Ancient seer Meaning in English : (graahyaH) The objects are (saamaanya-visheShaatmaa) the possessor of the generic and specific qualities of (shabdaadiH) sound etc. i.e., sound, touch, color, taste, and odour. And (vrittiH) functioning = modification (indriyaaNaam) of the sense organs (teShu) towards those objects (grahaNam) is the "Act" appearance. (cha) And (tat) that functioning (na) is not (saamaanya-maatra-grahaNaakaaram) merely taking in of the generic qualities of the objects; since (indriyeNa anaalochitaH) if the specific qualities were not taken in by the sense organs, then (katham) how (saH) that (viShayavisheShaH) particular object (anuvyavasiiyeta) will be perceived (manasaa iti) by the mind?
(punaH) And (indriyam) a sense organ is (dravyam) a substance, which is (samuuhaH) a group of elements, (ayuta-siddha-avayava-bheda-anugataH) which cannot be separated and also not meant to be distinguished from one another, and which are (saamaanya-visheShayoH) general and specific qualities (buddhi-sattvasya) of the mind (prakaashaatmanaH) whose nature is Illumination; and this is (svaruupam) the "Nature" appearance of the sense organ.
(teShaam) Their (tritiiyam ruupam) third appearance is (asmitaa) the principle of individuality (lakShaNaH) characterized by (aha.NkaaraH) Egoism. (indriyaaNi) The sense organs are (visheShaaH) specialized results of (tasya) that (saamaanyasya) generic form of egoism.
(chaturtham ruupam) The fourth appearance is (guNaaH) the "Qualities" (prakaasha-kriyaa-sthiti-shiilaa) which are of the nature of Illumination, Activity, and Inertia, and (vyavasaayaatmakaaH) determines the natural phenomena or helps in definite activities of the living beings, and (yeShaam) whose (pariNaamaH) manifestation is (indriyaaNi) sense organs (saaha.nkaaraaNi) together with the elements of Egoism.
(pa~nchamam ruupam) The fifth appearance is the (puruShaartha-vattvam) fulfillment of the purpose of the Soul i.e., providing experience and salvation to the Souls (yat) which (anugatam) is inherent (guNeShu iti) in Qualities.
(sa.nyamaH) By performing Sanyama, (yathaa-kramam) respectively, (eteShu pa~nchasu) in these five (indriya-ruupeShu) appearances of the sense organs and (tatra tatra jayam kritvaa) thereby conquest over that-that appearance is obtained. (pa~ncha-ruupa-jayaat) By obtaining mastery over the five appearances, (indriyajayaH) power of mastering sensation is (praadurbhavati) manifested (yoginaH) in the Yogi.
Vedic Commentary in English : Seer Patanjali had advised the Sanyama over five appearances of sense organs for mastery over them, as follows —
1. Act appearance of sense organs:- The 'Act appearance' of the sense organs is said as the modification of sense organs towards the properties of sound etc. of the gross elements. The functioning of sense organs does not merely grasp the generic qualities of the properties of sound etc., but these grasp the generic as well as specific qualities of these properties. If only the general qualities of the characteristic of gross objects in the form of sound etc. are cognized, then that object would not have been perceived by the mind, even though these come into contact with the mind. Since in order to get the object = subject cognized by the mind, grasping both the generic and specific qualities is a must. So, in this regard, both the generic and specific qualities of objects are grasped by the sense organs.
2. Nature appearance of sense organs:- Sense organs are the product of the illuminating form of Egoism (substance), which is the product of the illuminating form of Pure Be-ness (substance). So, the sense organ is a substance made from generic and specific qualities of illuminating mind, which cannot be separated and not meant to be distinguished separately. This is the second "Nature" appearance of sense organs.
3. Egoism appearance of sense organs: The material cause of sense organs is an illuminating form of Egoism, which has the property of the principle of Individuality. Sense organs are the specialized result of the generic form of Egoism.
4. Conjunction appearance of sense organs:- Sense organs are also the last products, just like the gross elements. Sense organs are the products of Egoism (substance), Egoism is the product of Pure Be-ness (substance - known as 'mahattatva' in Sanskrit), and this again is the product of Matter = Qualities of Illumination, etc. In this way, these three Qualities remain manifested in all the products on account of the work-cause rule. So, these Qualities are the 'Conjunction' appearance of sense organs.
5. Purposefulness appearance of sense organs: The purpose of the sense organs is the same as that of their root cause Matter, i.e., providing experience and salvation to the Soul. This purpose remains present in all the products of Matter. Sense organs also serve the purpose of providing experience and salvation to the Soul. This is the fifth - 'Purposefulness appearance' of sense organs.
Yogi has to perform Sanyama over the five appearances of each sense organ in sequence and cognize them, and also have conquest over them one by one. After the conquest of the five appearances of a sense organ, mastery over that sense organ is obtained. In this way, he has to achieve mastery over all the five sense organs.
