Ancient seer Meaning in English : (tatra) Now (vaak) the power of speech (arthavatii) fulfills its function (varNeShu eva) in the manifestation of literal sounds (= individual alphabets) only. (cha) And (shrotram) auditory power (dhvani-pariNaama-maatra-viShayam) subjects the literal sounds, uttered by the power of speech, only (i.e., by hearing only the literal sounds do not become meaningful). (padam) A word, (punaH) however, (naadaanusa.nhaara-buddhi-nirgraahyam iti) is taken in by the mind all at once i.e., taken up a unified appearance just as the last literal sound ceases. (varNaaH) Literal sounds (= individual alphabets), (eka-samaya-asambhavitvaat) being impossible to be expressed = uttered simultaneously, (paraspara-niranugrahaatmaanaH) do not support one-another (= have unrelated nature), so, (te) they (aavirbhuutaaH tirobhuutaaH cha) appear and disappear (asamsprishya) showing no connection (padam) to a particular word and (anupasthaapya) do not bring a word into consciousness. (iti) It is, therefore, (uchyante) said that (pratyekam) each lateral sound (= individual alphabet) (apada-svaruupaaH) is not the word (itself) in order to convey any meaning.
But as per another view, (punaH) however, (ekaikaH varNaH) every single alphabet, (sahakaari-varNaantara-pratiyogitvaat) being related to the other associated alphabets (padaatmaa) have the nature of word; (sarva-abhidhaana-shakti-prachitaH) has the potentiality of supplying the meaning = knowledge of all subjects; (vaishva-ruupyam-iva-aapannaH) having the capacity of universal application = i.e., can be applied to various nature of words, and appear in combination with every conjoined alphabet; (cha) and (visheShe avasthaapitaH) is particularly positioned as (puurvaH) previous one (uttareNa) with the later alphabet (cha) and (uttaraH) later one (puurveNa iti) with the previous alphabet. (evam) Thus (bahavaH varNaaH) many lateral sounds = alphabets, (krama-anurodhinaH) being want to be placed in different order = sequence, (iyante) are known (artha-sa~Nketena-avachchhinnaaH) as capable of supplying a meaning. For example (ete) the lateral sounds = alphabets (gakaara-aukaara-visarjaniiyaaH) "g", "au" and "H" (sarva-abhidhaana-shakti-parivrittaaH) possessing the potentiality of giving name and meaning to all objects (dyotayanti) denotes in this particular order, (saasnaadi-mantam artham iti) the particular object which is possessed of udders i.e., a cow.
(tat) That (vaachakam) signifier (vaachyasya) of the signified object (sa~Nketyate) is known as (padam) a word is (tat) that (yaH) which (artha-sa~Nketena-avachchhinnaanaam) indicates the particular object, (upasa.nhrita-dhvani-kramaaNaam) appears just succession of (eteShaam) these literal sounds and (ekaH buddhi-nirbhaasaH) is a single manifestation of a mind.
(tat) That (ekam padam) single word is (eka-buddhi-viShayam) a single manifestation of a mind; (eka-prayatna-aakShiptam) brought into existence by a single effort of lateral sounds; (abhaagam) has no parts and (akramam) no order i.e., appear at a time, (avarNam) distinct from lateral sounds, (bauddham) is a phenomenon of the mind; (antya-varNa-pratyaya-vyaapaara-upasthaapitam) brought into consciousness by the operation of the notion of the last lateral sound = alphabet; (pratiiyate) understood (loka-buddhyaa) by the mind of the world (= or by the normal social mind) (varNaiH) came in existence by the conjunction of alphabets, (siddhavat) as it were eternal, (samprati-pattyaa) on account of similar social dealings established in the people, (anaadi-vaag-vyavahaara-vaasanaa-anuviddhayaa) by the eternal habit brought about by its potency, having been with the help of lateral sounds, (abhidhiiyamaanaiH) uttered by the speaker (cha) and (shruuya-maaNaiH) heard (shrotribhiH) by the people, (paratra pratipipaadayiShayaa eva) for the purpose of transferring the verbal thoughts sings to the others.
(tasya) That word is (pravibhaagaH) used to distinguish the object (sa~Nketa-buddhitaH) by the conventional meaning of it; as (evam jaatiiyakaH anusa.nhaaraH) such and such succession and mixture of (etaavataam) so, many alphabets/letters so, ending (vaachakaH) denote (ekasya arthasya iti) an object. (sa~NketaH tu) Convention, however, is (itaretara-adhyaasa-ruupaH) in the form of mixed-up knowledge of (pada-padaarthayoH) the word and its denoted object, and (smrityaatmakaH) in the form of memory; as (yaH ayam shabdaH saH ayam arthaH) "This object is same as this word", and (yaH ayam arthaH saH ayam shabdaH iti) "This word is same as this object". (evam) In this way, (sa~NketaH bhavati) convention is (itaretara-adhyaasa-ruupaH iti) the mixed-up knowledge of the word and the object. (evam) Thus (ete shabdaartha-pratyayaaH) these words, objects, and their knowledge (sa~NkiirNaaH) are mixed up = run into one another (itaretara-adhyaasaat) on account of seeing the properties of these in one another; as (gauH iti shabdaH) "Cow" is used as a word, (gauH iti arthaH) "Cow" is used for denoting the animal object, (gauH iti j~naanam) "Cow" is used for the knowledge generated by this object in the mind (Although these three are entirely different in properties as explained in aphorism 1.42). (yaH) Whoever (pravibhaagaj~naH) knows the distinction of properties of (eShaam) these three = i.e., word, object, and knowledge (saH) he (sarvavit) knows the words of all human beings.
(cha) And (sarva-padeShu) in all words (asti) lies (vaakya-shaktiH) power of the sentence. (vrikShaH iti ukteH) By saying "A tree" (asti iti gamyate) the word "is" is understood; since (padaarthaH) the object so, denoted (na sattaam vyabhicharati iti) never fails to its existence. (tathaa) Similarly, (kriyaa) a verb = an action (na asti) is not possible (asaadhanaa hi iti) without its means i.e., without the existence of its performer, and its objects on which it is performed. (tathaa cha) And thus (pachati iti ukte) by saying "cooks" (sarva-kaarakaaNaam) all the related appliances for the act of cooking (aakShepaH) are also implied. (karttri-karaNa-karmaNaam chaitra-agni-taNDulaanaam) Manifestation of "Chaitra" as subject = performer, fire as an instrument, and rice as an object of the cooking (niyamaarthaH anuvaadaH iti) are for the purpose of specialization only. (cha) And (vaakyaarthe) for the meaning of the sentence (pada-rachanam) creation of a word is (driShTam) also seen - as (chhando.adhiite) "Reads the Vedic hymns" for this sentence (shrotriyaH) a word "Vedic student" and (praaNaan dhaarayati) "holding the breath" for this sentence (jiivati) a word "lives" expresses the meaning of the entire sentence.
(tatra) And there (padaartha-abhivyaktiH) meaning of the word is expressed (vaakye) in the sentence (since the meaning is not clear by the word alone), (tataH) therefore, (padam) words (vyaakarNiiyam) should be explained (pravibhajya) by specific division i.e., (kriyaa-vaachakam vaa kaaraka-vaachakam vaa) it is a verb or a noun; (anyathaa) Otherwise (katham vyaakriyeta) how would it be possible to construe a word (kriyaayaam kaarake vaa) a verb or a noun (nirj~naatam) when it cannot be known (naama-aakhyaata-saaruupyaat iti) on account of the similarity of form of noun and verb of a word, such as (bhavati-ashvah-ajaapayaH iti evam aadiShu) in case of words like "bhavati", "ashvah" and "ajaapayah" (- since these are used as nouns as well as verbs in Sanskrit literature).
(teShaam shabdaartha-pratyayaanaam) The word, object, and its meaning have (pravibhaagaH) specific distinction. (tad yathaa) Thus as in (shvetate praasaadaH) "The mansion is whitened" (iti) here "white" is (kriyaarthaH) a verb; and in (shvetaH praasaadaH) "A white mansion" (iti) here "white" (kaarakaarthaH shabdaH) signifies a noun; (tadarthaH) therefore the "white" is meant for (kriyaa-kaarakaatmaa) a verb and a noun respectively, and (pratyayaH) manifestation of knowledge of these two is (cha) also in the form of the verb and noun. (kasmaat) How is there a distinction between word, object, and knowledge? (abhisambandhaat) On account of correlation (saH ayam iti) "this is that" i.e., mixed up the appearance of these (pratyayaH sa~NketaH) conventional knowledge of the three (ekaakaara eva iti) appears as one only.
(yaH tu) And, however, (shvetaH arthaH) the "white" object (saH) that (aalambaniibhuutaH) is the support for (shabda-pratyayoH) the word and the knowledge, (hi) since (saH) that object alone (vikriyamaaNaH) on getting changed (svaabhiH avasthaabhiH) by its states = positions (na shabda-sahagataH) neither mix up with the word (na buddhi-sahagataH) nor with the knowledge.
(evam) Similarly (shabdaH) the word, and (evam) similarly (pratyayaH) the knowledge also (na itaretara-sahagatah) does not mix up with others. (iti) Therefore (anyathaa shabdaH) word is different, (anyathaa arthaH) object is different, and (anyathaa pratyayaH) knowledge is different, (iti vibhaagaH) this is their division. (evam) In this way (tat pravibhaaga-sa.nyamaat) by performing Sanyama on the distinction of the three (yoginaH) Yogi (sampadyate) obtains (sarva-bhuutaH-utaGYaanam iti) the knowledge of words of all human beings.
Vedic Commentary in English : When the yogi performs Sanyama over the distinction of the word, object, and its knowledge, then he gets the knowledge (= power of understanding the meaning) of words of all human beings.
The literal word of any object, the target object of that word, and its knowledge are different from one another, as —
"Cow" - is a word that means — when some person speaks through the throat, tongue, and palate as a sound that is cognizable by an ear.
"Cow" - an object that means — the physical body of the animal having particular properties like color, form, size, etc.
"Cow" - the knowledge that means — the modification of mind about the object named as a cow.
These three are different, their properties are also different from one another. But in the normal course of life, these three appear as one. When the yogi knows the distinct properties of these three and performs Sanyama over their distinction, then knows the meaning of words of all human beings.
Seer Vyaasa had clarified in the commentary to this aphorism that every uttered individual alphabet, individually, does not become a word and convey any meaning. But these alphabets become "words" when combined with the previous and later alphabets, and are capable of conveying a particular meaning. As in the word "cow", c, o, and w do not convey any meaning individually, but as a whole, it indicates the animal cow. This word conveys a meaning = subject in the mind. The properties of the "word" are as follows —
1. It is the subject of a mind = that conveys a particular knowledge;
2. It is brought into existence by a single effort of lateral sounds;
3. It has no parts and appears at a time;
4. It is distinct from lateral sounds = individual alphabets and is a phenomenon of the mind;
5. It is brought into consciousness by the operation of the notion of the last alphabet;
6. It is uttered by the speaker for the purpose of transferring verbal thoughts and being heard by the people, appearing as if it were eternal, by the eternal habit and potencies established in the people.
Every word has the power of conveying the meaning of the sentence, as by saying "a tree" the word "is" is understood since no object fails to its existence. Similarly, no verb = action is without its performer, as on saying the action - "cooks", then the person performing cooking named as "Chaitra", the object which is cooked "rice" and the instrument on which it is cooked "fire"; being the related appliances are also implied. In the same way, the meaning of the sentence is seen in the creation of a word, for which the examples of "Vedic student" and "Lives" are given in the commentary.
The meaning of the word is expressed in the sentence only, as the meaning is not clear by the word alone; so, the word should be explained by its division i.e., it is a verb or a noun, otherwise irrelevant meaning will be conveyed. For this, the examples of "bhavati, ashvaH, and ajaapayaH" are given, from the Sanskrit literature, where these words are used as a noun as well as a verb. As (1) in the sentence "ghato bhavati", the word "bhavati" is used as a verb showing the existence of a jar; and in the sentence "bhavati ! bhikshaam dehi", the word "bhavati" is used as a noun which indicates a lady; (2) in the sentence "tvam ashvaH", the word "ashvaH" is used as a verb with the meaning you have breathed; and in the sentence "ashvaH dhaavati" the word "ashvaH" is used as a noun with meaning ashvaH = horse is running.; and (3) in the sentence "tvam ajaapayaH shatrun", the word "ajaapayaH" is used as a verb with the meaning - the enemies got defeated by you; and in the sentence "tvam ajaapayaH pib", the word "ajaapayaH" is used as a noun with the meaning - you drink the goat's milk. So, if the proper differentiation of verbs and nouns is not done, then the true meaning of a sentence cannot be known.
Similarly, Seer Vyaasa gives the example of knowledge of a verb from the sentence "shvetate praasaadaH" which means "the mansion is whitened", from the word "white"; and knowledge of a noun from the word "white" in the sentence "shvetaH praasaadaH" which means - "a white mansion"; and said that both the meanings in the form of verb and noun are known from the word. So, the object is not mixed up with the word, nor it is mixed up with the knowledge. In the same way, word and knowledge are also not mixed with each other and with the object; since "word" is different and its properties are different, 'object' is different and its properties are different, and 'knowledge' is different and its properties are also different. In this way by knowing the distinction of these three, and performing Sanyama on the distinction of three, the yogi attains the knowledge of words of all human beings.
On the basis of this aphorism, some modern commentators have indicated that by the performance of such Sanyama yogi know the knowledge of all living beings including men, animals, birds, etc. But there is no such indication in the Vyaasa commentary. As Seer Vyaasa had described the knowledge of the manifestation of words from alphabets, and their meanings, which is applicable to human beings only, not in the language of animals and birds, etc. However, Bhoja had indicated the knowledge of words of animals, snakes, deer, birds, etc. But there is no verbal testimony in this regard in the Vedic literature, so, such Sanyama should be acceptable in the language of human beings only. Commentators after Bhoja had included the knowledge of the language of other living beings on the basis of the commentary of Bhoja only.
Query:- What is the testimony to accept only 'human beings from the word "bhuuta" in the aphorism?
Solution:- See where speech is explained in the Yajurveda 5.12, there is a word "bhuutebhyaH" is described as "prajaa vai bhuutani" in Shatapatha 3.5.2.13 (and 'prajaa' is meant for peoples only). Similarly, Swami Dayanand Saraswati had described "bhuutebhyaH" as "living human beings, etc." in his commentary on this hymn. He had clearly said to accept such speech which destroys all the defects, illuminating in nature, removing the defects of nescience, etc. by the knowledge of Vedas, is used in the study and teaching, useful for the behavior while dealing with the administration and justice, and make available all the material well-being, etc.
Such type of speech cannot be proved in the language of animals and birds etc. Similarly, animals and birds cannot be included in 'prajaa' as referred to in Shatapatha BhraahmaHa. In Atharvaveda 19.71.1, animals and 'prajaa' are separately mentioned. In the same way in the Maitraayani Samhita 3.8.5 - "devaaH hi-eva bhuutaa" which means intellectuals are "bhuutaa". How one can include animals, birds, etc. in the intellectuals as per this testimony?
So, the yogi attains the knowledge of all human beings through the Sanyama as explained in this aphorism.
Query:- As per the above testimony of the hymn of Yajurveda 5.12, Swami Dayanand had used the words "living human beings, etc." so, who are other living beings, those are "etc."?
Solution:- Here the other living beings, other than men using the Sanskrit language, are malechchha, asura, gandharva, kinnar, kimpurusha, yaksha, raakshas, etc. as per Vyaasa commentary to aphorism 3.26 are to be taken from the word "etc.". The meaning of these terms is explained in aphorism 3.26.
Query:- In Chhaandogya-UpaniShada 4.1.2-5, there is a clear example of listening and understanding the language of two swans by King Jaanashruti. So, as per this testimony, we should accept having knowledge of animals and birds through this attainment.
Solution:- In the given context, King Jaanashruti had heard the talk of two "hansa" = swans (birds) during sleep, not in the awakening state. In the Sanskrit literature word, "hansa" also stands for the Soul as per Niruktaa 14.11. So, King Jaanashruti had heard the two manifestations of mind (arising by the power of Soul) in the wish of spiritual well-being, during the sleep only; not the language of real swans. There is no reference to listening to the language of animals/birds etc. in the Vedic literature.
However, it is possible for a man who lives among animals to understand the difference between various sounds of animals by his experience, i.e., it is the sound of joy; it is the sound of sadness; it is the sound of fear, etc. but such understanding does not mean that one can clearly know the language of that animal. He cannot know that the cow is saying that "some insect is sucking my blood", "someone is coming to kill me, please save me" or "a thorn had pierced my foot, take it out", or "it is the time to take the milk" etc.

“गौ” शब्द से तात्पर्य — किसी व्यक्ति द्वारा कण्ठ, तालु आदि के संयोग से उदात्तादि स्वर युक्त उच्चारण किया जाने वाला और श्रोत्रन्द्रिय से ग्रहण होने वाला ध्वनिरूप है;
“गौ” अर्थ — सास्नादि लक्षण युक्त शरीर = पिण्ड वाला पशु विशेष उस “गौ” शब्द का अर्थ है;
१. यह एक बुद्धि का विषय होता = एक ज्ञान का बोध कराता;
२. एक ध्वनिरूप प्रयत्न से सम्पादित होता;
३. अखण्ड और क्रमरहित = एक समय में उपलब्ध होता;
४. पद वर्णों से भिन्न बुद्धिनिष्ठ = बुद्धिग्राह्य होता;
५. अपने अन्तिम वर्ण के ज्ञान रूप व्यापार से अभिव्यक्त होता;
