Ancient seer Meaning in English : (veditavyaH) It must be understood that by (etena) describing the (puurva-uktena chitta-pariNaamena) suppression, trance and one-pointedness modifications of the mind, (dharma-pariNaamaH) change of characteristics, (lakShana-pariNaamaH) change of secondary qualities (cha) and (avasthaa-pariNaamaH) change of condition (bhuuta-indriyeShu) in the gross objects and organs = instruments of activity and sensation, (dharma-lakShaNa-avasthaa-ruupeNa) which are present in the form of characteristics, secondary quality, and conditions (uktaH) have also been described.
(tatra) There, in the three kinds of changes, (abhibhava-praadurbhaavau) disappearance and appearance of (vyutthaana-nirodhayoH dharmayoH) outgoing and suppression characteristics are (dharma-pariNaamaH) the "modification of characteristics" (dharmiNi) in the characterized object mind. (cha) And (lakShaNa-pariNaamaH) "modification of secondary quality" is explained as — (nirodhaH) suppression has (trilakShaNaH) three secondary qualities i.e., (yuktaH) connected with (tribhiH adhvabhiH) three paths of existence. (saH khalu) That suppression activity (prathamam) first of all (hitvaa) having given up (anaagata-lakShaNam adhvaanam) futuristic state of existence, (anatikraantaH) without giving up (dharmatvam) its characteristics, (pratipannaH) takes up (varttamaana-lakShaNam) the present state of existence; (yatra) where (asya) it is (abhivyaktiH) manifested by (svaruupeNa) its true nature. (eShaH) This present state is (dvitiiyaH adhvaa) the second path of existence of (asya) the suppression activity. (cha) And this present state of suppression characteristic (na) is not (viyuktaH) devoid of (atiita-anaagataabhyaam lakShaNaabhyaam) the past and futuristic qualities.
(tathaa) Similarly (vyutthaanam) the outgoing = worldly activity also has (trilakShaNam) three secondary qualities i.e., (yuktam) connected with (tribhiH adhvabhiH) three paths of existence. This outgoing activity (hitvaa) having given up (varttamaana-lakShaNam) the present state of existence, (anatikraantam) without giving up (dharmatvam) its characteristics, (pratipannam) goes into (atiita-lakShaNam) past state of existence. (eShaH) This past state is (tritiiyaH adhvaa) the third path of existence of (asya) the outgoing activity. (cha) And this past state of outgoing characteristic (na) is not (viyuktam) devoid of (anaagata-varttamaanaabhyaam lakShaNaabhyaam) the futuristic and present qualities. (evam) Similarly, (punaH) again on disturbance of suppression state/activity, (vyutthaanam) outgoing activity, (upasampadyamaanam) while inclining, (hitvaa) having given up (anaagata-lakShaNam) futuristic state of existence, (anatikraantam) without giving up (dharmatvam) its characteristics, (pratipannam) takes up (varttamaana-lakShaNam) the present state of existence; (yatra) where (asya) its (svaruupa-abhivyaktau) true nature is manifested and (vyaapaaraH satyaam) it acts as such. (eShaH) This is (asya) its (dvitiiyaH adhvaa) second path of existence. (cha) And this present state of outgoing = worldly characteristic (na) is not (viyuktam) devoid of (atiita-anaagataabhyaam lakShaNaabhyaam iti) past and futuristic qualities. (evam) Similarly (punaH) again (nirodhaH) suppression activity is manifested and (evam) also (punaH) again (vyutthaanam iti) outgoing activity is manifested.
(tathaa) Similar is (avasthaa-pariNaamaH) the change of condition. (tatra) During (nirodha-kShaNeShu) the period of suppression, (i.e., during the period of ultra-cognitive trance) (nirodha-sa.nskaaraaH) the potencies of suppression (bhavanti) are being (balavantaH) strengthened and (vyutthaana-sa.nskaaraaH) potencies of out-going activities (durbalaaH iti) are being weakened. (eShaH) This is (avasthaa-pariNaamaH) "modification of condition" (dharmaaNaam) of the characteristics of suppression and outgoing activity.
(tatra) In the three types of modifications, (dharmiNaH) the characterized object = mind (pariNaamaH) changes (dharmaiH) by "change of characteristics"; (dharmaaNaam) characteristics (pariNaamaH) change (triH adhvanaam) in three paths of existence (lakShaNaiH) by "change of secondary qualities"; and (lakShaNaanaam) secondary qualities (api) also (pariNaamaH) change (avasthaabhiH iti) by "change of conditions".
(evam) In this way (guNa-vrittam) the functioning of the "Qualities" (na avatiShThate) does not remain (shuunyam) devoid, (kShaNam api) even for a moment, (dharma-lakShaNa-avasthaa-pariNaamaiH) of change of the characteristics, secondary quality, and conditions; (cha) since (guNa-vrittam) the functioning of "Qualities" is (chalam) highly changeable = i.e., remains ceaseless. (uktam) It has been said that (pravritti-kaaraNam) the cause of activity and/or change (guNaanaam) of "Qualities" (tu) is (guNa-svaabhaavyam iti) the very nature of "Qualities". (etena) By the three types of changes/modifications of the mind, (trividhaH) three-fold (pariNaamaH) changes (bhuuta-indriyeShu) in the gross elements and organs of activity and senses, (dharma-dharmi-bhedaat) by the conception of the distinction between the characteristics and characterized, (veditavyaH) must be understood.
(paramaarthatah tu) In reality, however, (ekaH eva) there is only one (pariNaamaH) change, (hi) since (dharmaH) the characteristic is (dharmi-svaruupa-maatraH) very being itself of characterized; and (eShaa) this (dharmi-vikriyaa) change in the characterized (eva) alone (prapa~nchyate) is detailed = shown by (dharma-dvaaraa iti) means of the characteristics. (tatra) In case of modifications in characterized, (dharmasya) the characteristics, which are (varttamaanasya) present in (dharmiNi eva) the characterized object alone, (bhaavaanyathaatvam bhavati) that changes (atiita-anaagata-varttamaaneShu adhvasu) in the states of the past, the present, and the future, (na tu dravyaanyathaatvam) the substance is not changed. (yathaa) Thus when (suvarNa-bhaajanasya) the vessel of gold is (bhittvaa) broken (anyathaa kriyamaaNasya) to be made into something else, then (bhaavaanyathaatvam bhavati) it is a change of condition only, and (na suvarNa-anyathaatvam iti) not change take place in the gold.
In this regard (aparaH) some opponent (aaha) says that — (dharmii) the characterized object is (dharmaanabhyadhikaH) nothing more = not different than the characteristics, since (puurva-tattva-anatikramaat) the earlier object is not transgressed. (yadi anvayii syaat) If it were some objects (anupatitaH) co-existent (puurva-apara-avasthaa-bhedam) in the anterior and posterior conditions, then (kauTasthyena eva parivartteta iti) it would change as an independent object, i.e., it will not remain as eternal. (ayam) This is (adoShaH) not a defect in our principle. (kasmaat) Why? Since (ekaantaanabhyupagamaat) constancy is not accepted in the gross objects and organs of the Soul. (tat etat trailokyam) so, the objects in the three worlds (vyakteH apaiti) give up their individual appearance i.e., they get modified as per characteristics. (kasmaat) Why? Since (nityatva-pratiShedhaat) eternity has not been accepted for these objects. (apetam api asti) Yet they exist in case of disappearance also, because (vinaasha-pratiShedhaat) their ultimate destruction has been denied. (cha) And (asya) these worldly objects (saukShmyam) become subtle (sa.nsargaat) due to conjunctive existence i.e., becoming latent = merged in their material cause; (cha) and (anupalabdhiH) they are not perceived (saukShmyaat iti) on account of their subtlety.
(dharmaH) The characteristic of (lakShaNa-pariNaamaH) change of secondary quality, (varttamaanaH adhvasu) while being in the present path of existence, (atiitaH) moves to the past path, then this change (atiita-lakShaNa-yuktaH) with the past secondary quality (aviyuktaH) is not devoid of (anaagata-varttamaanaabhyaam lakShaNaabhyaam) future and present secondary qualities. (tathaa) Similarly, (anaagataH) the futuristic characteristics (anaagata-lakShaNa-yuktaH) joined with the future secondary quality, (aviyuktaH) is not devoid of (varttamaana-atiitaabhyaam lakShaNaabhyaam) present and past secondary qualities. (tathaa) similarly, (varttamaanaH) present characteristics (varttamaana-lakShaNa-yuktaH) joined with the present secondary quality (aviyuktaH) is not devoid of (atiita-anaagataabhyaam lakShaNaabhyaam iti) past and future secondary qualities. (yathaa) For example, (puruShaH) a man (raktaH) attached to (ekasyaam striyaam) a woman, then (na bhavati) does not become (viraktaH) attachment less (sheShaasu iti) to all other women.
(paraiH) Others (doShaH chodyate iti) find a fault in this change of secondary quality by saying — (atra lakShaNa-pariNaame) In the change of secondary quality, since (sarvasya) all the characteristics (sarva-lakShaNa-yogaat) have all the (past, present, and future) qualities simultaneously, so, (adhva-sa~NkaraH praapnoti iti) their path of existence must be overlapping and hence confused. (tasya) The above-mentioned defect (parihaaraH) is resolved by saying that — (dharmatvam) the properties = existence (dharmaaNaam) of the characteristics (aprasaadhyam) requires no proof (Since the same is established principle.) (sati cha dharmatve) On being establishment of the characteristics, their (lakShaNa-bhedaH api) secondary qualities also (vaachyaH) must be posited. (na) It is not (varttamaana-samaye eva) on in the present time when (asya dharmatvam) the properties of characteristics exist. (hi) If (evam) the principle of existence of present characteristics only is accepted then (krodha-kaale) at the time of anger, (asamu-daachaaraat) as non-manifestation (raagasya) of attachment at that time, (chittam) the mind (na syaat) would not possess (raaga-dharmakam iti) the characteristics of attachment in future. (kim cha) Is it so? (vyaktau) Manifestation of (trayaaNaam lakShaNaanaam) three secondary qualities (na asti) is not (sambhavaH) possible (ekasyaam) in one individual (yugapat) simultaneously. (bhaavaH bhavet tu) They may, however, appear (krameNa) in succession (svavya~njakaa~njanasya iti) by virtue of the operation of their several causes. (uktam cha) And so, it has been said — "(ruupa-atishayaaH) Intensities of natures i.e., virtue, knowledge, desirelessness, powerfulness or vice, ignorance, desire-full-ness and supine-ness (cha) and (vritti-atishayaaH) intensities of modifications of quietness, disturbed or delusion, etc. (virudhyante) are opposed (paraspareNa) to each other; (tu) but (saamaanyaani) ordinary position of these (pravarttante) manifestation (saha) co-exists (atishayaiH) with the intense ones." (tasmaat) Therefore, (asa~NkaraH) there is no overlapping, no confusion. (yathaa) For example, (raagasya eva) as the attachment (samudaachaaraH) being in the height of manifestation (kvachit iti) with reference to some object and/or person, (tadaaniim) then at that time it cannot be said that (abhaavaH na) there is no attachment (anyatra) towards other objects and/or persons; (kintu) on the contrary, it is (kevalam saamaanyena) there ordinarily (samanvaagataH) in the other objects, (iti) so, (tadaa) at that time (tasya) attachment (bhaavaH asti) exists (tatra) for other objects and persons. (tathaa) Similarly (lakShaNasya iti) existence of secondary qualities is to be understood.
(na) It is not (dharmii) the characterized object in the form of elements and organs (tryadhvaa) that is possessed of the three paths of existence; (tu) but (dharmaaH) its characteristics have (tri adhvaanaH) three paths. (te) These characteristics are either (lakShitaaH) manifested = visible i.e., in the present state of existence; or (alakshitaaH) non-manifested = latent i.e., in the past or future state of existence. (tatra) Of these (lakShitaaH) manifested characteristics (praapnuvantaH) by taking (taam taam avasthaam) different conditions, (prati-nirdishyante) are termed (anyatvena) differently (avasthaantarataH) according to the condition taken by it (na) not (dravyaantarataH) by the difference of the substance = object (i.e., characterized object does not get changed). (yathaa) For example, (ekaa rekhaa) the number 1 means (shatam) hundred (shatasthaane) in the place of hundred, (dasham) ten (dasha-sthaane) in the place of ten, (cha) and (ekam) one (ekasthaane) in the place of one. (cha) And (yathaa) similarly (strii) a woman (ekatve api) although one, (maataa cha uchyate) is called as a mother, (duhitaa cha) a daughter (svasaa cha iti) and a sister by different persons.
(kaishchit) Some opponent (uktaH) says that (avasthaa-pariNaame) the theory of change of conditions (kauTsthya-prasa~NgadoShaH) is defective as rendering eternal existence necessary. (katham) How? (vyavahitatvaat) The change in (adhvanaH) three paths of existence is (vyaapaareNa) by operation. (yadaa) When (dharmaH) characteristic (na) is not (karoti) performing (sva-vyaapaaram) its functions (tadaa) then it is called (anaagataH) future; (yadaa) when (karoti) operating (tadaa) then it is (varttamaanaH) called present; and (yadaa) when (nivrittaH) it ceases (kritvaa) after operating (tadaa) then (atiitaH iti) it is called past. Now (paraiH) the opponents (uchyate) say that (doShaH iti) it is a defect that (evam) in this way (kauTasthyam) the defect of eternal/independent existence of (lakShaNaanaam) the secondary qualities (cha) and (avasthaanaam) conditions of (dharma-dharmiNoH) the characteristics and the characterized objects, (praapnoti) is inferred.
(asau) This is (na) not (doShaH) defect. (kasmaat) Why? (vaichitryaat) On account of a variety of (vimarda) disappearance and/or change of (guNaanaam) characteristics/qualities, (guNi-nityatve api) even though the characterized object independently exists, the defect as above, cannot be inferred. (yathaa) As (avinaashinaam shabdaadii-naam guNaanaam) indestructible characterized objects in the form of subtle elements, such as sound, etc. have (vinaashi) destructible (aadimat dharma-maatram sa.nsthaanam) characteristics (i.e., results) in the form of ether, air, fire, water, and earth which are caused as gross objects; (evam) similarly (vinaashi) destructible (aadimat dharma-maatram li~Ngam) mahatattva = "Great Principle of Pure Be-ness", the first work product, is characteristic of (avinaashinaam sattvaadiinaam guNaanaam) indestructible "Qualities" named as Matter. (tasmin) This change of form is (vikaara-sanj~naa iti) named as "Product".
(tatra) In this context (idam) this is (udaaharaNam) an illustration — (mrit dharmii) earth (= dirt) as an object, (piNDaa-kaaraat dharmaat) from characteristic in the form of sod, (upasampadyamaanaN) taking up (dharmaantaram) another characteristic (pariNamate) becomes (ghaTaakaaraH) in the form of "Jar" (dharmataH iti) by characteristics only. (ghaTaakaaraH) This "Jar" (hitvaa) by giving up (anaagatam lakShaNam) future secondary quality (pratipadyate) comes to possess (varttamaana-lakShaNam) the present secondary quality manifested in the present; (iti) thus (pariNamate) changes (lakShaNataH) by secondary quality. (ghaTaH) The same "Jar" (anubhavan) experiencing = showing (nava-puraaNataam) newness and oldness (pratikShaNam) every moment (i.e., becoming old every moment as compared to the previous moment) (pratipadyate) possess (avasthaa-pariNaamam iti) change of condition.
(dharmaantaram) Taking up of another form, (dharmiNaH) by characterized object = substratum (api) also (avasthaa) is a position; (api) also (lakShaNaantaram) having different secondary quality (dharmasya) of a characteristic is (avasthaa iti) a position of characteristic. (ataH) It is, therefore, (ekaH dravya-pariNaamaH) change of one substratum = object (eva) alone (upadarshitaH) is shown (bhedena iti) by differentiation i.e., by change of characteristics, secondary quality, and condition. (evam) In this way, three changes (yojyam) are to be applied to (padaarthaantareShu api iti) other objects i.e., gross elements and organs also.
(te ete) These (dharma-lakShaNa-avasthaa-pariNaamaaH) changes of characteristics, secondary quality, and condition (anatikraantaaH) do not overstep (dharmi-svaruupam) the being = form of the characterized object, (iti) it is for this reason that (ekaH eva pariNaamaH) the one change alone (abhiplavate) runs through (sarvaan amuun) all these (visheShaan) specializations.
(atha) Now (kaH) what is (ayam) this (pariNaamaH) change? (pariNaamaH) Change is (utpattiH) manifestation of (dharmaantaraH) another characteristic (puurva-dharma-nivrittau) on removal = cessation of previous characteristic (dravyasya) of a material object (avasthitasya) which is existing and remain constant.
Vedic Commentary in English : Trance, one-pointed, and suppression modifications take place in the mind. In the same way characteristic, secondary quality, and condition changes take place in gross objects and organs (sense as well as work), which are the last products in the creation process of the universe. Whereas material changes also take place in the universal products before these i.e., in subtle elements, Egoism, and Pure-beness. But in these 16 objects i.e., gross objects and organs, there are no further material changes; only characteristic, secondary quality, and condition changes take place. Trance, one-pointed, and suppression modifications are related to the mind alone; but characteristic, secondary quality, and condition changes are related to all these 16 objects. So, it is to be understood that characteristic, secondary quality and condition changes also take place in the trance, one-pointed and suppression modifications of the mind.
What is a change? Seer Vyaasa replied that the manifestation of another characteristic on the removal of the previous characteristic, in an existing material object, is known as change. As in the case of the earth, the manifestation of lump-characteristic from dirt-characteristic; a manifestation of jar-characteristic from lump-characteristic; manifestation of half-jar-characteristic from jar-characteristic; and again, a manifestation of dirt-characteristic from half-jar-characteristic are the characteristic changes of existing characterized object earth. In all these changes earth, as a characterized object, is present. These all changes show the different forms of the earth only. In fact, there is one change which is known as characteristic change. When this change is explained in terms of time, it is said as a secondary quality change which is known as the past, present, and future state of existence. The same change is explained in terms of oldness and newness it is known as condition change. So, when the lump characteristic of the earth was the present state, then the jar was in the futuristic state; when the jar came into existence, then this is the present-state secondary quality change; when this jar is broken into pieces, then the jar is in the past-state. The same jar when comes into manifestation, then every moment it becomes old as compared to the previous moment, and this is the condition change of the jar. Here there is no other change as characteristic change, as when the jar is manifested from the lump of the earth; but there are changes in terms of secondary quality with respect to time, and condition changes with respect to oldness and newness. Hence one characteristic change has been said in different forms. Seer Vyaasa clearly said that the manifestation of another characteristic in place of a previous characteristic is a change, and having different secondary qualities of that characteristic is the state of that characteristic. So, by characteristic, secondary quality, and condition changes, the change of one characterized object is shown in different forms.
Characteristic, secondary quality, and condition changes in the trance, one-pointed, and suppression modifications of the mind are explained in detail. These are to be understood as below:-
1. In the restrained mind, the disappearance of worldly potencies and the appearance of restrained potencies is the characteristic change. In the same way in the trance modification of the mind, cessation of all-pointedness and manifestation of one-pointedness is the characteristic change.
2. Secondary quality change in the mind is to be understood in the following way —
- Till the suppression potencies are not manifested and worldly potencies are active, during that period suppression potencies are in the futuristic state and worldly potencies are in the present state. When the suppression potencies are manifested, then it is the manifestation of suppression potencies in the present-state from the futuristic state of existence; and with the disappearance of worldly potencies, it is moving of worldly potencies in the past-state from the present-state of existence. The suppression potencies even while coming into the present state of existence from the futuristic-state, neither give up their suppression characteristics nor are devoid of past and futuristic qualities. The same is to be understood in the case of worldly potencies.
Now when the suppression trance is ceased, then suppression potencies disappear and worldly potencies get manifested. The disappearance of suppression potencies is the moving of suppression potencies to the past-state from the present-state of existence; and the manifestation of worldly potencies is the manifestation of the present-state from the futuristic state of existence. In this way, these suppression and worldly characteristics, without giving up their own characteristics, existing in any state of existence, are never devoid of other two states of existence. In this way manifestation of suppression characteristics and disappearance of worldly characteristics; and again, the appearance of worldly characteristics and disappearance of suppression characteristics; this sequence continues.
3. During the suppression trance, suppression potencies get strengthened in the mind, and worldly potencies are weakened; this is the condition change of suppression and worldly characteristics. In this way, in other states also, the strengthening of one characteristic and the weakening of other characteristics is known as condition change.
Seer Vyaasa had said that modifications of Qualities of Illumination, Energy, and Inertia are changeable, their functioning never remains without the characteristic, secondary quality, and condition changes. So, these changes continuously take place in gross objects and organs. But by such changes, the form of a characterized object never changes; as by making different objects = parts from the gold, no change takes place in the form of gold, similarly by the three types of changes the original form of gross objects and organs does not change.
In this regard, it is to be understood that a characterized object always remains present in the characteristics, and all characteristics = properties exist on the basis of a characterized object only (Ref - dravyaashraya-guNavaan sa.nyog-vibhageShu-akaaraNam-anapekSha iti guNalakShaNam. VaisheShika Philosophy 1.1.16). On the non-availability of Subtle objects by the sense-organs, one doubts the existence of subtle objects. As if somebody says that there is no separately existing object as "power of sight", but the characteristic of seeing alone is "power of sight", and till one is able to see, the existence of "power of sight" is proved; and if there is no visibility, there is no such object. (Here the fact is to be understood that the subtle organ "power of sight" works through the physical eye-ball, if the physical eye-ball is defective, then one is not able to see; and once the defects of the physical eye-ball are removed by surgery, etc. then once again becomes able to see the object. So, the "power of sight" is different from the physical eyeball. So, accepting the characteristic of "seeing = visibility" as an object = characterized sense organ known as "power of sight", is nescience.) In the same way, one has nescience regarding other objects like the Soul and GOD.
Here some opponents say that there is no characterized object distinct from characteristics; since by accepting such conception, by having characteristic change the form of the characterized object will automatically change and it will not remain eternal. In order to resolve this suspicion Seer Vyaasa said that in the scriptures gross objects and organs are not accepted as eternal as of Soul. On their destruction, these become devoid of manifestation; and on their latency in their respective causes, they become subtle, and in this way, subtle objects are not available. In fact, these never get destroyed; they are not perceived while existing in their material cause and become available for perception on manifestation. So, it is to be understood that a characterized object is not a combination of characteristics only, on the other hand materially existing object is known by its characteristics.
The characteristic, in terms of secondary quality, is always with three stages of existence but is available for perception in the present stage of existence. If this is not so, when one person has an attachment toward a particular woman in the present, and attachment is not being manifested toward other women in the present, then it cannot be said that that person will not have an attachment toward any other woman in the future or he was not having attachment towards any woman in the past. Here it is to be accepted that his attachment towards other women is either in the future stage or was in the past stage of existence. So, the characteristic of attachment present in the mind is with the three stages, it is in the present stage of existence towards someone, the past stage of existence towards some other, and the future-stage of existence towards someone else. On the suspicion that "There will be an overlapping defect if all the three stages exist simultaneously in the characteristic", Seer Vyaasa said that properties of characteristics are not fixed to present-time only. If the present stage of properties is only accepted, then non-manifestation of attachment during the time of anger, the attachment should never be there in the mind of a person, and such person should always be in the mode of anger, but this is not possible. All three stages of characteristic cannot manifest simultaneously but can take place in sequence only. It has been said that intensities of nature and intensities of modifications are opposed to each other i.e., two opposite types of modifications cannot dominate in the mind at one time; but during the dominance of one, others exist as ordinary (= weak) ones. (Ref - detailed explanation on this subject is in our commentary on 2.15). So, there is no overlapping of the three stages of existence. In this way, even by manifestation of different characteristics, there is no change in the characterized object. In this regard, an example is given that one woman is a mother for her son, a daughter for her father, a sister for her brother, and a wife for her husband, but there is no change in the woman.
In this way, with regard to the solution to the defect of eternity, in the case of condition change, it is to be understood that in fact, condition change is not a separate or independent change, where there are different stages of characteristics that exist. As the characterized object earth = dust, first exists in the form of a lump, and then the jar is made from it; this is the characteristic change. This jar came into the present stage of existence after leaving the past-stage of existence; this is the secondary quality change. Now, this jar becomes old every moment, as compared to its previous moment; this is a condition change. In this way, one change is shown in the form of characteristic, secondary-quality, and condition changes.
These characteristic, secondary-quality, and condition changes are to be known as taking place in gross objects and organs. These changes do not destroy the form of an object but exist in the characterized object only.
