Ancient seer Meaning in English : (tatra) Out of the five forms (dharmaiH) the characteristics of (aakaaraadibhiH) shape etc. (paarthivaadyaaH) of the five gross elements = objects i.e., earth, etc. (saha) along with (shabdaadayaH) sound, touch, color, taste, and odour properties (visheShaaH) which specialize them (pari-bhaaShitaaH) are defined (sthuula-shabdena) by the word "Gross". (etat) This is (prathamam) first (ruupam) appearance (bhuutaanaam) of gross elements.
(sva-saamaanyam) Their own general characteristics of the gross elements is (dvitiiyam) the second (ruupam) appearance, as (muurttiH) shape is a general characteristic of (bhuumiH) earth; (snehaH) fluidness is a general characteristic of (jalam) water; (uShNataa) heat is a general characteristic of (vahniH) fire; (praNaamii) movement = impulsiveness is a general characteristic of (vaayuH) air; and (sarvataH gatiH) omnipresence is a general characteristic of (aakaashaH) the sky. (iti etat) These general characteristics are (uchyate) defined by (svaruupa-shabdena) the word "Nature". (shabdaadayaH) Sound, touch, color, taste, and odour are (visheShaaH) specific manifestation of (asya) these (saamaanyasya) general qualities of earth, etc. (cha) And (tathaa uktam) it has been said — "(eShaam eka-jaati-samanvitaanaam) the general qualities of these gross elements manifested together in one species (dharma-maatra-vyaavrittiH iti) manifest by their specific characteristics alone." so, (atra) here (saamaanya-visheSha-samudaayaH) a group of general and specific qualities is called (dravyam) a substance.
(samuuhaH) A group (hi dviShThaH) is of two descriptions — (1) (pratyastamita-bheda-avayava-anugataH) where the distinction of its members is not shown by words i.e., the individual members disappear in the identity of the group, such as (shariiram vrikShaH yutham vanam iti) the body, the tree, the herd, the forest, etc; and (2) (samuuhaH) a group (shabdena-upaatta-bheda-avayava-anugataH) where the distinction of its individual members is shown by words, such as (ubhaye deva-manuShyaaH) a group of gods = intellects and men. (samuuhasya) Of this group (devaa ekaH bhaagaH) gods = intellects are one portion, and (manuShyaaH dvitiiyaH bhaagaH) men are another portion. (taabhyaam eva) Both gods and men jointly (abhidhiiyate) are said (samuuhaH) as a group. (cha) And (saH) in that group (bheda-abheda-vivakShitaH) distinction of its individual members may or may not be implied = mentioned, such as (aamraaNaam vanam) a grove of mangoes, and (braahmaNaanaam sa~Ngham) association of devotees are examples of a group where its individual members are distinct from each other; and (aamravaNam) a mango grove, and (braahmaNa-sa~Ngha iti) devotee-union are the example of group where the distinction of its individual member is not specific.
(punaH) And again (saH) that group (dvividhaH) is of two descriptions — (1) (yuta-siddha-avayavaH) the group of separately identified individuals i.e., its parts are separately identified, (cha) and (2) (ayuta-siddha-avayavaH) the group in which the parts cannot be separated i.e., the combined parts make the group identifiable. (vanam sa~NghaH iti) A forest and an association are the examples of (yuta-siddha-avayavaH samuuhaH) the groups where individual parts are separate from one another; and (shariiram vrikShaH paramaaNuH iti) a body, a tree, and an atom are the examples of (ayuta-siddha-avayavaH sa~NghaataH) the groups where the combined parts from the group itself. (patanjaliH) According to the Seer Patanjali (dravyam) a substance is (ayuta-siddha-avayava-bheda-anugataH samuuhaH iti) a group where its parts cannot be separated and also are not meant to be distinguished from one another. (etat) This is (uktam) said as (svaruupam iti) the nature (= the second appearance) of the gross elements.
(atha) Now (kim) what is (suukShmaruupam) the subtle appearance of (eShaam) the gross elements? (tanmaatram) The subtle element = astral atom is (bhuuta-kaaraNam) the cause of gross elements, (tasya) whose (ekaH) one (avayavaH) part is (paramaaNuH) an atom, and (samudaayaH) is a group which (saamaanya-visheShaatmaa) consists of the generic and specific qualities and (ayuta-siddha-avayava-bheda-anugataH iti) whose parts are not separated and also not distinguished from one another. (evam) In this way (sarva-tanmaatraaNi) all astral atoms = subtle elements are also substances. (etat) This, the astral atom, is (tritiiyam) the third appearance of the gross elements.
(atha) Now (chaturtham ruupam) the fourth appearance of (bhuutaanaam) the gross elements, is described. (guNaaH) These are "Qualities" (khyaati-kriyaa-sthiti-shiilaaH) whose characteristics are Illumination, Activity, and Inertia and (kaarya-svabhaava-anupaatinaH) are followed in the nature of effects (= the products made from the "Qualities" = i.e., the all-material objects); and these "Qualities" are (uktaaH) denoted (anvaya-shabdena) by the word "conjunction".
(atha) And now (pa~nchamam ruupam) the fifth appearance of (eSham) the gross elements are (arthavattvam) the purposefulness, i.e., (bhoga-apavargaarthataa) the purpose of providing experience and salvation to the Souls, (guNeShu eva anvayini) is apparent in the three "Qualities". And (guNaaH) the "Qualities" of Illumination etc. alone (tanmaatra-bhuuta-bhautikeShu) follows in the astral = subtle elements, gross elements, and things = objects of elements. (iti) Hence (sarvam) all these = subtle and gross elements and its products are (arthavat) having the same purpose of providing experience and salvation for the Souls.
(idaaniim) Now (sa.nyamaat) by Sanyama (pa~ncha-ruupeShu) over the five appearances (teShu pa~nchasu bhuuteShu) of those five gross elements, (svaruupa) nature of (tasya tasya ruupasya) that appearance over which Sanyama is performed, (darshanam) is cognized, (cha) and (jayaH) conquest over it (praadurbhavati) is obtained. (tatra) Then (jitvaa) having conquered (pa~ncha bhuuta-svaruupaaNi) the five appearances of the gross elements, the yogi (bhavati) becomes (bhuutajayii) the master of gross elements. (tat jayaat) By that conquest (bhuuta-prakritayaH) the nature = power of the gross elements (sa~Nkalpa-anu-vidhaayinyaH bhavanti) works according to = follows the will of (asya) this yogi (gaavaH iva) as the cows (vatsaanusaariNyaH) follows their calves.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism, Seer Patanjali explained the attainment of mastery over the gross elements by performing Sanyama over the gross, nature, subtle, conjunction, and purposefulness forms = appearances of these elements. There is the advice of sequential Sanyama over the five forms. These forms are to be understood as follows —
1. Gross appearance of elements:- Seer Vyaasa had accepted the characteristics of shape etc. along with their specialized properties. Various properties of these elements, as given by Vachaspati Mishra and Vijyaanbhikshu on the basis of some unavailable scripture, are as follows —
aakaaro gauravam raukShyam varaNam sthairyameva cha.
vrittiH-bhedaH kShamaa kaarShNyam kaaThinyam sarva-bhogyataa.
The characteristics of the earth are - form, heaviness, roughness, obstruction, stability, the base of living beings, difference, support, turbidity, hardness, and enjoy-ability by living beings.
snehaH saukShmyam prabhaa shauklyam maadarvam gauravam cha tat.
shaityam rakShaa pavitratvam samsaadhanam chaudakaa guNaaH.
The characteristics of water are - smoothness, subtlety, clearness, whiteness, softness, heaviness, coolness, preservation, purification, and cementation.
uurdhvabhaak paachakam dagdhri paavakam laghu bhaasvaram.
pradhva.nsyojariva vai tejaH puurvaabhyaam bhinnalakShaNam.
The characteristics of fire are - going upward, cooking, burning, purification, lightness, shining, destruction, and power-ness; possessed of such qualities is fire, different from previous ones.
tiryagyaanam pavitratvamokShopo nodanam balam.
chalamachchhaayataa raukShyam vaayoH-dharmaaH prithagvidhaaH.
The characteristics of air are - transverse motion, purification, throwing, pushing, strength, move-ability, throwing no shadow, and roughness; these characteristics of air are different from previous ones.
sarvatogathih-avyuuho.aviShTambhaH-cha-iti te trayaaH.
aakaashadharmaa vyaakhyaataaH puurvadharma-vilakShaNaaH.
The characteristics of the sky are - omnipresence = existence on all sides, non-agglomeration, and non-obstruction = providing space; these three are said to be the characteristics of the sky, different from the characteristics of the preceding ones.
Along with the characteristics of shape etc., as above, the properties of sound, etc. of the elements that specialize them are also known as gross form. Odour is the property of earth, the taste is of water, color is of fire, touch is of air, and sound is the property of sky which specialize these from one another. It means that odour is the specific property of the earth, and the same is not available in other gross elements; in the same way, the taste is the specific property of water, and the same is not available in fire, air, and sky; color is the specific property of fire which is not available in air and sky; touch is the specific property of air, which is not available in the sky; and sound is the specific property of sky only. In this way, these specific properties along with the characteristics of shape, etc. are the "Gross" appearance of the gross elements = objects.
2. Nature appearance of elements:- The general characteristics of gross elements are called the “Nature” appearance of elements. These general characteristics are described as follows — shape is the general characteristic of the earth; fluidness is the general characteristic of water; heat is the general characteristic of fire; movement is the general characteristic of air, and omnipresence is the general characteristic of the sky. These general characteristics always remain available in all the products of each gross element. On this basis, these general characteristics are defined as "Nature", which becomes the subject of Sanyama.
In this reference, nature = form of the substance is clarified. Here the group of general and specific qualities is called a substance. The group is of two types —
1. A group of such members where the distinction of its members is not shown by words, such as the body, the tree, the herd, and the forest. Here, the body is not called a group of hands, mouth, legs, etc. In the same way, other groups are to be understood.
2. A group of members where the distinction of its individual members is shown by words, such as a group of gods and men. In this group distinction between the two is shown by words. This group is again of two types where the distinction of its members is implied (= the individual members are distinct from each other) or not implied (= the distinction of an individual member is not specific). The examples of the first type of group, where the distinction of its members is implied = mentioned, are 'grove of mangoes' and 'association of devotees'; and for the second type of group, where the distinction of individual members is not specific, is a ‘mango grove’ and 'devotee union'.
Further, the group is of two descriptions - a group of separate identified individuals and a group of non-separable individuals. The example of the first type is 'forest' and 'association' where the individual parts = members are separate from one another; and of the second type are 'body', 'tree', and 'atom' where combined parts form a group. For example, a leg, a hand, or a head cannot be called a 'body'. According to Seer Patanjali, a substance is a group where its parts cannot be separated and are not meant to be distinguished from one another. This is said as the "Nature" appearance of the gross elements.
3. Subtle appearance of elements:- The material cause of gross elements, in the form of earth, etc., is the subtle elements of odour, etc. These subtle elements are the products of the "conception of Egoism", and are in the form of astral atoms. This atom is a group that consists of generic and specific qualities, and whose parts are not separated and not distinguished from one another. This astral atom is the third appearance, of the gross elements, and is named as subtle.
4. Conjunction appearance of elements:- The gross elements = objects are the last material products of Matter. The Qualities of Illumination, Energy, and Inertia, whose characteristics are Illumination, Activity, and Inertia, are followed in the products generated from the "Matter". These three 'Qualities' are the 'Conjunction' appearance of gross elements.
5. Purposefulness appearance of elements:- The purposefulness of gross elements in the form of earth etc. is the same as that of "Qualities", the material cause of these elements. The purpose of Matter is said - to provide experience and salvation to Souls. Matter serves this purpose through its all products. So, the purpose of gross elements, being the last products of "Qualities", is the same i.e., providing experience and salvation to the Souls. This is the fifth appearance of gross elements.
By performing Sanyama over the five appearances of gross elements, in sequence, a yogi is able to cognize that form of the gross element on which Sanyama was performed. Here it should be kept in mind that at one time, Sanyama can be performed on one appearance of one gross element only, nor on all five appearances at the same time. In this way, by performing Sanyama over the five appearances of the gross element in the sequence, the yogi achieves conquest over it. On having conquered all the five appearances of the particular gross elements, the yogi gets attainment of mastery over that gross element. In this way by having mastery over all the five gross elements, he becomes a master of gross elements. By such mastery over the gross elements, nature = power of gross elements follows the will of this yogi. But any such will is neither against the rules of creation nor against the rules of GOD for the creation of these gross elements. This principle is clearly mentioned in the next aphorism by Seer Vyaasa.

(१) ऐसे अवयवों का समूह जिनका भेद शब्दों से प्रकट नहीं होता, जैसे कि शरीर, वृक्ष, झुण्ड, वन आदि। इसमें शरीर को हस्त-पाद आदि समूह नहीं कहा जाता, इसी प्रकार अन्य विषय में भी जानना चाहिए;
