Ancient seer Meaning in English : (prasakte) On the view = argument that (ekasya dharmiNaH) one substratum = object (eka eva pariNaamaH) should have one type of change only, (iti) it is said that (kramaanyatvam) the distinctness of succession (hetuH bhavati) is the cause of (pariNaamaanyatve iti) distinctness of change. (tad yathaa) That is as — (churNa-mrit) the clay as powder, (piNDa-mrit) the clay kneaded into a lump, (ghaTamrit) the clay appearing as a jar, (kapaala-mrit) the clay as a half-jar, (cha) and (kaNamrit) the clay appearing as a potsherd, (iti kramaH) is the succession = sequence of activity for the clay.
(yaH dharmaH) The characteristic, which (samanantaraH) comes immediately (yasya dharmasya) after a characteristic, (saH) that characteristic (kramaH) is the succession (tasya) of the previous characteristic. (piNDaH prachyavate) The kneaded lump of clay disappears and (ghaTaH upajaayate) the jar appears (iti) this order of succession is called (dharma-pariNaama-kramaH) sequence of the change of characteristics.
(lakShaNa-pariNaama-kramaH) The sequence of change of secondary quality is — (varttamaanabhaavaH) upcoming of the present state (ghaTasya) of a jar (anaagata-bhaavaat) from the un-manifested state of existence (kramaH) is the sequence. (tathaa) Similarly (atiita-bhaavaH) passing into the past state (piNDasya) of the kneaded lump of clay (varttamaana-bhaavaat) from the present state of existence (kramaH) is the sequence. (na asti) There is no (kramaH) succession (atiitasya) for the past. (kasmaat) Why? Because (samanantaratvam) immediate sequence exists only (puurva-parataayaam satyaam) where there is a relation of antecedence and postcedence. (saa tu) And that relation (na asti) does not exist (atiitasya) in the case of the past. (tasmaat) Therefore (kramaH) the succession exists (dvayoH eva lakShaNayoH) in case of two = present and future secondary qualities only.
(tathaa) Similarly, (avasthaa-pariNaama-kramaH api) succession in case of a change of condition is also to be known. As (puraaNataa) oldness (drishyate) is seen in (abhinavasya ghaTasya) a new jar (praante) after its appearance. (saa cha) And that oldness (abhivyajyamaanaa) is manifested (krameNa) in succession (kShaNa-prampara-anupaatinaa) which follows the sequence of moments of time until it (aapadyate) reaches (paraam vyaktim) the last stage of that object. (iti) In this way (ayam) this (tritiiyaH pariNaamaH) third change (= change of condition) (vishiShTaH) is distinct from (dharma-lakShaNaa-bhyaam cha iti) the change of characteristic, and change of secondary quality.
(te ete) All these (kramaaH) three types of succession (pratilabdhasvaruupaaH) find their existence (dharma-dharmi-bhede-sati) till the existence of a distinction between the characteristic and characterized object. (dharmaH api) Characteristic also (bhavati) becomes (dharmii) characterized object (anya-dharma-svaruupa-apekShayaa iti) on account of its relation to the nature of another characteristic.
(yadaa tu) When, however, (saH eva) the characterized object alone, (parmaarthataH) what it really is, (abheda-upachaaradvaareNa) on account of non-distinctness of characteristic (dharmiNiH) in the characterized object, (abhidhiiyate) is described as (dharmaH) characteristic, (tadaa) then (ayam kramaH) this succession (pratyava-bhaasate) appears (ekatvena aiva) to be one only.
Now the characteristics of the mind are explained — (chittasya dharmaaH) The characteristics of the mind (dvaye) are two-fold — (paridriShTaaH cha) visible and (aparidriShTaaH cha) invisible. (tatra) Of these (pratyayaatmakaaH) the modifications appearing as a notion by way of real cognition etc. are (paridriShTaaH) visible characteristics. (aparidriShTaaH) The invisible characteristics are (vastu-maatraatmakaaH) those which exist as the form of substance = mind only. (cha) And (te) they (bhavanti) are (sapta eva) seven only and (praapita-vastu-maatra-sadbhaavaaH) their existence as a substance is being established (anumaanena) by inference. (nirodha-dharma-sa.nskaaraaH) Suppression, characterization, potentization, (pariNaamaH) constant change, (atha) and after that (jiivanam) power of life, (cheShTaa) effort (cha) and (shaktiH) power are (darshana-varjitaaH) non-visible (dharmaaH) characteristics (chittasya iti) of the mind.
Vedic Commentary in English : It has been said that there should be only one type change for any substratum = object since the rising characteristic of any object is certainly one only; in such a situation all the object = substratum should have a certain = specific change which is known as characteristic change. But in this world, we see many types of changes for a particular object, and the cause for such different types of changes is the distinctness of succession. Seer Patanjali said that the difference in succession is the cause of the difference in change. In the explanation to the last aphorism, it had been clarified that future characteristics of an object are not said with certainty, like the rising = present characteristic; and since there can be various possible future characteristics of an object, so, different types of present characteristics are possible for an object. For a change of any future characteristic into a present characteristic, the main cause is a distinct type of succession. As clay is in the form of dust, in the initial stage; then water is mixed with it to make it a lump of mud; from that lump of mud, the jar is made by the potter; on breaking down of that jar, pieces remain there; and in the last again dust gets formed from those pieces; this the sequence of various changes of earth-dust.
What is succession? The characteristic, which comes immediately after a characteristic, is the sequence of the previous characteristic. As a jar is the sequence of a lump of mud, the jar gets manifested from that lump of mud. This succession is termed the characteristic change.
On the manifestation of a jar, the jar comes in the present state of existence from the future state of existence; and on breakage of that jar in the present state, it moves into the past state of existence; it is the succession of change of secondary quality. There is no succession for the past state of existence since there is no state after the past state of existence. Hence only future and present secondary qualities have succession.
On the manifestation of a jar, the jar is new and with the passing of moments it becomes old as compared to previous moments; and after a time gap, it is called as old; and in the last on breakage, it is available in the form of pieces only. The oldness in the jar as compared to newness is the succession of condition change.
These three types of succession find their existence till the existence of a distinction between the characteristic and characterized object. It is to be understood here that an object, which is known as an object with reference to a characteristic, is also characteristic for its precedent. Ultimately there remains only one material object which is known as Matter. As the earth is an object with reference to jar characteristic; this earth is characteristic of the object known as "odoriferous ether"; this "odoriferous ether" is characteristic of the object known as elements of pure Egoism; and in this sequence, element of pure Egoism is characteristic of the object known as an element of Pure-beness; and this is also a characteristic of root material cause known as Matter. Matter is the root object which is not a characteristic of any other object = substratum. This relationship is to be understood with regard to other objects-characteristics. In this way, succession is said while taking the distinction between the characteristic and characterized object. If there is no distinction between the object and the characteristic, then there will be no succession.
Seer Vyaasa had prescribed two types of characteristics of the mind — visible and invisible characteristics. Five types of modifications of perceptions = real cognition etc. are the visible characteristics of the mind, on the other hand, there are seven types of invisible characteristics of the mind, which are known by inference —
1. Suppression — In the Ultra-cognitive Trance, suppression of worldly potencies and appearance of restrained potencies is known as a suppressive modification. In this state, potencies alone exist. This is the suppression characteristic of the mind.
2. Characterization — Virtue-vice acts performed by the mind, words, and body, remain accumulated in the mind in the form of virtue and vice. These virtues and vice are invisible characteristics.
3. Potentialization — Residual potencies are the potencies generated in the mind by the afflictions, acts, and their fruition. These potencies in the mind exist in the dormant, tenuous, alternated, or fully operative state.
4. Constant change — Due to the Qualities of Illumination, Energy, and Inertia, there is constant change in the mind. At a particular time, one Quality dominates, and the other two remain as secondary ones. The modifications and external behavior of the mind are influenced by the dominating Quality of the mind.
5. Power of life — The effort of the mind to hold the body, is the power of life.
6. Effort — The movement of the mind to keep the organs inclined toward their respective objects = subjects, is the effort of the mind. If there is no effort in the mind, then organs will not be able to grasp their subjects = objects.
7. Power — The mind has a subtle power to perform its functions. This capability is known as the power characteristic.
