Component Word : trayam ekatra sa.myamaH.
Sutra in English : trayamekatra sa.myamaH.4.
Meaning in English : (trayam) The three = Concentration, Meditation, and Trance, (ekatra) on one object = subject is called (sa.nyamaH) Sanyama.
Or it can be described as —
(sa.nyamaH) Sanyama is (trayam) when the three = Concentration, Meditation, and Trance are (ekatra) performed on a single object or subject.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : On the object where Concentration is started, the same is becoming the object of Meditation and the same is becoming the object of Trance alone, i.e., being absorbed in the form of the GOD, is called Sanyama which is on one object at the same time, i.e., Meditation is related to Concentration, and Trance is attached to Meditation. There is very little difference in time between the three, but when Trance takes place, then the fruit of the three is the same i.e., being blessed. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on Worship)
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : tadetaddhaaraNaadhyaanasamaadhitrayamekatra sa.myamaH. ekaviShayaaNi triiNi saadhanaani sa.myama ityuchyate. tadasya trayasya taantrikii paribhaaShaa sa.myama iti.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (tat etat) These (dhaaraNaa-dhyaana-samaadhi-trayam) three together i.e., Concentration, Meditation, and Trance, (ekatra) on a single object = subject, is (sa.nyamaH) Sanyama, i.e., (triiNi saadhanaani) the practice of three accessories (eka-viShayaaNi) on a single subject = object (uchyate) is called (sa.nyamaH iti) Sanyama. (tat sa.nyamaH) The word "Sanyama" (taantrikii paribhaaShaa) is a technical term (asya trayasya iti) of the science of these three, in this scripture.
Vedic Commentary in English : Seer Patanjali had described various attainments by performing Sanyama on various subjects = objects, in this chapter. What is this Sanyama? This has been explained as that when Concentration, Meditation, and Trance take place on one subject = object, then it is known as Sanyama. This definition is applicable in this scripture only. In the philosophy of Yoga wherever Sanyama is prescribed with regard to a subject = object, it will mean that one has to perform Concentration, Meditation, and Trance on that subject = object. If these three are not on one subject i.e., are on more than one subject, then this will not be known as Sanyama in the philosophy of Yoga, and the devotee will not be able to achieve those attainments, as prescribed in this chapter. Hence in order to obtain any attainment, it is necessary to perform Concentration, Meditation, and Trance on the subject = object of the particular attainment which is described in various aphorisms of this chapter.
As in the case of attainments, Sanyama on different subjects = objects is necessary; in the same way for achieving cognizance of GOD, who is said as the ultimate goal of the Soul, GOD should be the subject of Concentration, Meditation, and Trance, otherwise, cognizance of GOD will not be possible. Concentration on "AUM", being the denoter of GOD, its repetition, Meditation in the form of uniformity of flow of knowledge of GOD, and Trance in the form of cognizance of GOD in its real form alone, is the only way to achieve the GOD. The result of such Sanyama is that the soul gets absorbed in the form of GOD.
For those who accept external places/objects for concentration, their conception is refuted here, since Meditation and Trance cannot be performed in the external places accepted for Concentration. Meditation and Trance take place in the mind only. Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa do not accept external places for Meditation and Trance; even the objects given for Concentration as the Sun, Moon, and Dhruva = pole star in aphorisms 3.26 to 3.28 are not external objects, this is very clearly established in the explanation to those aphorisms.
In the explanation to this aphorism, Swami Dayanand Saraswati had said that -
"On the object where Concentration is started, the same is becoming the object of Meditation and same is becoming the object of Trance alone, ..........."
When as per Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa, the external objects have no relation with the Meditation and Trance, then only internal organs of the body are to be accepted as places of concentration such as navel plexus, heart, heart, brain, fore-part of the nose and fore-part of the tongue, etc. Fixing the mind in such places by modification and concentrating on an object = subject is called Concentration. Having Meditation and Trance on the same subject = object is called Sanyama. So, accepting any external object for Sanyama is against the principle of Yoga; further, the place of Concentration is secondary, and the subject = object of concentration is the primary one, where Meditation and Trance are to be achieved.
