Ancient seer Meaning in English : (chatvaaraH khalu amii yoginaH) There are four classes of Yogi's — (praathamakalpikaH) the Praatham-kalpika, (madhu-bhuumikaH) the Madhu-bhuumika, (praj~naa-jyotiH) the Praj~najyoti, (cha) and (atikraanta-bhaavaniiyaH iti) the Atikraantabhavaniiya. (tatra) Out of the four (prathamaH) the first = Praathama-kalpika yogi is one who (abhyaasii) is practicing the accessories of yoga and (pravritta-maatra-jyotiH) in whom the light of knowledge obtainable from Sanyama has just started appearing. (dvitiiyaH) The second = Madhu-bhuumika yogi is one who (ritambhara-praj~naH) has attained cognitive faculty which cognizes truth only. (tritiiyaH) The third = Praj~naa-jyoti yogi is one who (bhuuta-indriyajayii) has obtained mastery over the gross elements and sense organs. The yogi (krita-rakShaa-bandhaH) strongly practices for the purpose of guarding the Soul, (sarveShu bhaaviteShu) for stability in all the objects which have been cognized; and (karttavya-saadhanaadimaan) practices the required means (bhaavaniiyeShu) for cognizable objects. (chaturthaH yaH tu) The fourth one is (atikraanta-bhaavaniiyaH) the Atikraanta-bhaavaniiya. (tasya) His (ekaH arthaH) sole object is (chitta-prati-sargaH) to make the mind latent in the Matter. (asya) This yogi has (sapta-vidhaa) sevenfold (praanta-bhuumi-praj~naa) supreme knowledge = trance-cognition in finality.
(tatra) Of these (anupashyantaH) on seeing the (sattva-vishuddhim) purity of mind (braahmaNasya) of the ascetic who (saakShaat-kurvataH) has cognized (madhumatiim bhuumim) the plane of Madhumati, (the second class of yogi), (sthaaninaH devaaH) the presiding deities of knowledge and material objects (upanimantrayante) invite him (sthaanaiH) from various places by saying — "(bhoH) Please (iha aasyataam) come and sit here; (iha ramyataam) enjoy here; (ayam kamaniiyaH bhogaH) this is a pretty enjoyment; (iyam kanyaa kamaniiyaa) here is a lovely girl; (idam rasaayanam) this is a medicated chemical which (bhaadhate) counteracts (jaraamrityum) old age and death; (idam yaanam) this is a vehicle which (vaihaayasam) moves through the sky; (amii kalpadrumaaH) this is the Kubera who fulfils the wishes; (puNyaa mandaakinii) this is pure stream of river Ganga = Mandakini which gives bodily health through its water; (siddhaaH maharShayaH) these are perfected ones, the great seers; (uttamaaH anukuulaaH apsarasaH) these are beautiful and obedient nymphs (= or the best performing sensation capacities); (divye shrotra-chakShuShii) here are clairaudience and clairvoyance; and (vajropamaH kaayaH) body of adamantine strength. You have (upaarjitam) earned (idam sarvam) all these (svaguNaiH) by virtue of your practice of yoga. (aayuShmataa) Please accept and experience these, also (pratipadyataam) accept the (akShayam) eternal, (ajaram) unfading and (amara-sthaanam) everlasting position which is (priyam) liked = loved by (idam devaanaam iti) these presiding deities of knowledge and material objects.
(evam) Thus being (abhidhiiyamaanaH) invited by the presiding deities as above, the yogi (bhaavayet) should contemplate (sa~NgadoShaan) upon the defects of attachment, in this way — "(katha~nchit) It is with great difficulty that (mayaa) I have (aasaaditaH) procured the (yoga-pradiipaH) light of yoga, (klesha-timira-vinaashii) which destroys the darkness of afflictions, (pachyamaanena) after having been burnt-up by (ghoreShu sa.nsaara-a~NgaareShu) frightening flames of the world and (vipari-varttamaanena) rolled again and again (janana-maraNa-andhakaare) in the darkness of life and death. (cha) And (ete) these (viShaya-vaayavaH) winds of sensuous enjoyments, (triShNaayonayaH) generating the sensuous desires / greed-ness, are (parti-pakShaaH) contrary to (tasya) the light of yoga. (sa khalu aham) And that I, (labdhaalokaH) having obtained the light of yoga, and (va~nchitaH) guiled by (anayaa) this (viShaya-mriga-triShNayaa) mirage of sensuous enjoyments, (katham) how should I (aatmaanam indhanii-kuryaam) make myself fuel (punaH) again (tasya eva pradiiptasya sa.nsaaraagneH) to that burning fire of life and death of the world." (iti) On having contemplated as above he should say to them that - "(viShayebhyaH) These sensuous enjoyments (svapno-pamebhyaH) which are like dreams and (kripaNa-jana-praarthaniiyebhyaH) desired by the weaklings, (svasti vaH) should remain yours and you enjoy these." (iti evam) Thus in this way yogi (nishchita-matiH) should come upon with fixed mind and (samaadhim bhaavayet) practice for the trance.
(sa~Ngam akritvaa) Having thus not allowed himself to become attached to the worldly enjoyments, he (na kuryaat) should not have (smayam) smile of satisfaction (= pride) (api) also, that (evam aham) in this way I (praarthaniiyah) have become the invitee (devaanaam api iti) of the presiding deities = gods also. Otherwise (smayaat) by the smile of satisfaction = pride as above (ayam) this yogi, (susthitam manyatayaa) having rested in fancied security, (na bhaavayiShyati) will not perceive (aatmaanam) himself (kesheShu grihiitam iva) as grasped by hairs (mrityunaa) by the death.
(tathaa) Similarly, (pramaadaH) carelessness (asya) of this yogi, (chhidraantara-prekShii) ever on the watch of other defects (cha) and (nityam yatnopacharyaH) removable by regular efforts, (labdhavivaraH) on finding that opportunity (kleshaan uttambhayiShyati) will bring the afflictions in operation. (tataH) Then the yogi (aniShTa-prasa~NgaH) will come into contact with undesirable (punaH) again. (i.e., will go in the vicious cycle of life and death.)
(evam) Thus (sa~Nga-smayaavakurvataH) on avoiding the attachment of sensuous enjoyments and mental pride thereof, (bhaavitaH arthaH) the practice of means of yoga (driDhiibhaviShyati) will become firm (cha) and (bhaavaniiyaH arthaH) the desired means for higher attainments (abhimukhii bhaviShyati iti) will be in front of (asya) this yogi.
Vedic Commentary in English : Seer Patanjali said when the yogi gets an invitation for the experience of material objects from the presiding deities and intellectuals or receives worldly objects for experience, then he should not have attachment for such experiences, nor become proud of any achievement otherwise he will come down to the lower levels and get involved in the afflictions again. There are four classes of yogis —
1. The Praatham-kalpika yogi - is one who is practicing the accessories of yoga and reached the level of Argumentative Cognitive Trance and in whom the light of knowledge obtainable from Sanyama has just started appearing.
2. The Madhu-bhuumika yogi - is one who can attain the Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trance and who has attained cognitive faculty (Yoga 1.48).
3. The PraGYajoyti yogi - is one who has obtained mastery over the gross elements (Yoga 3.44) and mastery over the sense-organs (Yoga 3.47)
4. The Atikraantabhavaniiya yogi - is one who has reached the stage of Ultra-cognitive Trance and has the sole object of making the mind latent in Matter. Such yogi has sevenfold supreme knowledge. (Ref Yoga 2.27).
Seer Vyaasa said that on seeing the purity of mind of this yogi of the second state i.e., having obtained the cognitive faculty, the presiding deities of knowledge and wealth and intellectuals invite him with respect and offer various types of objects of experience which may include worldly wealth, superior medicated chemicals for improving bodily strength and health, lovely girls, vehicles, etc. Yogi does get such types of offers and material enjoyment when he demonstrates his attainments. In order to safeguard oneself from such a situation, Vedic seers advised to live alone. (Ref - bahubhiryoge virodho raagaadibhiH kumaarii-sa.nkhavat. (Saankhya-Philosophy 4.9) i.e., by having contact with many people, aversion, and attachment take place, so, the person having discriminative knowledge should avoid contact with many people, and prefer to live alone only.
Such type of availability of worldly experiences is a type of test for a yogi, who gets involved in these material enjoyments, he falls from his state and remains involved in the life-cycle of this world; and who remains unattached to such experiences, he moves on the path of self-cognizance and cognizance of GOD and becomes able to achieve salvation. In the Katha-UpaniShada same type of offers were made to Nachiketa by Yamacharya, i.e., "have all types of wealth in the form of gold, vehicles, animals, big kingdom, children who live up to 100 years, servants, long life, etc. Whatever you feel is better than the knowledge of Soul, you may demand from me and I shall bless you with that. Whatever wishes are extremely difficult for anyone, queens, beautiful women with all the material enjoyments, etc. which cannot be availed by the kings even, you may demand and enjoy them throughout your life, get yourself served from them; but do not ask about the Soul." (Katha-UpaniShada 1.23-25). But Nachiketa had refused all these allurements.
So, in this regard, Seer Vyaasa had advised that on receipt of such invitations, the yogi should think in this way — "While being brunt-up by flames of this world, remaining involved in the darkness of life-death-life-cycle since eternity, I have procured the light of yoga in this life with great difficulty. Why should I destroy this light of yoga by getting involved in worldly enjoyment again? By experiencing these worldly enjoyments again why should I make myself fuel of this burning fire of life and death of this world." By thinking in this way, he should refuse material enjoyment, and should not have any type of attachment to them. In this way, being conformed to his ultimate goal should practice for trance to achieve the higher states. This type of advice is also given, by Seer Vyaasa, in aphorism 2.33.
Seer Vyaasa further said that on having saved himself from such greed = allurements, he should not have the smile of pride that I have become the invitee of the presiding deities and intellectuals, and should not have the pride of his desirelessness. In doing so, he will become careless, and as a result, the afflictions will come in the operative mode. If this happens, then it will be worse for him and he will come in contact with undesirable again and will remain involved in the continuous life-cycle of this world.
This non-attachment and non-pride are not advised only for the second category of the yogi but is for every yogi whose afflictions and residual potencies have not reached the state of burnt-up seeds. Before the burnt-up seed state, afflictions, whether they are dormant or attenuated state, can come into operative mode at any time, on having any strong base for them. So, the yogi has to remain in full alert mode. In this way, by remaining alert and avoiding attachment and mental pride, the yogi practices Desirelessness and regularly practices Trance, and with the result not only maintains his present level but also puts effort into attaining higher plains of yoga and remains involved to achieve his ultimate goal of salvation.
