Preface to Sutra in English : athaite vikShepaaH samaadhipratipakShaastaabhyaamevaabhyaasa-vairaagyaabhyaa.m niroddhavyaaH. tatraabhyaasasya viShaya- mupasa.mharannidamaaha —

Meaning in English : (atha) Now (ete vikShepaaH) these distractions are (samaadhi-pratipakShaaH) antagonist of trance, so (taabhyaam eva) these are to be (niroddhavyaaH) restrained = checked (abhyaasa-vairaagyaabhyaam) by the Practice and Desirelessness. (tatra) Out of the two, (upasa.nharan) to finish the (abhyaasasya viShayam) the topic of Practice, (idam aaha) it is said —

Sutra in English : tatpratiShedhaarthamekatattvaabhyaasaH.32.

Meaning in English :

In order to (pratiShedhaartham) prevent = remove (tat) these distractions, one should (ekatattvaabhyaasaH) practice to concentrate on one object i.e. GOD.

Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss :

The only mean to destroy = prevent the above distractions is to become devotee to the GOD, who is the only omnipresent and omniscient object; and follow his teachings as given in Vedas, since HE alone is the unbeatable weapon to destroy these distractions. So the people should love to GOD and follow His teachings faithfully in order to remain away from the distractions etc. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - On Worship)

Meaning In English :

(vikShepa-pratiShedhaartham) For the prevention of distractions of mind (chittam abhyaset) one should practice to concentrate its mind (ekatattva-avalambanam) on one object, i.e. GOD.

(yasya tu) One who believes (chittam) that mind is (pratyartha-niyatam) separate and distinct for every cognized object, (pratyaya-maatram) a type of knowledge (cha) and (kShaNikam) momentary = i.e. remains for a moment only; (tasya) for him (sarvam eva chittam) all minds are (ekaagram) concentrated and mind (na asti eva) cannot be (vikShiptam) distracted. (punaH) Now (yadi) if it is said that (idam) this mind (samaadhiiyate) concentrated on (ekasmin arthe) one object (pratyaahritya sarvataH) by having drawn away from all other objects by the practice of yoga, (tadaa) then (ekaagram bhavati) it is called concentrated, (iti) so (ataH na pratyartha-niyatam) this mind cannot be distinct and separate for every object.

(yaH api) He who (manyate) believes (chittam) the mind (ekaagram) as concentrated (sadrisha-pratyaya-pravaaheNa) on account of flow of similar perceptions = notions, (tasya) his (ekaagrataa) mind's concentration = one-pointedness is, (yadi) on account of (dharmaH) characteristics of (pravaaha-chittasya) of flowing mind, (tadaa) then (pravaaha-chittam) the flowing mind (na asti) cannot be (ekam) one, since (kShaNikatvaat) it is said to be momentary. (atha) Now if the concentration is (dharmaH) the characteristic of (pravaahaa.nshasya eva) a notions = perceptions which are the parts of flow i.e. portion of entire stream (pratyayasya) of flowing mental perceptions, then (sa sarvaH) all the minds are (ekaagra eva) concentrated only, whether (sadrisha-pratyaya-pravaahii vaa visadrisha-pratyaya-pravaahii vaa) it flows along similar notions or dissimilar notions, (pratyartha-niyatatvaat) because in each case it is separate and distinct for every object. (iti) Thus this way also (vikShipta-chittaH) distracted mind (anupapatiH) does not exist. (tasmaat) Hence (ekam chittam) one mind for (anekaartham) different and many objects (avasthitam iti ) exists which is not momentary in nature.

(cha) And if (pratyayaaH) notions = perceptions, which are  (ananvitaaH) unlinked = unrelated and (svabhaava-bhinnaaH) inherently different from one-another, (jaayeran) are born (ekena chittena) to a single mind (atha) then (katham bhavet) how would (anyaH) other mind (smarttaa) remember (pratyaya-driShTasya) the notions = perceptions = objects seen  / cognized by (anyaH) other mind ? (cha) And this way (upabhoktaa) enjoyer of fruits of (karmaashayasya) vehicles of actions (anya pratyayopachittasya) gathered by the other mind, (bhavet) will be (anyaH pratyaya) some other mind! (katha~nchit) However by any logic / mean this defective principle (samaadhiiyamaanam api) is solved, (etat) this principle = principle of momentary mind (aakShipati) will defeat the (gomayapaayasiiyam nyaayam) maxim of "cow dung and milk".

(kim cha) And further (chittasya anyatve) if the minds are separate and distinct for every cognized objects, then it (apahnavaH praapnoti) involves the falsification of (svaatmaanubhavaH) one's own experiences. (katham) How will one say (yat aham adraakSham tat sprishaami) "I am touching that what I saw" (cha) and (yat aspraakSham tat pashyaami iti aham) "I am seeing that which I touched." (iti) This way (pratyayaH) notions = perceptions of self  (upasthitaH) exist (abhedena) as it is (pratyayini) in one Knower (sarvasya pratyayasya bhede sati) even if all the notions are different from one-another. (katham) How (ayam) this (abhedaatmaa) identical perception = notion happening in the same way (eka-pratyaya-viShayaH) about the same object that (aham iti pratyayaH) "I am" always existing, will (aashrayet)  refer = relate to (saamaanyam ekam pratyayinam) one common Knower if (varttamaanaH) this notion = perception exists (atyanta-bhinneShu chitteShu) in entirely different minds.

(cha) And (ayam) this notion of (abhedaatmaa aham iti pratyayaH) "I am" as on undifferentiated self is (sva-anubhava-graahyaH) cognized by internal perception by everyone. (cha) And (pratyakShasya maahaatmyam) authority and importance of direct perception of oneself (na abhibhuuyate) cannot be defeated (pramaaNaantareNa) by any other means of knowledge. (cha) Since (pramaaNaantaram) other means of knowledge (vyavahaaram labhate) works (pratyakSha-balenaiva) only on the strength of direct perception. (tasmaat) Hence (chittam) mind is (ekam) one (anekaartham) although it is applied to many objects (cha) and (avasthitam) exists permanently till salvation i.e. it is not momentary.

Vedic Commentary in English :

Seer Patanjali had advised the practice to concentrate on GOD, in order to restrain = destroy the obstacles and their companions. By meditating on this one object = GOD, His form and being merged in HIM, all the obstacles of Yoga cease to exist. In this regard Swami Dayanand Saraswati very clearly said that - "The only mean to destroy = prevent the above distractions is to become devotee to the GOD, who is the only omnipresent and omniscient object, and follow his teachings as given in Vedas, since HE alone is the unbeatable weapon to destroy these distractions. So the people should love to GOD and follow his teachings faithfully in order to remain away from the distractions etc."

Query :- Most of the commentators have advised for concentration on any one object, not for only and only GOD. Bhoja and Vijyaanabhikshu were also of same view. Bhoja had said for any one desired object, and Vijyaanabhikshu had asked even to take any gross object for concentration. Since in aphorism 1.29, devotion to GOD had already been advised for cessation of distractions, then in such case it will be mere repetition here and will be considered as a defect.

Solution :- As per Vedic philosophy and philosophy of Yoga, there are only three eternal and independent objects - 1. GOD, 2. Soul and 3. Matter and objects made from it. If we do not accept GOD as object for concentration, then only two objects are left for concentration for being taken as 'one object'. There will be following defects in accepting these objects for concentration —

1.         In the first case we accept 'Matter and its products' as an object for concentration. Seer Patanjali had considered material objects as viewable in aphorism 2.18. In this regard while analysing the cause of 'pain' it is said —

            heyam duHkham-anaagatam. (Yoga 2.16)

i.e. the pain which can be received in future is avoidable. This future pain alone is removable. The cause of this pain is explained in next aphorism as —

            draShTri-drishyayoH sa.nyogo heyahetuH. (Yoga 2.17)

i.e. the conjunction of the Soul and the Matter and its resulting products in the form of mind etc. is the cause of avoidable pain. In the coming aphorisms nature, properties and form of Matter is explained.

Now it is to be understood that conjunction of Soul and Matter is said as the cause of pains which can be received in future. In such case taking "Matter" as 'one object' for concentration, and by practice of such concentration considering the possibility of removal of pain, is totally against the principle of seer Patanjali and seer Vyaasa.

Again in aphorism 1.15 seer Patanjali had defined the Desirelessness as being thirstless towards the perceptible (objects) and scriptural enjoyments; and without accomplishment of desirelessness one cannot achieve trance. In such case seer Patanjali who had advised to become thirstless towards the material objects, cannot advise to practice for concentrating on the Matter and its products. So cessation of obstacles (disease etc.) and its companions (pain etc.) is not possible by taking Matter and its objects as 'one object' for concentration.

2.         In the second case we accept 'Soul' as an object for concentration. Soul is said as conscious object = viewer. Practice of concentration of 'Self' by Viewer = Soul, also cannot become base for cessation of obstacles. If by such practice removal = cessation of obstacles is considered as possible, then the viewer who is pure and experiencer of knowledge - (Ref - 'draShTaa drishimaatraH suddho.api pratyayaanupashyaH' 2.20); then on knowing and understanding that his conjunction with Matter will cause pain, cannot get conjunct with the Matter and experience pain there from. Hence by the practice of his own form by Soul, who is grasped by the afflictions of nescience etc., removal = cessation of obstacles is not possible.

Similarly by practice of concentration on the form of salvated Soul, removal = cessation of obstacles is not possible. Since no Soul can be ever free from afflictions, action, fruition and residual potencies, on the other hand GOD is not related to these, at all times.

3.         The third object is GOD, and removal = cessation of obstacles and their companions is possible by practice of concentration on the form of GOD. It is also clear from the context that by meditation on the form of GOD, and devotion to GOD, obstacles of Yoga cease to exist.

One who speaks of repetition of devotion and meditation of GOD, they should see that seer Patanjali had advised the surrender to GOD twice in the next chapter i.e. in aphorism 2.1 and 2.32 which is also a repetition. It should be kept in mind that the ultimate object of Yoga is cognizance of GOD, so surrender to GOD, devotion to GOD, meditation of GOD is repeated as a principle mean to achieve the ultimate goal of Yoga.

So from 'one object' it is prudent to accept GOD alone for practice of concentration.

While writing the commentary on this aphorism seer Vyaasa had abrogated the concept of momentary mind. This should not be taken as refutation of principles of Buddhism. Since commentary of seer Vyaasa was available well before the time of Buddha. The momentary theory was even popular in some sections of society, even in earlier times i.e. before the time of seer Vyaasa, which was adopted by Buddha during his time. Seer Kapila had also refuted this theory in his Saankhya Philosophy.

As per momentary theory no object is stable. Existence of every object is momentary. Every moment a new object is manifested and older one cease to exist. Similarly mind is also momentary. Every moment a new mind manifest in place of earlier existing mind i.e. the mind of previous moment. This concept is vague and absurd for the purpose of concentration of mind and trance. Seer Vyaasa had shown the following defects in this regard —

1.         The mind being coming into existence every moment, and grasp any object or subject, cease to exist after grasping that object / subject. In this process, a new mind will be there for every next subject or object. When no mind can grasp two subjects or objects, then mind is concentrated only, so the advice for performance of Yoga for achieving concentration is useless.

2.         If the momentary theorist says that for every subject or object a separate mind is fixed and he has to draw away the mind from all other object and get tranced on one object; then this concept is against the momentary theory. Then such mind cannot be momentary and further it is not possible to fix the different fixed minds for one subject or object.

3.         If they believes that the mind, which is changing every moment, is distracted since its modifications = subject / object is changing every moment; and one-pointedness is the flow of similar notions so in order to maintain this position the performance of Yoga is necessary. On this seer Vyaasa questioned that you have believed one-pointedness as flow of similar perceptions, then is this flow is the characteristic of mind? or is the flow is the characteristic of perceptions? In the first case - since the mind is momentary, the concept of flowing mind is not possible. When the mind is in changing every moment, then what is the base for the flow of similar perceptions? When the mind the previous moment is not existing, then existence of the modification of that previous mind i.e. cognizing the modification which took place in mind which is not existing in the present moment, is a self contradictory statement. In the second case the mind cannot be proved distracted, since the notion which is taking place, is of similar flow or of dissimilar flow, is momentary only. And since the separate mind is fixed for every subject / object, so it is concentrated only.

4.         If the momentary theorist believes that different types of unrelated notions can take place with one mind, so the advice of performance of Yoga is necessary for concentration of mind. The defect in this concept is that how a mind, which is changing, by a new mind, every moment, can remember = cognize a notion which was cognized by the other non-existing previous minds? And the enjoyer of fruits of actions gathered by the previous non-existing minds, will be a mind which is existing in the present moment !!! This principle is inferior to the maxim of "cow dung and milk". As somebody says that both the sweets / foods "made from the milk of cow" and "cow dung" are equally eatable, since both are made from the products of cow, is not correct. Similar is the above concept of momentary theory.

5.         The principal defect of the momentary theory is that it is against the direct perception = real cognition. In the normal affairs of life, everybody believes and accepts that I am touching an object, which I had seen; and seeing the object which I had touched. Here the organs of touching and seeing are different, but mind which is cognizing the notion of touch and seeing is one only. This experience is not possible with the momentary mind. In such case the mind which cognized the notion of seeing an object, is not available at the time of touching that object; and at the present moment the mind which is cognizing the notion of touching the object was not existing at the time of seeing that object, and this present mind will not exist in the next moment when one will decide that What I had seen and touched is same object. In this way such process of perception = knowledge cannot take place with the different minds. The perception = knowledge of real cognition is the strongest among all the modes perceptions, since other modes are dependent upon the direct cognition.

So one permanent = non-momentary mind, for different types of knowledge of many objects, exists. And the advice for performance of Yoga is prudent for concentration of such mind. With this one mind alone, by practice of concentration on the form of GOD, all obstacles of Yoga get removed.

However there was no mention of momentary mind in the aphorism, but seer Vyaasa had abrogated the concept of momentary mind in his commentary. Since such conception, being the main obstacle for performance of Yoga, was popular in some sectors of people, so seer Vyaasa critically analysed the same here. For removal of obstacles of Yoga, advice of practice of concentration on the form of GOD is possible only when the mind is accepted as disturbed, stupefied and / or distracted. In the momentary theory the above states of mind are not possible and is concentrated only, as such there is no need for practice of concentration, so the advice of performance of Yoga was useless. So a single non-momentary mind is proved by logic here for which such advice is useful.

Seer Patanjali had also abrogated the momentary theory in aphorism 4.20 and 4.21 which is explained there.
