Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism attainments of mastery over the gross elements are described. By the mastery over the gross elements, the yogi achieves powers of attenuation, etc., the perfection of the body, and characteristics of gross elements do not resist him.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati had clearly accepted the manifestation of powers of attenuation etc. in his commentary on Yajurveda. In the purport to hymn 17.67 he wrote — "yathaa manuShyaH svaatmanaa saha paramaatmaanam yu~Nkte tadaa aNimaadayaH siddhiyaH praadurbhavanti, tato.avyaahatagatyaabhiiShTaani sthaanaani gantum shaknoti; naanyathaa." i.e., when the yogi conjunct GOD with his Soul, then attainments of attenuation, etc. get manifested; and by these attainments, he can go to the desired places with high speed, not otherwise.
It has to be kept in mind that the attainments on account of mastery over the gross elements are not the attainments of knowledge, but these are the attainments of action, so, these are achieved only after properly working on the knowledge cognized by Sanyama over the five appearances of gross elements. This fact had been clearly said by Seer Vyaasa in his commentary over the last aphorism, as — "teShu idaaniim bhuuteShu pa~nchasu pa~ncharuupeShu sa.nyamaat-tasya tasy ruupasya svaruupa-darshanam jayaH cha praadurbhavati. tatra pa~ncha bhuutasvaruupaNi jitvaa bhuutajayi bhavati i.e., now by Sanyama over the five appearances of those five gross elements, nature of that appearance over which Sanyama is performed, is cognized, and conquest over it is obtained. Then having conquered the five appearances of the gross elements, the yogi becomes the master of gross elements". Hence yogi becomes the master of gross elements by cognizance of the nature of appearances, and conquest over the five appearances of gross elements. If it would have been the intention of "knowledge of five appearances of the gross elements" only, then the next part of the sentence i.e., "conquest" was not required to be specified. So, the second part of the sentence is showing the importance of "action" as per the knowledge obtained by cognizance of five appearances. It means that by mere cognizance of five appearances, mastery over the gross elements is not possible, 'for this' conquest over these five appearances is a must, and this conquest is not possible without material science. In this regard Swami Dayanand Saraswati wrote in his commentary to hymn of Yajurveda 11.2 — "yadi manuShyaaH parameshvarasya sriShTau samaahitaaH santo yogam tattvavidyaam cha yathashakti severan, teShu prakaashitaatmanaH santo yogam padaarthaviGYaanam chaabhyasyeyastarhi siddhii katham na praapnuyuH. i.e., when the yogi practices yoga by trance and material science in the world created by GOD and properly practices yoga and material science, then how can the attainments not be achieved? It means that without understanding the concepts of cognizance of the nature of gross elements in the trance by performing Sanyama, and "conquest" over them by material science, one cannot achieve the power of attenuation, etc. Further, in one of his lectures at Pune, he said —
"The viewer is meant by GOD. As per the philosophy of yoga, the yogi purifies the attainment. The powers of attenuation etc. are attainments. These manifest in the mind of the yogi. Common people believe that these manifest in the body of a yogi, but this is not correct. Attenuation means that the mind of the yogi becomes subtle and is able to cognize even smaller objects in the same way the mind of the yogi becomes large and covers even the larger objects, this is called the attainment of enlargement = Garima. These are the properties of mind, these powers are not possible in the body ..." (Updesha Manjari, Lecture 11)
Swami Dayanand had described the manifestation of the power of attenuation etc. in mind since such properties are not possible in the physical body of a man. In this regard, he explained the powers of attenuation and enlargement, which are not possible in the physical body. One of the reasons behind such a conception is that Seer Vyaasa had clearly said in the attainment of fulfillment of desire, that the determination of yogi cannot be against the determination of GOD, who is the administrator of the gross elements. It is possible that by mastery over the gross elements he can create such objects, by which the properties of these objects do not harm = obstruct him.
In his commentary to aphorism 4.1, Seer Vyaasa said - "mantraiH-aakaasha-gamana-aNimaadilaabhaH" i.e by the incantation = logical thinking yogi attains the power of movement in the sky and power of attenuation, etc. Here the meaning of incantation is to be understood with reference to the explanation given by Swami Dayanand in the 11th Chapter of his book "Light of Truth", where he said - by hymn (= logical thinking) first acquire the knowledge of objects of the world, and then by proper application thereof make many discoveries in the domain of art and various objects". So, it is clear that by the mastery of gross elements, the practical knowledge of these is also intended, not merely mental cognition.
Now with reference to the above explanation, we shall understand the meaning of powers of attenuation, etc. —
1. Attenuation - means becoming atomical. This capability is not possible in the physical body. This is possible in the mind, by having a Cognitive Trance on the atom. (Ref - Yoga aphorism 1.40 and 1.41 and Vedic commentary thereon) In this way, the mind becomes capable of cognizing, knowing, and pervading the subtler elements.
2. Enlargement - means becoming large. This capability is not possible in the physical body. This is possible in the mind, by having a Cognitive Trance on large objects like the sky. In this way the mind of the yogi becomes large and becomes capable of cognizing, pervading the large objects. (This capability is accepted by Swami Dayanand Saraswati while writing on aphorism 1.36 above).
3. Buoyancy - means becoming light. By having Cognitive Trance on lighter objects like cotton balls, etc., the yogi is able to achieve lightness. Achievement of lightness, in the physical body also, has been accepted in aphorism 3.42 with reference to the attainment of movement in the sky.
4. Approach - As per Seer Vyaasa, it is touching the moon with the tip of a finger. It means that far-off objects become approachable for the physical organs. In the present age, scientists have created such vehicles = rockets through which man had gone to the moon, walked there, and came back. In the same way, such a type of touch is possible at the mental level. But it does not mean that the yogi becomes able to extend his hand even up to 3 lac miles to touch the moon.
5. Unrestrained Will - means the accomplishment of will without restriction. This power is also in the possible categories on the basis of material science as explained above. In this regard, Seer Vyaasa had given the example of going into the earth and coming out from there, just as in water. With material science, after creating a way to enter into the earth with the instruments, yogi and even normal persons can enter into the earth and perform functions there.
6. Control - means having control of the gross elements and objects made therefrom, and not coming under the control of those. Yogi does not come under the control of these objects, by knowing the purpose of providing experience and salvation of these objects.
7. Creative Power - means becoming capable of appearance, disappearance, and aggregation of an object made from gross elements This attainment is also possible on the basis of material science. Some commentators have also referred to the control of the mind and inner self.
8. Fulfilment of desire - means the objective reality of determinations. It means that the nature of gross elements assumes the appearance as per the wish of the yogi. In this regard Seer Vyaasa had clearly said he cannot overpower the wish of Supreme Lord GOD, i.e., he cannot upset the nature and properties of gross elements.
Query:- On one side, on the basis of the lectures of Swami Dayanand, you have said that the power of attenuation, etc. manifests in the mind, on the other hand, you have proved the power of buoyancy, etc. in the physical body. Whether these should be accepted as manifesting in the mind or physical body?
Solution:- Swami Dayanand referred to only two attainments of attenuation and enlargement in his lecture at Pune and said that these are the properties of the mind only, the physical body has no such power. In this regard, the following facts are to be kept in mind —
1. On the basis of the internal testimony of Vyaasa commentary, the attainment of buoyancy is accepted. In aphorism 3.42 Seer Vyaasa and Seer Patanjali both have accepted this power in the physical body.
2. Swami Dayanand, in his commentary on Yajurveda 11.2, accepted the attainment of yoga on the basis of the practice of yoga and material science. In this way, attainments on the basis of yoga and material science are possible in the physical body also. This has already been explained above and will be clarified further in the commentary on this aphorism.
3. The lectures, which were delivered at Pune by Swami Dayanand, were noted by some other persons, named Mahadev Govind Ranade and Shriganesh Janardan Aagashe (using shorthand techniques), and were first published in Marathi and Gujarati. It is nowhere written that these notes were seen by Swami Dayanand for correction = confirmation before its publication as above. First of all, these were printed in Marathi and then in Gujarati. After 40 years of the first publication, somebody translated these notes into Hindi and got published. In this regard, we wish to mention that the power of Attenuation and Enlargement are possible at the level of mind only, as published. But Swami Dayanand had said nothing about the other 6 attainments. It may be possible he might have said some words in this regard to mean that others are possible in the physical body also. Further in this regard, the words "mind of the yogi" are printed in the bracket, which indicates that these words are added by the composer to clarify the meaning of these attainments. Even the last sentence of the paragraph is not clear and it appears that some words are left, and one can give the left words on the basis of one's knowledge, but it is not correct. (For more details, please refer to our commentary in Hindi).
Lectures composed by others cannot be accepted with authenticity, as against internal testimony of Vyaasa commentary and commentary on Vedas by Swami Dayanand. Hence the above explanation is as per the principles of yoga and Vedic scriptures.
Perfections of the body are explained in the next aphorism.
By mastery over the gross elements, the yogi does not have resistance to the characteristics of gross elements. For this, after the cognizance of properties of gross elements, conquest over five appearances is a must, which is not possible with material science. So, after cognizing the properties of gross elements in the trance, he has to apply the properties using material science, only then he achieves mastery over the gross elements. Seer Vyaasa described non-resistance as follows —
1. The earth does not obstruct the physical actions of the yogi, by its characteristics of form, etc. By this yogi is able to enter the rock. This is possible by creating a way in the rock by using material science.
2. The fluid water does not wet him. In aphorism 3.39, there is a description of non-contact water by mastery over the Udaana system of breath. In the same way, in the commentary to aphorism 3.42 Seer Vyaasa said - "laghutvaat cha jale paadaabhyaam viharati" i.e., walk on the water. So, this is possible.
3. Fire does not burn him. It is possible by creating fire-resistance cloths and other instruments by material science and using them. In the present age, on account of their religious beliefs, some people used to walk on burning coal and remain the least affected.
4. The moving air does not move him. In aphorism 3.31 there is the attainment of steadiness as that of a snake or alligator, by performing Sanyama over the tortoise nerve. Hence it is possible.
5. In the sky he becomes invisible and not seen by the others. The attainment of becoming invisible is described in aphorism 3.21. Hence it is possible.
Query:- In your explanation, you have equated a yogi with a materialistic scientist. Here the yogi will also have to work just like the scientist, to have attainments. Then what is the difference between a scientist and a yogi? On the other hand, the yogi should be able to do the above works with the yogic powers only. There are such types of examples for these in various Hindu scriptures.
Solution:- This misconception is on account of history given in various Puranas, which are said to be written by Seer Vyaasa. See, even during his lifetime, Lord Krishna had properly used material science. If it had not been so, then there was no need to learn the war techniques and science of arms. He would have been able to defeat his enemies simply by mind power. But history is against it. The use of weapons and material science by him, as described in Mahabharata, confirms this principle that for attainment, the use of material science is also important along with the performance of accessories of Yoga. In the present age, Swami Dayanand clearly stressed this principle in his commentary on hymn 11.2 of Yajurveda.
The level of a yogi remains much higher than that of a scientist since he cognizes the properties of the objects by performing Sanyama. On the other hand, material scientists just work on assumptions in order to know the properties of objects and make experiments for that. In this process, there are chances of success and failure. Further for such experiments, he needs time and money which may or may not result in fruitful results. So, the level of a yogi cannot be just equal to that of a material scientist.
