Component Word : tasya bhuumiShu viniyogaH.
Sutra in English : tasya bhuumiShu viniyogaH.6.
Meaning in English : (tasya) This Sanyama (viniyogaH) is to be applied to (bhuumiShu) different planes (= positions) of Yoga.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : tasya sa.myamasya jitabhuumeryaa.anantaraa bhuumistatra viniyogaH. na hyajitaadharabhuumiranantarabhuumi.m vila~Nghya praantabhuumiShu sa.myama.m labhate. tadabhaavaachcha kutastasya praj~naalokaH. iishvaraprasaadaajjitottarabhuumikasya cha naadharabhuumiShu parachittaj~naanaadiShu sa.myamo yuktaH. kasmaata tadarthasyaanyata evaavagatatvaat. bhuumerasyaa iyamanantaraa bhuumirityatra yoga evopaadhyaayaH. kathama eva.m hyuktam —

Ancient seer Meaning in English : (jitabhuumeH) When a plane (= position) has been conquered (tasya sa.nyamasya) by that Sanyama, (viniyogaH) it is to be applied (tatra) to that (bhuumiH) plane (= position), (yaa) which is (anantaraa) the next immediately following. (hi) Since (ajitaadhara-bhuumiH) without conquering the lower planes i.e., without achieving the initial position, and (vila~Nghya) leaving the (anantara-bhuumim) further planes (= positions), devotee = performer of Yoga (na labhate) does not achieve (sa.nyamam) Sanyama (praanta-bhuumiShu) in higher planes (= position) of Yoga. (cha) And (tat abhaavaat) without achieving the Sanyama (kutaH) how (praj~naalokaH) the Illumination of cognition can be achieved (tasya) by that Yogi. (cha) And however, for him, (jita-uttarabhuumikasya) who has conquered the higher planes (= positions) of Yoga (iishvaraprasaadaat) by the bliss of GOD, (sa.nyamaH) Sanyama (adharabhuumiShu) in lower planes (= positions) i.e., (parachitta-j~naanaadiShu) knowledge of other's mind, etc. (na yuktaH) is not required. (kasmaat) Why is it not required? Since (tat arthasya) the object of those planes (= positions) (avagatatvaat) are achieved (anyataH eva) by other means i.e., the bliss of GOD, so, the Sanyama in earlier planes (= positions) are not required.
(atra) As to, (iyam bhuumiH) this plane (= position) is (anantaraa) next to (asyaa bhuumeH iti) this is the achieved plane (= position), (yogaH eva) practice of Yoga alone (upaadhyaayaH) teach the Yogi. (katham) How? (hi) Since (evam uktam) it has been so, saying —
(yogaH) Yoga is (j~naatavyaH) to be known (yogena) by yoga, (yogaH) the yoga (pravarttate) becomes manifest (yogaat) by the practice of Yoga; (yaH tu apramattaH) and who is not negligent in the means of Yoga i.e., the practice of yoga, (saH) he (yoge ramate chiram) enjoys the Yoga for long (yogena iti) by the practice of Yoga.
Vedic Commentary in English : The yogi achieves the trance-cognition in the subject = object where he performs Sanyama. It is required for the yogi to apply the Sanyama in the succeeding higher planes of Yoga i.e., in more subtle objects = subjects and achieve the trance-cognition in those subjects = objects.
What are the different planes of Yoga? Seer Vyaasa had not given any reference in this regard. In this regard, Seer Patanjali had given the sequence of trances in the first chapter by way of Argumentative, Meditative, Beatitude, and Egoism Cognitive Trances followed by Ultra-cognitive trance. First of all, the devotee starts from the gross objects and moves towards the subtle objects and Matter, and then lastly cognizes the Soul in Egoism Cognitive Trance; and then makes GOD his ultimate target and practice for Ultra-cognitive Trance. Seer Patanjali had prescribed various subjects of Sanyama in this chapter and explained the attainments on the basis of such subjects. These attainments are explained from aphorisms 3.16 to 3.52. With the reference to the attainment of "parachitta-GYaanaadiShu" = knowledge of other's mind in the commentary by Seer Vyaasa, the various subjects of attainments are also to be considered as various planes. Now which subject is the lower plane and which is the succeeding plane, this can be known by the proper practice of yoga only. In the same way, Seer Vyaasa had used the word "madhumatim bhuumim" (= plane of madhumati = second class of yogi) in his commentary on aphorisms 3.51 and 3.54. Seer Vyaasa had described four classes of yogis in that aphorism, and these are also the planes of yoga.
Query:- Is Sanyama in all the subjects of attainments necessary for all the devotees? Or, are all these subjects of attainment to be considered as various planes of Yoga, which are required to be achieved?
Solution:- No, it is not so. Attainments achieved by Sanyama on various subjects have no relation with the ultimate target of salvation. (Ref - Seer Vyaasa had clearly said in aphorism 3.55 that "etasyaam avasthaayaam kaivalyam bhavati iishvarasya aniishvarasya vaa vivekaja-GYaana-bhaaginaH itarasya vaa"). Most of the attainments are obstacles to attaining higher planes of yoga and even to the achievement of Trance. (Ref - te samaadhau-upasargaa vyuthaane siddhayaH. 3.37). Hence all these cannot be said as planes of yoga. For the yogi who has cognizance of GOD as his ultimate target, these subjects cannot be said to the various planes of Yoga. For the other yogis, these attainments can be the various planes of yoga, and these can be achieved by proper practice of Sanyama in those subjects. On the other hand, those who have the target of cognizance of GOD, have to start from Argumentative Cognitive Trance and achieve Meditative, Beatitude, and Egoism Cognitive Trances, and thereafter by the practice of Supreme Desirelessness, the practice of Ultra-cognitive Trance is the only path.
Seer Vyaasa said that without achieving the lower planes and leaving the further planes, it is not possible to perform Sanyama in the higher planes. When Sanyama is not performed in a particular plane, then trance-cognition in that subject will be not achieved. But one who had performed yogic practice in the previous birth can achieve Sanyama in the higher planes of yoga, even by little practice, by the bliss of GOD. (Ref - Seer Patanjali had accepted the attainments by birth in aphorism 4.1). Such yogi is not required to perform Sanyama in lower planes. But this rule is applicable in the case of specific devotees only. GOD is very just, and He cannot give fruits to the Souls without their vehicle of actions, merely by His wish. So, the yogi has to proceed in the prescribed sequence only.
Which plane is next to any plane? Or after how much practice one should move to the next plane? Or after which type of attainment in Argumentative Cognitive Trance, the devotee should move to Meditative Cognitive Trance? etc. In order to know this Seer Vyaasa said that in this regard Yoga alone teaches the yogi. By the proper practice of Yoga, GOD helps him to know the next higher stage of yoga. In this way, the yogi even attains the bliss of GOD through the practice of the last stage of Yoga and ultimately achieves salvation.
