Preface to Sutra in English : yasya chittasyaavasthitasyeda.m shaastreNa parikarma nirdishyate tatkatham —

Meaning in English : (parikarma) The means of purifying (nirdishyate) are taught (idam shaastreNa) by this science of Yoga (yasya avasthitasya chittasya) for the permanent existing mind, (tat katham) what type of these purifying means are —

Sutra in English : maitriikaruNaamuditopekShaaNaa.m sukhaduHkha-puNyaapuNyaviShayaaNaa.m bhaavanaatashchitta-prasaadanam.33.

Meaning in English :

(bhaavanaataH) By the habits = thoughts of (maitrii-karuNaa-muditaa-upekShaaNaam) friendliness, compassion, joy and indifference towards (sukha-duHkha-puNya-apuNya-vishyaaNaam) happiness, misery, virtue and sin, (chitta-prasaadanam) peace = purity of mind is achieved.

Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss :

One should have the thoughts of friendliness towards the persons who are happy in this world; become compassionate towards persons suffering from pain; have the thoughts of joy for the virtuous; and be indifferent towards the persons involved in the sinful acts, i.e. no support = love  and / or hatred. In this way the devotee's soul become full of light of truth and his mind gets concentrated.

(Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - On Worship)

Vyaasa Commentary in English :

tatra sarvapraaNiShu sukhasambhogaapanneShu maitrii.m bhaavayet.  duHkhiteShu karuNaam. puNyaatmakeShu muditaam. apuNyashiileShuupekShaam. evamasya bhaavayataH shuklo dharma upajaayate.  tatashcha  chitta.m  prasiidati  prasannamekaagra.m sthitipada.m labhate.

Meaning In English :

The practitioner of Yoga =a devotee (tatra) out of the four means, should (bhaavayet) have the thought of (maitriim) friendliness towards (sarva-praaNiShu) all the beings who are (sukha-sambhogaapanneShu) endowed with the enjoyment of pleasure; (karuNaam) compassion towards (duHkhiteShu) who are miserable; (muditaam) joy towards (puNyaatmakeShu) who are involved in virtuous acts; and (upekShaam) be indifferent towards (apuNyashiileShu) the persons who are doing sinful acts.

(evam) This way (bhaavayataH) by habituating the mind to these notions, (shuklaH-dharma) the light of pure religion = characteristics / properties (upajaayate) engendered in (asya) this Yogi = devotee. (cha) And (tataH) with the light of such truth (chittam) the mind becomes (prasiidati) pure; and (prasannam) such pure mind becomes (ekaagram) concentrated and (labhate) attains the (sthitipadam) state of steadiness.

Vedic Commentary in English :

After advising the means for removal of obstacles, Seer Patanjali is now advising means for the stability and purity of mind in the coming aphorisms. The devotee cannot achieve the trance till the stability of mind is achieved along with purity of mind. Purity of mind can be achieved on removal of impurities. Impurities in the mind are generated on account of attachment, aversion, jealousy etc., which take place by the modifications of Activity and Inertia Qualities. These impurities distract the mind and make it impure and devotee moves away from the path of Yoga. These impurities can be termed as —

1.         Impurity of Attachment - After experiencing the pleasure, one wish to achieve the same type of experience again; and this is impurity of attachment. Because of attachment towards the worldly affairs and means of pleasure, the mind gets disturbed and becomes unsteady.

2.         Impurity of Jealousy - By seeing the property and prosperity of others, the commotion, which has taken place in the mind, is called impurity of jealousy.

3.         Impurity of other's harm-ness - The mind also becomes impure on doing harm to others or causing pain to others.

4.         Impurity of Defect-finding - When one wish to find the defects in others intellects and puts wrong blames on them, it is called impurity of defect-finding.

5.         Impurity of Aversion - Having anger on others, without any reason thereof which results in aversion is called the impurity of aversion. This is one of the prime cause of making the mind impure.

6.         Impurity of non-bearness - When someone do any wrong to us or disgrace us, and we react for that and try to hurt other or wish to take revenge of it, is the impurity of non-bear-ness.

The mind affected by above types of impurities, cannot become concentrated. Hence for achieving the purity of mind, seer Patanjali had advised some means for the devotees who want to pursue on the path of Yoga. As a first mean he had advised the behaviour to be adopted towards the living beings who have happiness, misery, perform virtue and sin.

The devotee should have the thoughts of friendliness towards the persons who are happy and / or having the material objects providing happiness. This thought is important since one do not wish the reciprocal beneficiation from friends (otherwise one do not consider other as friend); secondly the feeling of jealousy should not manifest in the mind of devotee. The devotee should not think that these people are enjoying pleasure from material worldly affairs, and I am living painful life, as I do not have such material enjoyments. Otherwise the thoughts of jealousy and aversion will affect his behaviour and his mind will become impure, and thereby he will not be able to move on the path of performance of Yoga.

The devotee should have the thought of compassion towards the persons who are suffering from pain and are miserable; he should never hate them. The devotee should not become indifferent on seeing the pains of others, he should try to remove the pains of others. With the available means with him, he should help them and have feeling of mercy on them so that his mind will have the feeling of happiness not hatred-ness which is important for the purity of mind.

The devotee should have the thought of joy-ness for the virtuous. He should feel happy and support their virtuous behaviour and should never have aversion for them. On seeing the honour of the virtuous deeds of others, some people do have the feeling of aversion towards them and they think like - See, he is becoming and showing virtuous-ness !!! what virtue has he done? He is doing the show-business only, etc. The devotee should remain away from such type of thoughts and aversion-ness and should support the virtuous deeds of others by mind, voice and acts so that his mind becomes pure.

The devotee should remain indifferent towards the persons involved in the sinful acts. He should neither support their acts by mind, voice and deeds, nor have the feeling of aversion towards them. He should not have any attachment for them, nor have any feeling of aversion. He should have the feeling of indifference towards vice persons which is devoid of attachment and aversion. By having any type of attachment, or by supporting the sinful deeds by mind, voice and bodily deeds, the devotee will accumulate such type of residual potencies in his mind which are harmful for him and will become the cause of his downfall; and on having aversion towards the sinful person, his mind will become impure and will not be able to move on the path of Yoga. In this regard it is possible that he should advise such other persons for not doing sinful acts, so that they can remain away from sin and perform virtue deeds. But he should not have the feeling of sadness if such people do not accept his advice.

It is important to understand that the thoughts of happiness towards the virtuous, and indifference towards the sin-doers are primary, and thoughts of friendliness and compassion are regulated and effected as per the virtuous and sinful modifications of the persons. For example if somebody is having the worldly enjoyments which are accumulated by the sin-full acts in the life, and experiencing pleasure therefrom in his present life, then in such case the devotee should not have the thought of friendliness toward him but should have the thought of indifference for his sin-full deeds. If we will have the thought of friendliness towards such persons, then on account of mental, verbal or bodily supports towards his sin-full deeds, our mind will become impure and our behaviour will also be affected, directly or indirectly, by the defects of vice acts.

In this way, by habituating the mind in the above manner towards the four types of people, there is no accumulation of impurities of attachment, aversion, jealousy, hatred-ness etc. and mind of the devotee becomes pure. Since attachment and aversion etc. are the means of distraction of mind, so on having the properties of attachment and aversion, there is manifestation of jealousy, hatred-ness, lust, anger, etc. in the mind. In this way the mind become distracted, and devotee cannot move on the path of Yoga. On cessation of attachment and aversion, the mind can become concentrated. So for the complete cessation of these impurities, there is an advice of habituating the mind with the notions of friendliness etc. By the performance of above means of purity, the light of truth is manifested in the mind of devotee and mind becomes steady, pure and calm. These are the external means of achieving the trance. By the performance of these means of purity, the mind becomes concentrated = achieves the state of steadiness and is able to achieve trance.
