Ancient seer Meaning in English : (manojavitvam) This attainment of "Quickness as of mind" means (anuttamaH) excellent (gati-laabhaH) movement of (kaayasya) sense-organs situated in the body parts.
(vikaraNabhaavaH) Un-instrumental perception means (vritti-laabhaH) action of (indriyaaNaam) sense organs (abhipreta-desha-kaala-viShayaapekShaH) in the desired place, time, and object (videhaanaam) without the necessity of organ parts in the body.
(pradhaanajayaH) Mastery over the Matter means (sarva-prakriti-vikaara-vashitvam iti) power of control over all the modifications of Matter.
(etaaH) These (tisraH siddhayaH) three attainments (uchyante) are called (madhupratiikaa) by the name of "Madhu-pratiikaa" = Like the Honey. (cha) And (etaaH) these attainments (adhigamyante) obtained (karaNa-pa~ncha-ruupa-jayaat) by the conquest over the five appearances of sensation.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism attainments by mastery over the sense organs are explained —
1. Quickness of Mind — Having the excellent movement of sense organs in the body parts is the quickness of the mind. The various commentators have prescribed the "quickness of body" from the phrase "kaayasya-anuttamo gatilaabhaH" used by Seer Vyaasa in his commentary. It has to be considered that "mastery over the sense-organs" can have a relation with the excellence in the working of sense organs, not with the excellence of the physical body. In fact, the mind is the means for acquiring knowledge, i.e., it gets connected with the sense-organs and in turn, sense-organs get connected with the external objects and grasp those objects. This knowledge moves back to the mind through the sense-organs only. The next attainment of "Uninstrumental perception" is acquiring knowledge through the sense-organs without being concerned with the physical body. So, in this attainment, the involvement of the physical organs for the senses is of primary importance, therefore Seer Vyaasa had used the phrase "kaayasya-anuttamo gatilaabhaH" and this is meant for excellence in the working of senses existing in the physical parts of the body; and this meaning is as per conception of Seer Vyaasa only.
For this attainment, most commentators have used the words "just like mind" for the movement. Seer Vyaasa had not used these words, but it was first of all used by Bhoja, and the same was followed by the others.
In fact, the mind is accepted as the fastest mover, but this power of the mind has nowhere been accepted for the sense organs, nor Seer Vyaasa had accepted the same in his commentary. So, in this attainment, on account of mastery over sense-organs, the performance of sense-organs becomes more excellent as compared to earlier, i.e., the sense-organs, of a yogi, grasp the external objects more efficiently as compared to a common person.
2. Un-instrumental Perception — Un-instrumental perception means the yogi is able to make the movement of sense-organs in the desired place, time, and object, at his will, without the necessity of physical organ parts of the body. In order to grasp any external object, contact of the sense-organ with the object is required, which take place by mean of physical parts of sense-organs in the body. But yogi is not only able to have external cognition but also have internal cognition; and this internal cognition is superior to external cognition (Ref - commentary on shrutaanumaana-praGYaabhyaam-anyaviShayaa visheShaarthatvaat Yoga 1.49). In this internal cognition, the yogi does not require the physical parts of sense organs to have contact with the desired object. Yogi is able to cognize the object without the external contact of sense-organs with the respective object, and this is known as Uninstrumental perception. In this regard, Swami Dayanand said the following in the Hugli debate —
"So, the yogi cognizes all objects by yoga which are in the heart, up till atom. He does not keep any connection with the external objects in concentration even. But concentration is related to the Soul, not with others", and "By this, the mind becomes pure and shining with knowledge. As the space = sky is subtle and omnipresent, so, is the mind of Yogi. So, with the continuous stay of mind in the heart which is vast, the modifications of the mind are as of the pure light of the sun, moon, planet, and jewels, i.e., the modifications become pure as above, and in the same way, the mind of the Yogi becomes pure in the state of trance".
So, the cognizance of the sun, moon, etc. in the trance, without the eye-balls of the physical body, is an example of Un-instrumental perception.
3. Mastery over the Matter — The third attainment on account of mastery over the sense-organs is mastery over the Matter. It means that the yogi has the power of control over all the modifications of Matter. By knowing the foremost material cause of sense-organs, which are "Qualities of Illumination, etc." and their purpose of providing experience and salvation to the Souls, yogi become able to fulfill his object of experience during the lifetime and ultimate prime object of salvation for himself. This purpose of Matter remains present in all its products up till sense-organs and gross elements. By knowing this purpose, a yogi is able to have control over all the products of the Matter i.e., he becomes able to accomplish his purpose of experience and salvation; and does not come under the control of material objects.
It should also be known that this control does not mean that he can do anything as per his will. Yogi cannot counter the rules of creation or rules of GOD, as already explained with reference to the attainment of "fulfillment of desire" in aphorism 3.45 above.
