Ancient seer Meaning in English : (dharmaH) Characteristic is (shaktiH) the power (dharmiNaH) of an object (eva) alone (yogyataa-avachchhinnaa) differentiated by fitness. (cha) And (saH) that characteristic, (phala-prasava-bhedaanumita) inferred by the product of specific results, (sadbhaavaH ekasya) of an existing object (paridriShTaH) is seen (anyaH anyaH cha) differently. (tatra) Out of different virtual characteristics (varttamaanaH dharmaH) the present characteristic is (sva-vyaapaaram-anubhavan) experiencing its operations = showing itself in operation, (bhidyate) differentiated (dharmaantrebhyaH) from other characteristics (shaantebhyaH cha) which have become latent and (avyapadeshyebhyaH cha) those which are unpredictable yet. (yadaa tu) When, however, the present characteristic (saamaanyena samanvaagataH bhavati) remains manifested with the generic quality of an object, (tadaa) then (dharmi-svaruupa-maatratvaat) on being the very nature of the object alone, (kaH asau) what is this characteristic and (kena bhidyeta) from whom to be differentiated? (i.e., at that time characteristic and characterized objects were treated as one.)
(tatra) Now (ye khalu dharmiNaH) these characteristics (dharmaaH) of an object are (shaantaa uditaa avyapadeshyaaH cha iti) either latent, rising, or unpredictable. (tatra) Out of these (ye) the characteristics (vyaapaaraan kritvaa) which have done its operation, and (uparataaH) ceased are (shaantaaH) latent. (uditaaH) The rising characteristics are (savyaapaaraaH) those that are in operation. (cha) And (te) those rising characteristics are (samanantaraaH) immediate post-cedents (= taking place afterward) of (anaagatasya lakShaNasya) the future = non-manifested characteristics. And (atiitaaH) the characteristics, which became latent, are (anantaraaH) the post-cedents (vartamaanasya) of the present characteristics. (kim artham) Why (na bhavanti) are not (varttamaanaaH) the present characteristics (anantaraaH) immediate consequents (atiitasya) of the past ones? It is replied as (abhaavaat) on account of the absence of (puurva-pashchimataayaaH) the relation of antecedence and postcedence between the past and present characteristics. (yathaa) As (puurva-pashchimataa) the relation of antecedence and postcedence exists (anaagata-varttamaanayoH) between the present and the future characteristics, (evam) the same relation (na) is not between it and (atiitasya) the past one. (tasmaat) Therefore (na asti) there is no (samanantaraH) immediate postcedence (atiitasya) of the past characteristic. (tat) That (anaagata eva) future characteristic alone (bhavati) is (samanantaraH) immediate antecedent (varttamaanasya iti) of the present characteristic.
(atha) Now (ke) what are (avyapadeshyaaH) unpredictable characteristics? (sarvam) All objects (sarvaatmakam iti) possess all their own powers = virtues. (yatra uktam) In this regard it has been said — "(rasaadi-vaishva-ruupyam) The variety of all kinds of juices (paariNaamikam) which are products = changes of (jala-bhuumyoH) water and earth, (driShTam) is seen (sthaavareShu) in the stationary objects i.e., trees, plants, flowers, etc. (tathaa) Similarly (sthaavaraaNaam) workable changes of stationary trees, plants, etc. (ja~NgameShu) in the bodies of self-moving i.e., men, animals, and birds, etc., and (ja~Ngamaanaam) of the self-moving (sthaavareShu iti) in the stationary ones." (evam) Thus (jaatyanuchchhedena) on account of the non-destruction of spices, (sarvam) all objects (sarvaatmakam iti) contain all the powers. But (abhivyaktiH) manifestation of (aatmanaam) all these powers = natures of the objects (na khalu) do not take place (samaana-kaalam) simultaneously (desha-kaala-aakaara-nimitta-apabandhaat iti) on account of the limitation of space, time, form, and disposing cause.
(anvayii) The substratum (yaH) which (anupaatii) remains common (eteShu) to all these (abhivyakta-anabhivyakteShu) manifested = the present and non-manifested = future and past (dharmeShu) characteristics, and (saamaanya-visheShaatmaa) is of both the generic and specific nature, (saH) that is called (dharmii) the characterized object.
(yasya tu) In the case of one, however, who believes that (idam) this object (dharma-maatram eva) is a characteristic only and (niranvayam) without a substratum, (tasya) to him (bhoga-abhaavaH) there is an absence of experience. (kasmaat) Why? (katham) How (adhikriyeta) is it possible to accept that (anyat) another mind/person as (bhoktritven) enjoyer of (kritasya karmaNaH) the acts performed (anyena vij~naanena) by another mind/person? (cha) And (na anyasya asti) no one can (smaraNam) remember (anya driShTasya) the object seen by others, so, (tat smrityabhaavaH iti) there would be no memory for a mind existing for a particular moment only. (cha) And (vastu-pratyabhij~naanaat) since the objects are called back to memory and recognized as such, (anvayii dharmii) the substratum common to the changing states (sthitaH) exists, (yaH) which is (pratyabhij~naayate) identified as such (dharmaanyathaatvam abhyupagataH) even when it takes up a different characteristic. (tasmaat) Therefore, (idam) this characterized object is (na) not (niranvayam) devoid of relation to all characteristics and (dharma-maatram iti) a mere characteristic only.
Vedic Commentary in English : The characteristics = properties of any object are based on that object alone, and these exist in that characterized object without violating the form of the object. The gross objects, cognizable by organs, are perceived by the common persons, but subtle objects are perceived = experienced by their characteristics. The knowledge of the subtle characterized object, by the experience of its characteristics, does not result in the experience of its gross existence since the gross existence ( = perceivable by the organs) of such objects is not there. As on having the knowledge of Soul, by the knowledge of characteristics of Soul, even the yogi with a good level of yoga practice cannot cognize the conscious Soul, even though he has the verbal knowledge of the Soul, then what to speak about the common man? In the same way, it is to be understood with regard to the subtle objects of Matter i.e., from the conception of Pure-beness to the Sky. So, Seer Patanjali said that a characterized object is always existing for its characteristics.
While explaining the characteristics and characterized object it has been said that the power of an object differentiated by fitness is its characteristic. The object is known by the operation of its present = rising characteristics. At this time, there is no difference between the object and the characteristic. The rising = present characteristics of an object are different from the latent and unpredictable characteristics.
Latent characteristics are those that have ceased after their operations. Those which are in operation and are available, are the present = rising characteristics. The present characteristics are immediate post-cedents of the future = non-manifested characteristics. In the same way, latent characteristics are post-cedents of the present characteristics. But the present = rising characteristics are not post-cedents of the latent characteristics, since the relationship of antecedence and postcedence does not exist between the present and past characteristics. As a jar gets manifested from the lump of clay, but it cannot get manifested from the pieces of a jar; on the other hand, a powder of clay is formed from those pieces. On the manifestation of pieces, the jar had become the latent characteristic, and there is no other characteristic of that jar. Now the piece is the present characteristic. So, there is no immediate postcedence of the past characteristics. So, the future characteristic is the immediate antecedent of the present characteristic.
Now, what are the future = unpredictable characteristics? All the powers of an object are its future characteristics, and whichever gets manifested that is called a present characteristic. Hence future characteristics of an object are not said with certainty, as is done in the case of present and latent characteristics. In this regard, an example has been given — "The variety of all kinds of juices which are products = changes of water and earth is seen in the stationary objects i.e., trees, plants, flowers, etc." From these trees, plants — foods and medicines get generated which results in the sperm in the living beings, and from the sperm physical bodies of men, animals, and birds get generated; and the stool, of these living beings, becomes the fertilizer for the trees, plants, etc. and ultimately various results of dead-bodies of the self-moving, supports the stationary objects. This has been said by Seer Vyaasa as — "Workable changes of stationary trees, plants, etc. in the bodies of self-moving i.e., men, animals, and birds, etc., and of the self-moving in the stationary ones. Thus, on account of non-destruction of spices, all objects contain all the powers." It has to be understood here that by the destruction of any tree that is stationary, and the physical body of living beings, the species do not get destroyed; since the same type of trees and physical bodies are available in other places.
Seer Vyaasa had used the words "sarvam sarvaatmakam" and it had been explained by various commentators as "all objects include all powers, which means that all these powers are able to produce = create all types of changes." But it is not possible for everything to get manifested from all objects. In this regard, Seer Kanada said—
dravya-guNayoH sajaatiiyaarambhakatvam saadharmyam.
dravyaaNi dravyaantaramaarabhante guNaaH cha guNaantaram.
VaisheShika-philosophy 1.1.9-10.
It means that the creation of a similar type of spices from an object and quality = property is their common characteristic; as only various types of earthly products are generated from the earth, and products of different spices cannot be generated from it. The other object is generated from an object, and a different quality is being generated from a quality. From earth, other objects of the earth; from water, other objects of water; and from fire, other objects of fire can be generated, and such generation is of the same spice only. It is not possible to generate the objects of water from the earth, fire, air, etc; and the same is to be understood with regard to objects of other species.
In the same way, Seer Kapila had said in Saankhya Philosophy—
na-asat-utpaado nrishri.ngvat. .1.
upaadaana-niyamaat. .2.
sarvatra sarvadaa sarva-asambhavaat. .3.
shaktasya shakya-kaaraNam. .4. Saankhya Philosophy 1.114-117.
A non-existent cannot be generated, just like a human horn. An existent object alone is manifested, nor a non-existent. (1) On account of the rule of material cause, a non-existent can never get generated. Whatever product gets manifested = generated, that is generated by the rule of material-cause, i.e., just as is the nature of material-cause, so, is the nature of a manifested object, i.e., a jar from the earth, cloth from the cotton thread, etc. (2). Since everything does not get manifested, at all places and at all time. If the rule of material cause is not there, then everything should get generated at all times and in all places, but this does not happen. (3). Since possible-one is performed by the abled-one, as that is already existing in the abled-one, and that already existing possible-one gets manifested, so, non-existent does not get generated. (4).
From the above, it is clear that any object includes its all powers = characteristics, not all the powers. So, all powers of an object are its characteristics, and this is the proper meaning of "sarvam sarvaatmakam."
All the unpredictable future characteristics, of any object, do not get manifested at one time. For the manifestation of any characteristic, some causes are prescribed—
1. Place — Some characteristics, though existing as non-manifested in the object, get manifested in a favorable place. As saffron gets produced in cold places like Kashmir, not in the other hot places, though the power of production of saffron exists in its every seed.
2. Time — Some characteristics get manifested in a particular time only, as watermelons get produced during the summertime only.
3. Form — Different bodies are formed, from gross objects, in the shape which is subject to limits of the species of living beings, such as bodies of ants, deer, elephants, man, etc. In the same way, the shape of material things, which are formed by the human being, is fixed by the human being as per their needs and utilization. So, the form of the things is controlled by some conscious instrumental cause (= GOD, human being). Even after such restrictions, the original form of the object does not get changed.
4. Disposing Cause — Disposing causes are also one of the causes for the manifestation of characteristics of an object. As in the case of the manifestation of Jar, even after the lump of earth is ready, - the stick, the potter's wheel, and the fire are the normal disposing causes that are necessary for the manifestation of a jar from the lump. If all these or one of these is not present, then the jar cannot be manifested properly.
So even after non-manifestation on account of various causes, all the possible powers of the object, are its future characteristics; and remain included in the object.
At the end of the commentary on the aphorism, Seer Vyaasa criticized the conception of momentarily that there is no existent object as such, on the following grounds —
1. If objects like the Soul and mind are non-existent, then the conception of fruition of action will not exist. How the fruits of the acts of one person can be experienced by the other person?
2. As one cannot remember the things seen by the other, then in the absence of an eternal Soul and existent mind, the conception of memory cannot be there. But on account of the existence of a memory of previously experienced, heard, or seen objects, it is to be accepted that one existent mind is there who had earlier seen, or experienced the object and now is having memory of that. So, an object different from the characteristics exists.
