Ancient seer Meaning in English : (khalu amii sa.nskaaraaH) These residual potencies are (dvaye) two-fold — (1) (vaasanaaruupaaH) appearing as residua = habits and (smriti-klesha-hetavaH) causing memory and afflictions; (2) (dharma-adharma-ruupaaH) appearing as virtue and vice and (vipaaka-hetavaH) causing fruition. (te) Both types of residual potencies (puurva-bhava-abhisa.nskritaaH) had been potentiated in previous births = lives, (aparidriShTaaH) are invisible (chitta-dharmaaH) characteristics of mind, (pariNaama-cheShTaa-nirodha-shakti-jiivana-dharmavat) like change, movement, suppression, power, power of life and characterization. (sa.nyamaH) Sanyama (teShu) in these potencies (samarthaH) has the power of (sa.nskaara-saakShaat-kriyaayai) achieving the direct cognition of residual potencies. (cha) And (saakShaat-karaNam) direct cognition of (teShaam) these residual potencies (na asti) do not take place (vinaa) without (desha-kaala-nimitta-anubhavaiH) the knowledge of the place, time, and operative cause of the potencies. (tat ittham sa.nskaara-saakShaat-karaNaat) By having direct cognition of residual potencies by Sanyama (yoginaH) Yogi (utpadyate) gets (puurva-jaati-j~naanam) the knowledge of the previous life-state. (evam) In this way (sa.nkaara-saakShaat-karaNaat) by having direct cognition of residual potencies (paratra api eva) of the previous life-state also, (para-jaati-samvedanam) knowledge of the previous life-state of that known previous life-state is also obtained.
(atra) Here (idam aakhyaanam) this story is (shruuyate) is heard — (bhagavataH jaigiiShavyasya) The great Seer Jaigiishavya (praadurabhuut) obtained (vivekajam j~naanam) the distinctive knowledge (anupashyataH) after seeing (janma-pariNaama-kramam) the direct succession of live-changes (dashasu mahaa-sargeShu) during the ten great creations (sa.nskaara-saakShaat-karaNaat) by having direct cognition of his residual potencies. (atha) In this regard, (tanudharaH bhagavaan aavaTyaH) the Seer Aavatya (tam uvaacha) asked him — (dashasu mahaasargeShu) "During the ten great creations (anabhibhuuta-buddhi-sattvena) being having the mind-power, which has not been overpowered, (bhavyatvaat) on account of extensive capability, and (duHkham sampashyataa) having experienced the pain (naraka-tiryag-garbha-sambhavam) while taking birth in the hell = painful life-states, animal, birds, etc. and for that staying in the wombs of different female beings, and (utpadyamaanena) having taken birth (punaH punaH) again and again (deva-manuShyeShu) among men and gods, (kim) what (tavyaa) have you (upalabdham) experienced (dhikam) more (sukha-duHkhayoH iti) of pleasure or pain?
(jaigiiShavyaH) Great Seer Jaigiishavya (uvaacha) replied (bhagavantam aavaTyam) to Seer Aavatya — (dashasu mahaa-sargeShu) "During the ten great creations (anabhibhuuta-buddhi-sattvena) being having the mind-power, which has not been overpowered, (bhavyatvaat) on account of extensive capability, and (duHkham sampashyataa) having experienced the pain (naraka-tiryag-garbha-sambhavam) while taking birth in the hell = painful life-states, animal, birds, etc. and for that staying in the wombs of different female beings, and (utpadyamaanena) having taken birth (punaH punaH) again and again (deva-manuShyeShu) among men and gods, (yat kinchit) whatever (anubhuutam) had been experienced (mayaa) by me, (pratyavaimi) I consider (tat sarvam) that all is (duHkham eva) pain only.
(bhagavaan aavaTyaH) Seer Aavatya (uvaacha) again asked — (yat idam)Whatever this (pradhaana-vashitvam) mastery over the Matter (aayuShmataH) enjoyed by you, in your long-life, (cha) and (anuttamam) invaluable = non-comparable (santoSha-sukham) pleasure of contentment — (kim) do you (nikshiptam) place (idam api) these also (duHkha-pakShe iti) in the category of pain? (bhagavaan jaigiiShavyaH) The great Seer Jaigiishavya (uvaacha) replied — (idam) this (santoSha-sukham) pleasure of contentment (uktam) is said as (anuttamam) invaluable, (viShaya-sukha-apekShayaa eva) in comparison with the joy of sensations = material objects; however (duHkham eva) it is pain only (kaivalya-apekShayaa) in comparison of the bliss of salvation = absolute freedom. Since (ayam) this pleasure of contentment is (dharmaH) characteristic (buddhi-sattvasya) of mind and (triguNaH) is in the nature of three Qualities. (cha) And (triguNaH pratyayaH) any knowledge = experience of the three Qualities (heya-pakShe nyastaH iti) is placed in the side of avoidable pain alone. (triShNaa-tantuH) The chain of desires is of (duHkharuupaH) the nature of pain. (triShNaa-duHkha-santaapa-apagamaat tu) On removal of anxiety of pain of desires, however, (idam sukham) this pleasure of contentment (uktam) is said as (prasannam) calm, (abaadham) undisturbed, (sarva-anukuulam iti) and embracing to all.
Vedic Commentary in English : By performing Sanyama on the residual potencies, the yogi has knowledge of previous births. Seer Vyaasa said that there are two types of residual potencies — (1) in the form of habits, causing memory and afflictions; and (2) in the form of virtue and vice, causing fruition = life-state, lifetime, and experiences.
While writing the commentary on aphorism 3.15 Seer Vyaasa declared residual potencies as invisible characteristics of the mind. This fact is again clarified here and said that both the type of potencies, which are accumulated during the previous births, are invisible characteristics of the mind. Swami Dayanand Saraswati in his book Aryouddeshyaratnamaala on points 49-50 said "The potency of acts performed in the present is accumulated in the mind, and this is called accumulated potency." These accumulated potencies exist with the Soul in the life-cycle.
By performing Sanyama on these potencies, the direct cognizance of potencies takes place, along with the knowledge of the place, time, and operative causes of these potencies. It means Yogi knows when, where and on account of which causes, these potencies were generated. So, by having the direct cognition of residual potencies in this way, Yogi has the knowledge of the previous life-state. The knowledge of the previous life-state takes place to the Yogi who performs Sanyama on the accumulated residual potencies; other people cannot have such knowledge.
In the commentary to this aphorism Seer Vyaasa had written - "paratra api evam sa.nkaara-saakShaat-karaNaat para-jaati-samvedanam" and while translating these all-other commentators had written that - "by having direct cognition of residual potencies of other people, yogi achieves the knowledge of previous births of such people". It means that by performing Sanyama on the potencies accumulated in the mind of other people, the yogi is able to have the knowledge of the previous birth of that person, by having direct cognition of his potencies along with the knowledge of their place, time, and operative cause. This conception is worth questionable on the following grounds —
1. External places or external objects are not the subject of Sanyama for the Yogi (Ref commentary on aphorism 3.1). The residual potencies accumulated in the mind of the other person are the external subject for the yogi. So, Sanyama (= Concentration, Meditation, and Trance) on the potencies accumulated in the other person's mind, being the external subject = object, cannot be possible.
2. Seer Patanjali had said in aphorism 3.20 — "na cha tat-saalambanam tasya-aviShayii-bhuuta-tvaat" which means that knowledge of other's mind is not along with its object, since that object of modification = knowledge in the other's mind is not the subject of Sanyama for this Yogi. When Yogi is not able to make the objects of modifications of other's mind, which exist in the present moments, as his subject of Sanyama, then how can he make the residual potencies of other person's mind, which were accumulated in his previous life, as the subject of his Sanyama? Seer Vyaasa had clearly said that when direct cognition of residual potencies is achieved along with the knowledge of their place, time, and operative cause, then the knowledge of previous births is achieved. So, as per the conception of aphorism 3.20, since it is not possible to perform Sanyama on the residual potencies of other person's mind along with their place, time, and operative cause, Yogi can neither have the direct cognition of residual potencies of other's mind, nor he can know the previous births of other persons.
3. Even the attainment of knowledge of another person's mind as per aphorism 3.19 is with regard to the modification of the mind which are visible characteristics of the mind. On the other hand, residual potencies are invisible characteristics of the mind, and there is no provision, in the philosophy of Yoga, for performing Sanyama over the invisible characteristics of another person's mind. Hence such a type of commentary, by other commentators, is against the principle of Yoga.
The correct meaning of this has been explained above in our translation of the Vyaasa gloss. It means that by having the knowledge of the previous life-state, then by performing Sanyama on the residual potencies of that previous birth, Yogi is able to know the previous birth of that known previous birth. And this sequence gets continued for a long time, as Seer Jaigiishavya had achieved the knowledge of previous births during the last ten great creations. It is not possible to have the knowledge of all previous births by performing Sanyama on all the residual potencies at once, so, knowledge of previous births is possible in succession = in reverse sequence.
Query:- As per a question in chapter 9 of Light of Truth, Swami Dayanand Saraswati had clearly declared that knowledge of previous births is not possible, since the Soul has limited knowledge. Then how this conception is to be accepted?
Solution:- In the above chapter, while answering a question, Swami Dayanand said that when it is not possible to have a memory of all the events of the present life, hence it is not possible to have a memory of previous lives. In this regard, he had also said even if the Soul wanted to know the previous birth, he could not know that. See the context in that chapter was - "despite various life-states, why he does not have the memory of previous life-states, and on account of non-memory as above, then how the fruits of his acts, receivable in the fruition system of GOD, be linked to his previous acts and how will be improved and remain away from such sinful acts?" Swami Dayanand had replied in this context only. These replies are not in the context of attainments of Yoga. So, replies of general context should not be used to contradict the conceptions of a specialized philosophy.
Swami Dayanand had denied the knowledge of previous births on the grounds of the memory power of the person. It is as per principles that the memory of residual potencies, which are invisible characteristics of the mind, cannot be there, and for this reason, the common man does not have the memory of previous births. On the other hand, by the performance of Sanyama, it is possible for the yogi to attain the knowledge of previous births, and the same is established by Seer Patanjali in this aphorism. And Seer Vyaasa had given the conversation of Seer Jaigiishavya and Seer Aavatyah to establish this theory. In this regard Seer Kanaada had also said that potencies are also the cause of memory —
aatmamanasoH sa.nyoga-visheShaat-sa.nskaaraat cha smritiH.
VaisheShika Philosophy 9.2.6.
The memory takes place by the specific communion of mind and soul, and by residual potencies. So, it is also seen in life that by the stimulation of residual potencies, one does have the knowledge of previous birth. Hence residual potencies are also the operative cause of memory.
So, it is not proper to draw any decision by using the conceptions given in the different contexts. Swami Dayanand Saraswati had accepted the Vyaasa-commentary as fully authentic, then using his references, given in the other contexts, to contradict the principles of Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa cannot be considered proper.
So, this attainment, as established by Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa, is as per principles that can be achieved by the Yogi by performing Sanyama as above.
