In English:
Component Word : tat eva arthamaatranirbhaasam svaruupashuunyam iva samaadhiH.
Sutra in English : tadevaarthamaatranirbhaasa.m svaruupashuunyamiva samaadhiH.3.
Meaning in English : (tadeva) The same Meditation when (artha-maatra-nirbhaasam) showing the real form of the object alone, and (svaruupa-shuunyam-iva) devoid, as it were, of its own form (samaadhiH) is Trance.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : — As the iron becomes fire only, in the mid of fire, so, in the same way, trance means that after forgetting the physical body, the Soul is being enlightened by the knowledge and bliss of the Supreme Soul GOD. The distinction between Meditation and Trance is that in Meditation the meditator, mind, and object of meditation are present, but in the case of Trance the Soul is absorbed in the blissful form of GOD. There is no distinction between the three. As one dives into the deep water and remains there for some moments, so, the Soul also dives into the GOD and gets blessed there and comes out again in this world. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on Worship)
— When there is no distinction between the meditator, Meditation, and object, then the Trance is achieved. (Discussion of Swami Dayanand Saraswati with Pandit Taracharan Tarkaratna - as per "Rishi Dayanand ke Patra and viGYaapan" Part 1)
—The result of the seven accessories of Yoga is Trance.
(Rigvedaadibhaashya-bhuumikaa - on Worship)
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : dhyaanameva dhyeyaakaaranirbhaasam pratyayaatmakena svaruupeNa shuunyamiva yadaa bhavati dhyeyasvabhaavaaveshaattadaa samaadhirityuchyate.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (yadaa) When (dhyaanam eva) Meditation alone, (dhyeya-svabhaava-aveshaat) being entirely taken over by the object of contemplation and (dhyeyaakaara-nirbhaasam) appearing in the form of the contemplated object, (bhavati) becomes (shuunyam iva) devoid, as it were, (pratyayaatmakena svaruupeNa) of its nature of self-cognition, (tadaa) then (samaadhiH iti uchyate) it is called Trance.
Vedic Commentary in English : When there is uniformity of knowledge of an object, it is called Meditation. While meditating when the form of the object alone is known, and the form of the Yogi also becomes devoid, as it were, then such a state of Meditation is known as Trance.
In Yajurveda 9.3 the word "samaahitam" is there, which is explained as "samyak sarvato dhritam" by Swami Dayanand i.e., grasping thoroughly from all sides. In fact, when the targeted object alone is known and grasped thoroughly, that state is Trance.
In the case of meditation, there remains a distinction between the meditator, the object of meditation, and meditation; on the other hand, trance is without any such distinction. This is the difference between Meditation and Trance. While in the Cognitive Trance, the objects are cognized; however, when all the modifications of the mind are restrained then it is known as Trance (Ultra-cognitive) only. In fact, at the time of Trance, the form of the object alone is known out of meditater, object, and meditation; and the form of the other two become devoid of their own form, and is not known. Swami Dayanand gave the meaning with context to GOD by these words — "As the iron becomes fire only, in the mid of fire, so, in the same way, Trance means that after forgetting the physical body, the Soul is being enlightened by the knowledge and bliss of Supreme Soul GOD." Here Soul does not become latent in the GOD, nor it become like the GOD; but on becoming enlightened by the knowledge and bliss of GOD, forgets himself, and knows only and only GOD alone. For this reason, Seer Patanjali had used the words "svaruupa-shuunyam-iva" and not "svaruupa-shuunyam".
Seer Patanjali explained the attainments which are achieved by the Trance of various subjects = objects, in this chapter. So, GOD alone is not the object of Trance. Whichever subject or object is made as the base of Trance, that object is known by the yogi during that time.
Concentration, Meditation, and Trance are said as internal accessories to Cognitive Trance, but these three are external to Ultra-cognitive Trance. (Refer to aphorisms 3.7 and 3.8). From this, it is to be known that various subjects = objects explained, in these aphorisms, are related to Matter, its products, and Soul only, which are cognized by the devotee in the various cognitive trances (i.e., argumentative, meditative, beatitude, and egoism cognitive trances). Trance taking place on various subjects = objects of this chapter come in one of four categories of Cognitive Trance only. The various attainments on account of Sanyama on these subjects = objects are explained in this chapter.
An Experiment
In the Vedas and Vedic scriptures, GOD alone is said as the ultimate target of the Soul. In upaniShadas also knowledge of GOD is explained primarily. Swami Dayanand Saraswati also said that GOD is the primary target of Trance. Here we are giving an experiment in order to reach the stage of Trance which is described by Swami Dayanand Saraswati, i.e., to experience the state of knowledge and bliss of GOD by the Soul, on the basis of Vedic hymn. It will not be easy for a devotee, in the beginning, to perform this experiment, but by regular practice, this state can be achieved in due course of time. The Trance achieved by this experiment will not be a Cognitive Trance, but it will be a pre-stage of Ultra-cognitive Trance. For this one should keep the following facts in mind before proceeding to perform this experiment, which are necessary for its accomplishment —
1. etaavaanasya mahimaato jyaayaa.nshcha puuruShaH.
paado.asya vishvaa bhuutani tripaadasya-amritam divi. Yajurveda 31.3.
O Men! This visible and invisible world is the glory of the Supreme Lord; by this Omnipresent Supreme Lord is extremely praiseworthy and great; and all animate and inanimate objects of gross objects and others are in one part of Supreme Lord; and three parts of Creator of World are immortal (i.e., where destruction do not take place) which are in His own illuminating form.
Purport:- This whole animate and inanimate world, consisting of the Sun, Moon, and other regions, by the imagination of variegated creation, by establishing greatness of GOD, exists in HIS one-fourth part at all times i.e., in past, present, and future even after the increase or decrease by creation, existence, and destruction; and even not reaching to the limit of the fourth part of Supreme Lord. HIS three parts always exist in His own immortal liberated form. By this statement, HIS infinity is not challenged, but HIS greatness in comparison to the universe, and the smallness of the universe is described. (Swami Dayanand Saraswati)
It means that this full universe — the Matter, its gross and subtle products = objects, all Soul who are in the life-cycle taking births in various life-states exist in one part of GOD; in fact, this universe does not reach up to that part even, but it remains in the same part of GOD even after its varied movement. And no product of Matter and/or Matter exists in the other three parts in any way. There GOD only exists in HIS pure form.
2. The soul remains in contact with the three types of bodies - gross physical body, subtle body, and casual body during the period of bondage and/or creation. These three types of bodies are formed from products of Matter and cease to exist by proper efforts for salvation.
3. The vastness of this universe is to be ascertained by inference. It should be understood that this universe is finite, which appears to be infinite; and after the universal sphere Matter and its products are not available.
This visible universe is a group of galaxies that are countless as per human knowledge. Every galaxy has innumerable stars = suns, and every sun has its solar system which contains planets that revolve around their respective sun; as our solar system contains eight planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune; and some of the planets further have sub-planets named as moons; out of the eight planets we live on a small planets Earth in this universe. Distance of space is measured in the unit of a light-year. The vastness of galaxies is to be understood with reference to light-years. We have given some video clips to show the vastness of this universe on our website www.vedyog.net by seeing those videos one can have such knowledge easily.
4. Devotees should clearly understand by the study of Vedic scriptures in what form the cognizance of GOD takes place. Otherwise, he will not be able to gain even after reaching that state or he will stop much before that state. (In this regard our book - "Parmaatma-saakshaatkaar kaisa" (in Hindi) will be helpful, which is available for free download from our website www.vedyog.net)
5. “An emancipated soul has no physical body or bodily organs but he retains his pure natural attributes and powers ... Just as when the soul is embodied, he depends upon his physical body and bodily organs to carry out his will, so, he enjoys the bliss of Emancipation through the use of his innate power.
Question - What is the nature of this power, and of how many kinds is it?
Answer - Really it is of one kind, but it may be said to consist of the following 24 varieties:- 1. Strength; 2. Energy; 3. Attraction; 4. Suggestion; 5. Motion; 6. Intimidation; 7. Analytic power; 8. Skill; 9. Courage; 10. Memory; 11. Discernment; 12. Desire; 13. Love; 14. Gladness; 15. Association; 16. Dissociation; 17. Dividing power; 18. Combining power; 19. Power of sight; 20. Hearing; 21. Touch; 22. Taste; 23. Smell; 24. Knowledge." (Chapter 9, Light of Truth).
In this experiment, after cessation of the physical body, the yogi moves on the basis of this instrumental body of innate powers. Though the Soul has no such power to use his innate powers during the period of bondage, however, there is no harm in using such powers during the trance for the purpose of this experiment. And the existence of subtle and causal bodies also does not become a hindrance in this experiment. Otherwise, Soul can move ahead in this experiment by destroying his subtle and causal bodies also.
Experiment:- (Sentences given in brackets explain the state of affairs, and are instructions only.)
The devotee should sit in a particular posture of his choice at a lonely place. (Such a place should be preferred where presence = experience an excessive level of air, smell, sound, the light should not be there since these will become obstacles in the experiment). First of all, modifications of the mind are to restrained from external subjects and should be fixed in himself = Soul. He should understand that I (= Soul) am the performer of all these and successive activities and I am doing these activities with full knowledge and authority and will do so. The devotee should imagine that my contact with the physical gross body has ended i.e., I have died = left this physical body. He should also see that the physical body has since been cremated by the relatives. After the cessation of the relationship with the physical body, now there is no relation with the relatives, friends, wealth, property, etc. which were or appeared to be mine due to the physical body. At this time subtle and causal bodies exist, but these are not a hindrance in the experiment. (In the beginning, it is not possible to destroy the subtle and causal bodies of the devotee, but this is possible after continuous practice. Now the Soul should consider himself with the instrumental body).
Now I (= Soul) am moving in the universe at a very high speed (speed of mind), with my natural power of movement. I am going to that place where this universe ends. I have moved out from this solar system and moved into the galaxy to cross it, leaving behind various stars, and I have crossed this galaxy too. In my journey, various galaxies are coming and I am crossing these galaxies one by one. (The devotee should not lose his way in the number of galaxies, but he should cross these galaxies without getting involved in the beautiful sights, stars, places, etc. The devotee is knowing the color, smell, touch, sound, etc while crossing the galaxies; he should not stop there while viewing any beautiful desired scene, since it is not his target. The devotee who stops or wanders in viewing any such scene, cannot achieve GOD.)
Now the end of the universe has reached. The Soul has crossed the end of the universe with the same speed; and as a diver dips in the deep sea, in the same way, I, after crossing the universe made of Matter, have drowned in the GOD who is present even after this universe. (Here there is no form; no light; no sound; no smell; no taste; no touch; nor Matter nor its products are there.) Here only and only GOD is present, available till infinity. Whatever is there is GOD and only GOD, and I am in between the GOD. No other experience. Now I am in the GOD; and pervaded by GOD from every side. GOD alone is present in me and outside me. (There is no movement now, but only to be dipped in His form. In the absence of any type of gravitational force, one does not fall, but moves in the sky; in the same way, the Soul is just moving in the GOD and is experiencing HIS presence.) I am full of HIS knowledge and bliss. Being present in GOD, I am gratified with HIS knowledge and bliss. (This position ends when the devotee does any comparison of bliss and knowledge so, received, or thinks about the properties of Matter; or thinks about the presence of organs and mind, etc. of subtle body; or makes any modification about the worldly affairs in any way; or there is obstruction on account of a high level of light, good or bad smell, various sounds, high level of touch of air present at the place where he is sitting; and devotee comes back in the worldly state. In the beginning, a high level of effort is required to achieve this state. But by regular practice, this state is achieved for some moments, and the duration of this state can be increased by regular practice. The presence of knowledge of the Soul along with the experience and cognizance of GOD in this state is called Meditation; and when the Soul is experiencing GOD alone after forgetting his own form, is called Trance.)
Swami Dayanand Saraswati wrote — "As one dives in the deep water and remains there for some moments, so, the Soul also dives into the GOD and gets blessed there and come out again in this world." This position is to be understood in this experiment. Soul experiences and cognizes the GOD for the duration, when he is not having any modification of Matter and its products. To reach this state again and again one has to practice continuously with devotion, surrender, and knowledge.
