steadiness is known as shakiness. In this state the devotee is not able to perform posture and achieve steadiness of mind and with the result is not able to achieve any success in Yoga. This distraction also takes place mainly on account of disease etc.

4-5.      Inspiration and Expiration - In-breathing of external air is called 'inspiration' and out-breathing the air in the stomach is called 'expiration'. But on account of suffering from disease etc. this normal processes of body do not remain in the control of devotee and the process of inspiration and expiration take place with fastness or unnaturally. On account of not having control on these processes, devotee is not able to perform "Regulation of Breath" (= the fourth accessory of Yoga). And without performing "Regulation of Breath", mind does not become capable of performing / achieving concentration, meditation and trance. So the abnormal inspiration and expiration become the primary obstacle in the path of Yoga.

These pain etc. being the result of nine obstacles as explained in previous aphorism, one devotee should take steps for their cessation. Once the disease etc. obstacles end, and do not distract the mind, then the companions of these obstacles, which are result of obstacles only, will not manifest at all. It has been already advised that - for cessation of these obstacles = distractions, practice of 'Devotion to GOD' and adoption of desirelessness are important factors. Swami Dayanand Saraswati had clearly mentioned in his commentary on next aphorism that GOD alone is unbeatable weapon to destroy these distractions. So it is important to meditate on the form of GOD, surrender to GOD in all ways along with the performance of Practice and Desirelessness.
